the air 94 looks good, but then most do with deep rims. looks like they could be going away from the cycle to work market, which may be an error as a lot of "real cyclists" won't buy from halfords.

Team carbon now has 105, is 1/2lb heavier and £300 more expensive?
No longer my next bike I'm afraid

You'd have to be a weak minded and/or snobby individual to refuse to buy a particular bike because it's only available from a particular chain. Just buy it boxed and build it yourself.

    Where's the weight come from?

    This.
I'm not a Real Cyclist, there's no way I'm spending over £1000 on a bike up front, it's only the C2W that would make me think of spending that much.
By holding the original Team Carbon at £1K, it became the bike for C2Wers - I've no idea what percentage of sales were C2W but I'll bet it was huge.

If you meant "where did you find the figure?":
The Boardman website - click on the Spec tab & you'll see it's 18.2lbs, the old one was 17.6 i.e. the magic 8kg.

Or did you mean "what's heavier"? I don't know, and I'm aware that it's not such a big issue in reality (especially when I'm not quite halfway through trying to lose 24lbs) it just seems a bit much to take when the price is getting hiked.

My original Team Carbon was a revelation, I was orignally persuaded by the CW "10/10" review and the overwhelmingly positive comments from buyers (never mind the comments about Halford!), but I'll be shopping round a bit more for a comparable £1K bike when the C2W payments finish & I can start again.

The move to 105 must add around 1lb to the bike's weight? Heavy groupset compared to Sram / Campag.

Pricier yes,but still competive given that the big manufcturers have hiked their prices considerably too.£1800 seeems to be the going rate for a 105 equipped carbon bike these days so £1500 would be competive in 2011.

Got to agree here. It does not look as good value as the last version (isn't that the same with most brands 2011 bikes??) but it is still very competitive compared to mainstream manufactures.

What other 105 carbon bikes are available for less?

I think they also look better than the older models, and this has thrown me into a quandry over what bike to get with my £1800 C2W voucher - Pro Carbon, Felt F5 or Cannondale Supersix 105!!

You can build most of the Ribble carbon frames with full 105 for way less than £1500. I suspect the same may be true for Planet X as well.

I'd go for the Super Six out of those choices.

I think you might be being a bit unrealistic. I'd imagine they were making very little, if any, money on the Team Carbon model. No-one else was selling a full Rival carbon bike for under a grand with good reason - doesn't make money! Even if you do have Halfords purchasing power.
Essentially did this to get the brand out there (worked well IMO) so now the brand and the model are established, they can actually start making a bit of money now people know the bikes aren't donkeys.
For what they are they're still good value, high quality bikes.
The only thing I don't agree with is the move to Rival to 105 - a lesser, heavier grouppo? What's that about?
I think now they will sell the top end models through Halfords for a year or so to keep them at extremely competitive prices and then when these bikes are more established they will get a dealer network together and stop selling them through Halfords.

Rival better than 105? That's debatable TBH.

Honestly, their pricing is only in line with what every other manufacturer has done. Less for more. But maybe with Boardman you're getting nearly the same for more rather than less.

If you look at a Specialized Allez Elite for example, a few years ago it was carbon seat-stays and 105. Now it's full alu and Tiagra. I think Boardman are doing well to hold their line at 105. The frames look quality IMO.

The Alu team will simply become the C2W'ers choice.

i bagged my boardman comp xmas eve for £550 with a free boardman bottle (got to haggle!). All I can say is that although I do like the white 2011 comp, it is rrp'ed at £799. What a jolly good decision I made.

The budget race version seems to be occupying the spot the comp used to take and is price at £650 and looks crap with sora.... Looks dark blue on their site, orrible!

There is only so much price hiking they can do and it's safe to say I will make my bike last me forever before I'm willing to pay prices like that. My salary is not shooting upwards so they'll go the same way as any other bike maker. Specialized for example - over priced. Good riddance to all of them. Rant over!

Well whether you prefer using one or the other is up to the individual.
Fact is, it's half a kilo heavier, so that's largely where the extra weight on the Team Carbon is coming from.

Some nice bikes in the new Boardman Range but !

I would have liked to have seen the Boardman range starting to be sold by some of the better Bike Shops in the UK. I did not mind buying my Team Carbon Via Halfords when they were available for under a grand, but at £1299 with the extra weight and - Sram Rival and with the bad service and after care of Halfords. I would not be prepared to pay the new higher prices and still have to deal with Halfords. Boardman need to break the link with Halfords.

Such a move would add considerable distribution costs. You can buy them on line, just like Planet X, Ribble etc if you can't stand the shame of being seen inside a Halfords store.

The Boardman website says you need to straighten the handlebars and fit the pedals, that's it. The rest is done by Boardman before it gets boxed.

Otherwise find a good Halfords. There are plenty of good ones out there.

  • Glad to see lots of love for the Boardmans :)

Anyone tempted by the 2011 Team Carbon I would atke a good look at the spec compared to the 2010.. I have the 2010 and am not tempted by the 2011...

... I am however tempted by the Air 9.4! That's one sexy ass bike!

Also check the FB page for news, pics and discussions on Boardman Bikes! Not run by Boardman or Halfords so open opinions welcome! No post will be deleted... unless blatent spam or abuse ;)

I paid £560 for my Road Comp just after Christmas including M540 Pedals and race guards which I thought was a great buy. Whilst the white colour scheme freshens the idea up, I'm pleased I bought when I did.

If I was to buy a Boardman MTB to join the Roadie, I'd be looking at a 2nd hand Team or Pro rather than one of the newer models.
