Hi all,

Probably had this question before, but I'm looking for some Oakleys, and am wondering if anyone has any Oakleys that have been good for cycling use?

I'm looking at Oakley Radar's at the moment, but having never had any Oakley's before, just making sure I'm looking at a decent style for the correct use.

Many thanks.

I have a pair of Jawbones - plain back with black and yellow lenses, this isn't a fashion show! :)

They're out of this world in terms of performance - I would recommend in a hearbeat.

Shouldn't you be askin' on a huntin' shooting' and golf forum - Oakley's target demographic, particularly called Billy-Bob, married to his cousin Loretta-Sue, age 42 with a girth to match
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..
  • You won't go wrong with either Radar or Jawbone. Both are excellent cycling glasses.

Ah yes, as Oakley's are practically unheard of in the cycling world...!

Best to try on a few pairs - find some that suit your noggin.

Would definitely recommend them as a brand, but price makes a little research worthwhile to get the right fit.

I have Jawbones. Was not keen on spending that much money on sunnies but well worth it.
Yellow lenses in at the moment as weather is poo and they brighten up everything. :D

I have broken my nose twice and, to be fair, it could be straighter! If Jawbones are comfy on me, then they'll probably be comfy on anyone else. :)

How are the yellow lenses at night? I've been using 6 quid PBK sunnies for the last year (only used 2 of the 6 sets of lenses) - fancy some Jawbones but wondered about yellow lenses at night (I guess clear are available but at even more cost?)
ROAD < Scott Foil HMX Di2, Volagi Liscio Di2, Jamis Renegade Elite Di2, Cube Reaction Race > ROUGH
  • i have used them in the dark when i got caught out when it first started getting dark last year they were good nothing special i dint havae to take them off but worth buying. my only problem but the same with all sunglasses i know i have to take them off when doing long climbs. Think every one is in the same boat ???
  • If you go for Oakley I'd recommend Radars or M Frames ahead of Jawbones for cycling, especially if you ride in a group or race. The large frame on the outside on the Jawbones is not good for peripheral visibility and you notice things slightly later as a result (passing cars, other riders).

Jawbones also fog slightly more easily than Radars or M Frames. This is only a problem when you stop but because they're more closed (on my face at least but I think this applies to the general shape), the fog takes a moment longer to clear.

Personal preference but I don't find the venting useful at all. They don't fog less easily that I've noticed and the extra breeze if you're going fast isn't helpful.

The yellow lenses are fine at night.

I've ridden with Radars, M Frames and Jawbones several 000km each.
  • I use Flak Jacket with photochromic lenses, but have a pair of clear lenses for early morning and late evening, although the photochromic go down to 9% so I do not change them very often

You mentioned removing glasses for hill climbs? Because of steaming up lenses?

The vented Jawbone lenses are a big improvement in that regard and the only time mine steam up is if I have my buff pulled over my mouth AND nose - the hot air goes straight up to the lenses in that case.

    Wow, 25 duplicates!

Sorry to post-steal, but I'm considering Radars as I have quite a small head/face. What lens shape do people recommend? Path/Pitch/etc.

This is not a duplicate post

Save your money and buy some Bolle Contour, in all lense types.

    Just as good.

Not necessarily cold, but probably not as warm as Tenerifé. :)

If you do buy Oakley have look at the Oakley seconds site. Based in Portsmouth.
Got a nice pair of Jawbones for £90 and still can't see how they were seconds. Look perfect.

Best to try the different styles on depends on shape of face what is most comfortable

i use a pair of clear bolle contour when mountain biking in the winter and find them decent and great value for money - however they are nowhere near as good as my jawbones in terms of fit/comfort and quality of lens.

Thanking you all for your input.

Just to check, can you, for instance, put Radar path lenses into a Radar Range frame or visa versa etc.?

Cant understand for the life of me why people would buy "second's"

If you cant afford to buy off the shelf either save up until you can or failing that get a different make (cheaper) that fit your budget.....

    Really?

It really depends what has made them seconds. I've never bought Oakley 2nds before, but I did once pick up a £500 overcoat for £100 because of a (very small and not visible when being worn) mark on the lining...

In that instance I couldn't work out for the life of me why anybody would pay the full price.

I have a pair of Oakley Factory seconds for work.

The factory seconds have a very slight cosmetic defect (couldn't find anything wrong with the pair I received)
and I figured that it was worth saving £63 because they would almost certainly get "cosmetically defected" by my good self at some point.
