MW2 on PC was a pile with it's player-based host system. Very much glad to see their back to server-based like Battlefield 2, CoD4:MW etc. FPS' like CoD, DoD, TF2 and L4D series is where Steam comes into it's own where as it wrecks the Football Manager experience IMO.
  • What's everyone's opinion of Black Ops?

I have two teenage sons [13 & 18] who are huge fans of the COD series, and are massively disappointed by Black Ops. Their view is that Treyarch have taken a backwards step in terms of look & feel - more like COD: World at War, and that the grapics are well short of the benchmark set by Infinity Ward in MW2. (Being an old git of 48 this is my considered interpretation of various teenage grunts :D )

They were expecting a modern evolution of the MW2 storyline, and are put off by the cold war setting & weapons.

I haven't had a chance to play yet (no surprise there) but the fact that neither of my game-headed offspring were interested in playing either campaign or online after less than an hour speaks volumes. I must admit at first viewing I have to agree with them, but will reserve final judgement until I've had a chance to bash the buttons for a bit.

Just wondered what everyone else thinks.

Personally, I thought that the story line was good and the game play is great. I liked the whole tie in with the Bay of Pigs events and it's historically, pretty accurate. I can understand why teenagers don't like the setting and weapons etc. But watching my mate finish the campaign, sitting wide eyed whilst watching the theatrical segments, I can safely say it was well recieved.

Graphics wise, I prefer the Infinity Ward style, but I don't think that Treyarc's worse, just different.

I've not had a great deal of time on line yet, but in the time I've spent on there, I've had no lag or server issues. I suspect any lag issues have been down to the sheer number of people on line on the release day. Well, I hope that they are, connectivity on MW2 was fine, but connectivity on Treyarc's World at War was appauling. Hopefully they've pulled their fingers out and sorted this !

The news reports of people queuing over night did amuse me. There were reports of hundreds of people queuing at midnight, in the cold and the rain, just to be the first to get the game. I just ordered it from Amazon and got it a day early, so when they were standing in the freezing rain, I was inside, in the warm, playing the game :D:D:D

  • I ended up with 2 copies as Mrs bought it for me at Sainsbury's on the offer at £27. Needless to say I took the one I bought at Tesco back, having paid £40. Kindly, Mrs went upstairs with our 8 week old daughter at 9pm last night to give me a few hours play time!
LOVE IT! was disappointed with CoD:WaW but this it great, more difficult than MW2 and the storyline is very good.
Had a few games online, amazed how many people are already quite far up the rankings, obviously not got jobs and 2 kids!!! Will be back on again tonight, PS3 tag in OB1Kanobi if anyone wants to add me.

PS I'm 38 too so does that include me in the sad bracket? Think I'm just making up for lack of a decent console/computer in my teens! Oh well, I'm not down the boozer everynight, and will still be cycling during the winter so feel I can justify a few hours gameplay here and there!!!

  • My copy has been despatched today so hopefully I'll have it tomorrow. Luckily, I should have a couple of nights to myself too.
How is the feel (movement etc) compared to MW2? I liked the overall feel of MW2 with the sensitivity turned up high so I'm hoping it's pretty much the same.

It's pretty sharp and much more fluid than MW2.

Can only speak about the Wii. Infinity Ward is absolutely streets ahead. Black Ops feels like a step backwards, the whole game feels tatty.

+1 for that. Graphics definitely not as good and I prefer IW's menus & HUD

Sadly we live in a time where people put graphics over gameplay, developers make this their priority, then we moan about lack of substance....

I still play BF2, as well as BC2 & B-ops, the gameplay on that is still better that all its successors.

