The great North/South divide

So then, where does the North start etc?
On the 'magnetic north' thread, someone suggested Stoke......well I'm from Stoke and reckon it is somewhere around here......although we are usually refered to as being in 'the Midlands'...
I went to Ludlow recently, and that is definitely 'the South'-not as friendly, poorer driving standards, cans of coke cost a quid etc
So, discuss

The North starts at Watford Gap. End of discussion.0

I say when asked (which happens aaaallllll the time), that t'north starts north of Stone. So, to me, Stoke is the first major town (or five towns) in the North.
They talk funny there too.... The accent is different than here in Stafford.
Not sure where it starts in the East Midlands but I think Nottingham is in the north and Derby the South.0 -
To me the north (of England) is anything north of a line from the Humber to the Dee.0

Up here in Scotland we laugh at such petty distinctions, the most northerly dividing line mentioned so far is about 4 hours drive south of here.0

Anything above Truro's "up north" for me.
S'pose it's all relative man, as Einstein might have saidI may be a minority of one but that doesn't prevent me from being right.

Surely the question is irrelevant. It's outside of London, who cares.

Gloucester city play football in the blue square bet NORTH division. :shock:Tail end Charlie
The above post may contain traces of sarcasm or/and bullsh*t.0 -
Georaphically the divide is supposed to be around Leeds.
Ask someone from Orkney though. We are all just from the big island in the south :twisted:None of the above should be taken seriously, and certainly not personally.0 -

I agree with all of that.......no one wants brummies  and northerners definitely put gravy on chips.....why dont southerners? Wasn't there also talk of a pie sandwich on here recently? made me smile!
Turns out Stoke is definitely in the North....we all talk proper weird for a start-one of the key traits of someone from the norf.0 -
i thought the vikings raped and pillaged there way down as far as newcastle on one side and chester on the other?
apparently if you do a DNA test you can tell whether you are northern ( viking )
or not ( southern probably french )0 -

Geographically, a place near Coventry was deemed the centre of England - think there is a monument there? however after further surveys calculated by using centroids in the beginning of 2000 (extreme offshore islands included) a small farm near Leicester now sits smack in the middle of England.0
