Did the dog this morning, we were going to attempt the monkey too, but it was like this for the majority of the run. Some bits were a bit drier, some were a lot wetter, It seemed to get worse the farther round you got. You had to pedal to get over the rollers...
Weird thing is, you dont get dirty, the mud doesn't actually leave the ground, just sucks you in and slides you all over the place.
Will be leaving it until it is properly dried out before trying it again.

Dog and monkey were both great on saturday morning but there had been some hard frosts for a few days before hand so i think the ground was part frozen. The trails were riding very well though ,very rough in places but still good. The only really muddy section was across the top of the dog up alongside marquis drive, even the new section down from the tackeroo including the rollers which were in a terrible state a couple of weeks ago were fine.0

I rode FTD & then the Monkey Trail twice on Monday. I found the FTD to be in a much worse condition than the Monkey. Which must be down to some parts of the FTD being exposed to the elements. When I go again ill leave riding the latter sections of FTD. Riding them in there current state will only make them worse. The monkey was surprisingly a lot drier than i thought it was going to be with decent conditions overall. But with today's rain I'd leave it a couple of days for it to dry out.Moorlands Rider0

Good effort with the updates guys.
I'll give Cannock a rest until conditions improve some.0 -
Went round last night not much to report apart from the usual Winter meh. Didn't do much of the Dog but Tacks Blast was wet and muddy and S11 is still in a bad way. Shame really because on a Summer's evening it is pretty good along there riding towards the setting sun.
Getting eversoslightly weary of thermals and lights now.0 -
Mostly dry this morning. Didn't do any of the Dog went straight to the Monkey which is in great shape. There are a few damp sections and little puddles but most importantly, the good bits are good. Lower Cliff is spectacular, well worth a spin back up the fireroad for another run or three.0

good to hear cannock's recovering, i'm riding it for the first time tail end of the week coming up.0

thinking of heading over tomorrow, possibly to do the monkey as well as the dog, how are the conditions?Specialized FSR XC Expert 20100

Very good on Sunday. There were a few damp patches and puddles but the Monkey was just awesome esp Upper & Lower Cliff descents and even the swamp on the Dog S11 had (almost) dried out. Tacks Blast not too bad there were a few soft rutted sections but the rollers were better than they've been for weeks - smoothed out by 1000's of tyre tracks nice work everyone
It is raining now but it should clear away by midday and hopefully after a dry night conditions will be OK in the morning.
Edit: ah sorry Moss I just read your post again and realised you are going today. Unlucky
Have a good one anyway tell us all about it0 -
I rode the Monkey Sunday and found it to be quite treacherous tbh. Maybe it's a tyre difference but honestly it was quite scary at times.0

Went on saturday-did ftd and the lower cliff, found it fine-not a lot of mud, a few puddles but no bog, lower cliff a bit potholey but dry.0
-
Just got back from doing both trails - it had rained this morning so there were puddles everywhere, and it was all a bit of a boggy mess. The rollers were a mess at the end of the tackeroo too, still good fun though. I had pretty good tyres on and they were struggling for grip in some sections though.
The ride was clean before today

It doesn't look too bad0

hopefully it continues to dry, going up next weekend. can't bloody wait been ages!Giant Trance X4 20100

With 3 days of heavy rain forecast, I don't think there's much chance of that0
-
The usual mixed bag today but quite a bit of the dog is on the brink of turning into a mud-fest and if it rains over the weekend it will be awful. Monkey still holding up quite well it'll never be like it was but I think we are getting used to it now0

went to cannock last week for the first time as part of a week of riding, there were a couple of wet / muddy / hardgoing sections but i think this is to be expected everywhere at this time of year.
the thing that really surprised me is the absolutely shocking breaking bumps into everything, after every drop, etc etc. seems that when the ground was sodden it didn't fare too well with the amount of traffic it gets.
incidentally when we went all rock and stone surfaces were dry and there hadn't been any rain for two days.0 -
Rode the monkey yesterday and it was great. Changed from a Tioga to a Kenda Nevegal on the rear which was a poor choice, I think they are made from Teflon! Think I'll go for another Maxxis Advantage.
Anyway, apart from the tragic wheelspin on the uphills it rode nicely. Rode the cliff descents in twilight without lights which made things more interesting. I reckon I went down faster than ever, didn't slow down for stuff I was scared of because I couldn't see it I'd recommend it to anyone, a ripping good laugh
Went down the new unmarked yet heavily used trail from the top of the hill down to the start of the upper cliff ascent. Was pretty dark going through there too but it is a good little trail, more technical than anything else on the route and very steep at some points. Couldn't get back enough due to seat height, rear guard was preventing it from going lower, fixed now and ready for next time.
I also noticed the time before that that there is another trail going off to the left at the top of the second hill there, or maybe it's the third I don't remember. Anyone know where it goes and what it's like?0 -
Awesome I should be heading up tomorrow depending on workload.Specialized FSR XC Expert 20100

Was out yesterday and today and the difference between the 2 days is amazing. Yesterday was still a bit boggy in places, but today, things are looking much better. You could just about take the rollers at speed today which hasn't been an option for a long time,
Possibly the crazy, and I mean CRAZY wind has helped dry the top layer off. Luckily the real heavy rain that was forecast never arrived. It was good to see a lot of riders back out today, on and off the trails.Craig Rogers0 -
Was up there yesterday and whilst most of the winter we've not really used either trail, choosing to venture all over the Chase as a better option, we did them both yesterday. Some of the bits are showing signs of recovering but other parts are gonna need some serious work dong to them.
The Berms on the Tackeroo run are beyond belief, braking bumps more than half way round.  Let go of your brake lever peeps FFS!!!x-isle wrote:It was good to see a lot of riders back out today, on and off the trails.
Quite the contrary when we went out mate. Started at 2ish and saw hardly anyone up there. Although Sunday morning the Birches Valley car park looked rammed both times i passed by.4 wheels bad

I've always found that Sunday afternoons get a bit quiet, even in the summer.Craig Rogers0