I think gameplay on Black Ops is from what I have seen better than MW2, they have got the server issue sorted and its genrally just a better playing experience.

love it level 30 at the mo, graphics are a bit dissapointing but i like the slower movement and the weapons are pretty good, maps a re generally big and lots of battle zones, i cant get my kilstreaks sorted tho as the kills dont count towards killstreak rewards, did an hour on the campaign and it looks pretty good the story is unfolding quite nicely

if anyone is gonna buy it tesco has it for 25 if you buy 20playstation network voucher so 45 all in and the voucher will be used to buy the maps packs when they come out
    i need more bikes

I was playing this afternoon and I think they are still having server issues as games kept breaking up and "migrating to another host". I hope that this is just a temporary problem given the number of people online straight after the release of the game otherwise it could get a bit frustrating.

Overall it is an improvement on MW2 with a much better story for the singleplayer campaign and much bigger and more varied battle zones in the online part of the game. I thinks its an interesting twist to have to build up points to purchase and upgrade weapons and perks.

I have struggled up to Level 14 as I have always been cr*p at these sorts of games. I'm still to win a game and seem to hinder any team that I am part of in team deathmatch mode. I think that my reactions are slower than everyone elses.

Hmm, first impression has been of disappointment. Hosted servers are a good thing but it's no Battlefield 2 or Day of Defeat/Counter-Strike Source.

Wasn't a fan of Treyarch's campaign in Call of Duty: World at War - but I rather enjoyed it online (PC) - and this has been a bit boring too.
Zombie mode was a hoot in CoD:WaW but it seems like same old, same old here and really hasn't moved on or improved in my experience so far.

The sniping was/is awful in Battlefield 2 but as a online shooter for getting people to work together - particularly on infantry only maps - I think it is still yet unsurpassed. Haven't played any of the Bad Company series or Battlefield 3 Beta mind.
  • Loved it. Bought it on release day, and then promptly sat down with my housemate, with a crate of peroni, for 10 hours, on hardened, and completed it!

(Although im just 19, I think I trump the lot of you in terms of sadness for that)

The storyline was brill, if a little hard to follow with the beer flowing, although it all comes clear in the end. Loving all the slo-mo breach scenes. Always a fave.

Previous people do have a point though, the graphics treyarch have come up with seem almost a little more "gritty" than MW2. Thats the only way I can put it nicely. They remind me alot of COD3. Which does seem a little bit of a step back.

In all, its top notch. Not an improvement on MW2, but every bit as good as.

Tonight is the night where I sit down and complete it on veteran. Beer run....

Just thought I'd let you guys know for future reference.

I ordered my copy of Black Ops from Amazon. It arrived with me a day early on Monday, so whilst the muppets were standing in the cold and the rain to get the first copies, I was sitting at home, in the warm, playing it already.

That in it self gave me a somewhat smug feeling 8) , but things have got better. I've just had an email from Amazon. They have a price promise, have found it somewhere cheaper, and have refunded me the difference :D

So, order from Amazon and there's a good chance you'll get the game a day early, and at the best price. Can't be bad !!

  • My copy arrived this morning so I managed a few games online, the joys of being self-employed
Lag, lag and more lag. It's not usually too bad at this kind of time so I'm not looking forward to playing it tonight.
Pretty much the norm for CoD so far. Campers, glitchers, and people running all over the place with double pistols. If they can sort out some of the bugs it should be a decent game though. The maps I've seen seem well designed. I'll start on the singleplayer campaign whenever it's too laggy online.

Huh, people who play FPS' on consoles  The poor mites... :P

Must say I'm getting into it now. Initial disappointment has subsided. Think the campaign is quite nicely structured - think th gulag stuff is a bit naff - but other than that I'm enjoying it.

Multiplayer seems abit more balanced than MW2. I started playing the game type on MW2 that banned killstreaks as I thought it became far too biased. Someone called in a Apache and the round was virtually over, or obvsiously a tactical nuke and it was.
Other than the Huey gunner I've not encountered a killstreak bonus that has swayed around to that extent so far.

They have tried to make it more balanced, for that exact reason. Though I got a chopper gunner most rounds, so its not too good for me!

You play on PC? whats your steam tag?
