Does anybody in this Country actually make anything any more?
What troubles me is that we all seem to be in customer service or support 'industries'. The money to buy our services comes from wages paid to people who use them. But if they're all in service industries as well, is it just the same money going round and round in circles?
Surely money has to be generated in the first instance by creating and sellling something - like a car or a washing machine or computer - but they're all made overseas now and we have to pay to have them imported. I just don't see where the money comes from in the first place :?Canyon XC 8.0 '11

Mechanical engineer. Hey I still get (some) prototypes and one off parts made in Britain. And I don't even work in Britain. Most of our manufacturing is now done in Poland. The way I see it, conditions and pay are rising over there, eventually things will equalize. Then of course we will move all our production to India and mess things up for both east and western Europe.0

sixth largest economy and just slipped to seventh. manufacturing wise we're not far from dropping out of the top 10 vying with the likes of russia, south korea, brazil. last year we accounted for 2.6% of world manufacturing output. in 1980 it was 6%.0 -
I work in a Chipboard factory. The Laminating part, you have kitchens, wordrobes, flooring ect? Then you have a 62% chance that I helped make it.

In any case, the assertion "we don't make anything anymore" is a pile of mouldy goats cheese. We make 2 and half times more stuffthan we did in 1950. We're efficient so we produce more with less people. Manufacturing hasn't shrunk, it's grown, but admittedly other areas have grown quicker.0 -
yeh, right. only if you're on crack cocaine and take the register seriously, and a comment piece at that.

To grow, it has to draw in other people's money by selling goods or exchanging services.
Something the previous government failed to comprehend by expanding the public faster than the private sectors. When the private sector reduced there wasn't enough taxes raised hence why the public services now need to shrink to the level of taxes available to fund it otherwise we have to borrow it and even governments have credit limits.0
