  • I was going to say the Focus ST, but hearing about £550 road tax made me cry a little bit on inside as another dream died (yes I did want the ASBO orange colour to go with my ASBO orange bike)

How about a Renault Megane Sport ?

Faster than all of your choices, and, purely coincidentally, i happen to be selling one

However, it means you can get a pretty fast motor for a very good price (mine is a mere £7k)

just a bit of banter, and I have owned 2...pug 106 and a Renault Clio.. in fairness the Renault has had no major faults yet (3 years old) but just annoying build quality issues- things like the glove box doesn't shut properly anymore.

I voted ST 'cos i'm quite partial to Fords. My S-Max (yes I know...) has got the same 2.5l 5 cyl turbo as the ST and it has a decent enough turn of speed to surprise a few 'warm hatched' even if it is a big old truck of a car. And the quattro style 5 sound is quite nice on full chat :)

About the £550 road tax on the ST - is that just for new cars? I renewed mine end of August and it was £210.

What's the S-max like to own? Looking to buy something like that in the new year. Most cars of this type seem to be french though.

I like it - and I'm a petrol head. It's a people carrier that drives like a car and if you get the ST engined version like I said it's almost good fun. Haven't tuned it yet

Reliability - fine, a few niggles sorted under warranty. Practicality - brilliant - tardis style amount of space which is ace for MTB'ing and kids. Lots of toys on the option list too like adjustable dampers and a really good trip computer with loads of buttons :) . Only real downer is that it drinks for England - I'm averaging about 20mpg on suburban stuff, best I've ever had on long trips is about 30.

335d? Has 428lb.ft of torque which is more than an artic, and can do 0-60 in 5.6 seconds which can beat some petrol cars.

  • I'd get a Volvo V70 T5, in white, along with a high visibility jacket and imagine myself as a copper on the chase every time a saxo vtr passes by.

I'd not be going for any of this fancy petrol nonsense. Diesel all the way for me. Just looking for something with more room. The MG is a nice enough car to drive, and gets great mileage, but the boot space is beyond shite. Thinking people carrier type thing, or estate. I'll probably just end up going for whatever I find the best deal on at the time though. I don't drive enough to pay much attention to what I'm driving if I'm honest.

welcome to the world of Berlingo/Partner ownership. Look like an old fart safe in the knowledge you can get everything you need in, tow a trailer and still get 50+ mpg safe in the knowledge it's cost you shed loads less than anything else like it. As soon as somebody works out how to retune the 110 bhp diesel I'm getting a new one.

The legend that was surf-matt. He was is the best surfer ever to frequent these pages with the most powerful supercar killing BMW touring and if you dare question his authority on anything he would baffle people with fugues of torque and Bhp! Nice bloke genrally but easily bated with such threads like " so I hate BMW drivers" or "my punto is quicker than any BMW" oh and he had a Suzuki that was awesome off road!

Thanks for all the replies fellas. Unless I've misinterpreted it, the info from Ford says an ST is in VED band K which is £550 per annum road tax, effective from 01/04/2010.

I'm off to the VW dealer.

The £550 is only for the first year to, and I quote "send a stronger signal to the buyer about the environmental implications of their car purchase" you evil, polar bear killing, poluting scum, with your desire to own a nice car rather than a Prius... I'm paraphrasing the last bit.

In the second year you pay the standard rate... I'd have a quiet word with the dealer and see if he'd subsidise it!

Thats exactly what the goverment want you to do, to make you think thats the tax you'll always pay but as Meesterbond said its not, its just the initial cost so dont be put off the ST as its an awesome motor I almost bought one when I test drove one instead of my current Mondy ST, I just needed something bigger and also the diesel played a large part.

If I had gone with my heart I would have gone straight for the Focus, its a real fun car to throw around, that 2.5 turbo engine is proper quick.
