It's dusty as fuck up there isn't it, bloody weather, still it's a lot of fun.

I do wish people would either MTFU at the Weirwolf or at the least get out of the fucking run out at the bottom instead of standing in the trail waiting to see if you make it. Ok if you don't want to ride it then that's fine but move the fuck out of the way. It's tight enough as it is going into it so it doesn't help if you have to fucking stop right before it for someone to move out of the way. FFS if you don't fucking move I'm going to hit you. Stupid fuckwits. If you really want to watch someone ride down it then move off the trail out of the way. When I ask/tell you to fucking move, move, don't just stay in the same fucking place or shuffle a bit further down the trail, has it not occured to you that once I've ridden down it I'm going to want to carry on riding along the trail??? I don't want to wait around for fucking ages at the top waiting for you fucking fuckwits to get your acts together, you'd think they'd have some fucking common sense.

    Meh, cnuts

    Rant over
  • I went on Good Friday with a small group, first time since the winter freeze, I can't believe how badly cut up it has got.
Do people ride the trail with their back wheels locked or something?
They Monkey is better, but Upper and Lower Cliff are suffering the same fate, I suspect quite a few people just ride up the fireroad and do the final two sections.
I ride a HT but I'm thinking of getting a short travel FS for coming to the likes of Cannock, you used to be able to pick clean lines, like staying high on the berms, but now it seems everything is cut up.

So, why do they call you Angry Bird?
  • Its has definitely cut up alot from when the new bit opened last year, not surprising really. Its not much of a bad thing really, gives you more to think about. Certainly wouldn't be as easy to ride on my short travel HT compared to the Giant FS!

Its very easy to take full sus for granted sometimes and get a bit lazy.

Overall though, good, dry, quick conditions at he mo.

I rode the FTD trail this morning - lovely day apart from the rain showers! The recent rail has helped to dampen down some of the trails a tad. Under the trees it's quite damp but I wouldn't describe it as muddy! Some of the 2nd section with the boards, bridge, and flat rocks is very slippery.

The clear-felled sections are still dry and dusty, just with the occasional puddle!

Section 11 near Marquis Drive is closed for trail maintenance - I got a bit lost as I couldn't find any signs for the diversion after the first sign. I also saw a 'Closed for maintenance' sign right at the start of the trail just before the 1st singletrack section. I'm not sure what this referred to as there didn't actually seem to be a closure anywhere near there.

All in all a lovely ride though!

Sublime conditions last night it seems the passage of a few thousand tyres has taken the edge off the potholes/craters and the official trails are quite flowy in places. Off piste conditions are fabulous.

Great to be able to do a full circuit after work in daylight and it was light enough on the way back to do some exploring on the North side.

If anyone has been up to Cannock today could you post on the conditions please? Lot's of heavy, persistant rain around today and whilst i don't mind the mud i can go to Sherwood Pines and get muddy (30 mins away) rather than travelling 1hr 40mins there and back to get muddy :D

    Cheers

Well - we decided to give it a go anyway and got back an hour ago. We gave the Monkey a go for the first time and as a self confessed noob i did find it challenging in places although very enjoyable.

Will concur with Penylope above about the conditions although not as muddy as expected - just very big puddles every couple of yards and lots of slippery stones!.

Looking forward to goiing back in the next few weeks.

Fine conditions last night, loose'n'dusty enough to have some fun but not loose enough to have you on your ear in the corners. Having said that it is still in fairly grim in places what it needs is a few days of steady rain, several thousand volunteers to ride it and then a low humidity dry spell to restore it to its former glory.

The first section from Swinnos to the Steggy is completely closed the diversion is along the green route lol so take it easy we don't want to skittle any pedestrians do we?

    Section 11 still closed :(

Looking ahead, 80s-throwback pop synth combo Erasure are playing 24/6 and 25/6 and the BV car park will be closed. More details here: http://www.chasetrails.co.uk/index.php . Friday and Saturday nights are probably not the most popular times to go for a bike ride but last year riding round to the strains of 'Money's too tight to mention' was quite an experience, similar to root canal surgery

Rode the new start on saturday last week. Nice ride in, still needs bedding down as quite loose in places at the moment. Makes a nice change to the start.

Fantastic conditions yesterday. Lower cliff is getting a bit of a mess though since the last time i went. I've got to say that riding the chase midweek is a much more enjoyable experience than the weekend. Last time I went on a weekend I ended up queuing to descend Upper and Lower cliff.

Agreed - this time last year the challenge was to see how fast you could go, now the challenge is picking the best line through the braking craters and wondering if the apex of the next blind corner has disappeared down the hillside.

Have never actually queued to descend but then again I'm pretty slow and most people have gone by the time I get there :)

Fri/Sat/Sun/Mon nights ultra quiet as in 'where is everybody?' and well worth a visit.

Best to go up in the evenings or early morning. I agree about lower cliff, can't go nearly as fast as i could around Easter time, I'd been down at uni for 10 weeks, come back and it's completely different, gotten noticeably worse, not that it detracts from the fun :P

With that in mind any idea what time the car park closes at the birches valley centre at weekends?

    9pm

I was there around midday today.
The car park was rammed but the trails were quiet.

Strangely quiet on saturday. The trails were dry, just one patch of mud on the first descent section after the switchback climbs after you cross the road on the Monkey.

Lots of braking bumps, and a few of the berms just kind of ended mid corner, which would have been interesting if I'd been going quicker.

Took a trip to Cannock today for the 1st time despite it probably being the closest trail centre to me and it was an enjoyable day, a bit rough in places as the trails are breaking up and getting eroded which was a shame but nice and dry and dusty in places.

Looked quite busy in the car park but very quiet out on the Monkey trail but a few people around on the return of FTD, with one detour up a fire road.

Will definitely go back but get the feeling weekends are probably very busy?
