Ok to be fat and in a Maillot Jaune?

Hey there peeps,

I thought this is a question for you lot on here.

Unfortunately, my father passed away unexpectedly late last year, and as a result i've spent the past 4/5 months either sitting at a desk or in my car driving the 150 miles in between desks!

Result: Putting on approx. 13kg

So, as things finally settle down I'm going to treat myself to a new cycling top (mainly because my old ones don't fit!), but is it wrong to be wearing a yellow top on my bike, with an obviously non-tour-like belly??

Or shall i stick to the white one to be safe?

Hmmm, never thought about a piece of clothing this much before!!

The usual suspects will be along in a minute to say that you shouldn't wear it at any time as you haven't earned it.

I think you want it really, so get it. Sounds like you've earnt it for yourself in the past year anyway.

Grief hits people in different ways. Dude, wear what you like and enjoy it.

Wear what you like. Some will laugh at the chubby man in the yellow jersey, others won't care!

B*ll*cks to what other folk think, wear what you want. You'll be no different to 90% of the people I've seen wearing yellow jerseys, anyway.
You've no won the Big Cup since 1902!

I'm surprised the cycling nazis haven't been along yet with their "Unwritten Rules" rulebook to forbid this purchase yet

correct ... wear what ever you like, if other people have a problem with what you want to wear then the problem is with them NOT you

People will laugh at people in lycra full stop.

Being fat just adds extra laughs.

Colour won't even come into it although the fashion police may get you for a Z or Mapei team jersey
None of the above should be taken seriously, and certainly not personally.

  • It is wrong to BUY the rainbow jersey or a Maillot Jaune

It cheapens both you and the jersey.

It is also wrong to buy an England (or whatever nationality) football shirt

    Really now

If you care so strongly go to the pub next time there's an england football match, stand on the bar, and decree loudly that this is the case.

Having said that I personally wouldn't wear a malliot jaune. But have no problem wearing my Bracknell Bees ice hockey top, or my Red Wings one, despite only having played for the Bracknell U16 side many years ago...

By the sounds of it the OP has had a fairly tough time of it lately. He should wear what what he likes!!

Will to the forum. Will to the forum.

Wear what you like.....I wouldn't wear team jerseys, world champs jerseys etc personally (mainly because of the cost!) I wouldn't be overly concerned if I saw someone out wearing one either though

I will admit to ribbing mates who have turned up to rides in team kit though! :P

Personally I wouldn't wear a 'Prize' jersey. I like the fact that in cycling there are certain jerseys that you are awarded for your achievements.

I know the argument then goes that you shouldn't wear team kit but in my opinion riders are paid to ride for the team and the jersey doesn't have the same significance as one they are awarded.

However, that is my view on what I would be happy wearing. If you like it and don't feel a fool in it (and I'm not saying you would be, it is just I personally would feel uncomfortable in a Tour leaders jersey as I was getting passed by a girl on a trike), then you should wear it. Like others have said, at the end of the day it is 'my' problem.

    Enjoy your riding.

    P.s. I am not a Nazi

I probably will look stupid, however my current belly and lycra won't look too clever anyway!

TBH, I'm surprised at the lack of scathing comments!

It's more a cycling top that I like (it just seems to look best in this colour) and I thought, sod it.
Ironically, it seems easier now to buy it than before when I looked less stupid in it. Maybe the irony?

Either way, a fat man in a yellow jersey still looks better than my skinny mate in his KOM jersey! (IMO)

Ahhh, the suns out, cycling banter... it's summer! :D

    Robthehu......

I am getting the impression this isn't even a replica yellow jersey, it is simply a jersey that is yellow?!

Anyone even commenting on that would deserve to be ribbed for bringing it up.

    Happy riding.

Cheapen the Maillot Jaune? That jersey won by many people using PED's you mean? Is that what you hold in high esteem?

Unless I'm mistaken the OP wasn't saying he was going to wear a Yellow Jersey , but just a jersey that is yellow.

In which case, why would it be a problem to even the jersey police? One note of caution though - dark colours are better when you're carrying a little extra padding.

My quote probably started the 'you haven't earnt it' posts. Having said that the title reads "Ok to be fat and in a Maillot Jaune?" which to me means as in the TdF. So basically, it's RtHM's fault for trying to be a flash b'stard and not writing 'yellow shirt'!!!!!!!

    Nice top!

Wear what you like, when you like. Yellow has the added advantage of better visability to drivers etc.

I'm a yellow jersey wearer and 'built for comfort' rather than speed in the weight dept. Doesn't bother me what others think at all, life's too short too worry about others thoughts, let them worry about their own gear I say! I bought it because it was very cheap from TK max and shows up well on the road... Both really good points for me.

Glad you have gone for it... Enjoy wearing it on your rides, it looks great!

By the way mine is the full on Tour de France yellow shirt like this http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?VISuperSize&item=180638398934
  • cool top indeed!

I think people should wear what they like, all they are saying by wearing say a team jersey is that they are a fan of the team. Just like I as a fan of Man U sometimes wear a Man U shirt
