Unfortunately my C2W scheme voucher is with Halfords and my firm's scheme closes at the end of September. Is it worth getting the voucher and waiting for the 2011 range to come out?

Does anyone have any idea when this might be?

  • Late October apparently. Seems strange that we haven't seen any pics or reviews yet. I guess they're trying to sell the 09/10 range first so they don't have to discount them.

A Halfords employee posted elsewhere that the new bikes won't hit the stores until the end of this year/start of next year.

  • Team Carbon bikes r now £1199 so most people who get 1000 on cycle to work will no longer be able to buy this bike, why o why would they do this! as they will lose alot of sales.
  • Forgot to mention that its for the old model as well, beyond belief !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I imagine that's the reason why they've done it.

Stock is running quite low, so they are trying to discourage C2W people taking them (as if they can't have one of those, they have to choose something else from Halfords).

I believe that the factory is now producing (or is about to start producing) the 2011 models, so there is a limited supply of 2010 bikes.

This also means that when it comes time to clear off the last few, they can claim that the bike is reduced by £200.
  • I'm looking forward to the 2011 range as am considering a Team Pro (Work have increased C2W to £2k per year over 36 months!)

Will be interested in seeing what the changes are. As the spec improved from 2009 to 2010, perhaps the frame may have some changes for 2011?

I see them as like the Scoobies and Evos of their day. 911 slayers for Mondeo money.

These cars have gradually moved more up market and got more expensive. I see the same happening with today's pocket rocket carbon road bikes. I suspect that Boardman, Planet X and the like may stay cheap in 2011 but if they do it will be solely due to sterling exchange rates. The trend for them to get more expensive will be unstoppable.

  • I ordered a Boardman Comp 2010 for use as a winter bike this week, I went to collect it today from Belfast Halfords Boucher Road store, I am still shocked, the bike was built in the store, supposed to be ready for me to ride it home, when I looked the bike over it was badly scratched in 3 places and very dirty.the bottom frame tube looked like it was even cracked slightly where it was scratched, I was told the person who did the PDI did not notice the scratchs etc. I just do not believe that, I think the bike was a return or a display model, I was told they could order me a replacement but it would take 3 - 4 weeks. I just took a refund. I just had no confidence in buying from staff who could handover a bike to a customer in that condition.

Halfords staff and service is a lottery, I Bought my Team carbon from a different branch in Belfast, (Conswater branch) and the bike and service was super sadly they did not have any Boardman comps in their stock.

anyway moan over, the day finished up ok with me getting a Genesis Aether 2010 from my LBS :)

how have your work done that??
the government have tightened up the rules (as has been discussed on this site). I was under the impression that 1k is the max you can get and 18months is max time of the agreement. :?

i would double check you are infact getting the bike at the c2w discount, not just a finance package from your work (which may cost you more)

JK that's shocking. Glad you got a result in the end.

The stores really are like Marmite. My local one is superb but one 10 miles up the road is awful. Shame, as it impacts on the perception of the bikes. That said I have had similar experience with LBS. In Chelmsford, the only LBS I would use is Chelmer Cycles. They are excellent, but you pay for quality.

Will look into it but the full details haven't been released yet. I'm pretty sure it's C2W as that what it was last year and all I read on the Intranet were they were increasing the C2W amount, can spread repayments over a longer period and Halfords have partnered up with 70 addition retailers. Will read all of the t&c when the full details come out and we can choose our benefits for next year.

You're better off doing it on an interest free CC deal unless you're a higher rate tax payer. As for more than £1k - you can do that if your company has a credit licence but I don't think the part over £1k gets any tax benefit.

Hi guys. Slightly off topic. I've just ordered a Boardman Comp 2010 off the Halfords website, and had to get it delivered instead of picking it up at the store. Cannot wait for it to arive!

I have a question though, will it come built or boxed? The guy at the store said I would have had the option when I ordered it, but I didn't see this option.

Will I need any specialist tools to put the bike together?

Also the guy in the store said they don't offer bike building service for bikes ordered off the internet.

Would you advise getting the bike checked over at my LBS? I don't think the LBS owner will be happy I bought from Halfords, and not him!

    Thanks!

EDIT: Sorry for all the questions, here is another! I have a set of Shimano RS20 wheels with Schwalbe Laguna tyres. Is it worth putting them on the boardman instead of the boardman's stock wheels?
  • Hi good luck with your Boardman comp,
The wheels are the same as the ones on the Team Carbon they are pretty good wheels I would use away at them first, the Boardman bikes are great I was unlucky with the one I ordered, It was badly scratched when I went to collect it built in the store sadly. I am going to order another Boardman Comp next year as I really want one as a stand by for my Team Carbon, The Genesis Aether is a very nice bike but it feels more like a Touring type bike to me compared to the Boardmans, I will keep the Genesis and use it in the bad winter weather, and for Touring as it is a sturdy hack,
Not sure about how much you would have to do reference building it yourself, I would take the bike to a LBS if you are not sure about building it yourself, if you do not have the tools it will be cheaper in the long run, buy some pedals or other stuff you need to keep them sweet :)

If you have a go make sure you use a torque wrench when tightening things up.

Indeed It is a shame because the Boardman Bikes are great, It will not put me off getting another one in the future from a different branch of Halfords.
I wonder when they will be sold by the LBS's

The problem with selling them through LBS is having a distribution network to feed the shops. If Boardman did that, the bikes would be 20-25% more expensive and would be selling at what they are worth, compared to rival brands.

What it needs is better training in the Halfords stores. Some stores make it work, so why can't all of them?

Giving the staff shirts that show their level of training would be a great start and would give them a bit of pride in the job. Apollo, Carrera and Boardman shirts as they progress up the training regime would let customers seek out someone who knew about the bikes they were looking to buy, or the bike they wished to have serviced. It would certainly save people getting the Apollo lad and walking out after he tried to 'wing' it.

  • I went to the other branch of Halfords where I bought the Team carbon today, had a chat with the guys there and told them what happened, they have ordered me another Boardman comp from their main warehouse, It will be here next week, I should get it on Friday if everything works out to plan. :D

    Keeping my fingers crossed everythings
    OK this time :)

The 2011 boardman range will be out around February 2011 which is 100% confirmed! Unfortunately halfords do get a bad name sometimes however I do know many stores in Essex/Suffolk who are very competent in the field. (cytec trained etc)
  • Hi all, just to update you

Ref my Halfords buying experience, I collected my Boardman comp today the bike was in mint condition, and built up very well, I am very pleased with it I had a nice ride home on it :D

Many Thanks to the guys from Bike Hut Conswater.
  • Sorry to bump this one back up but I thought it would be better than a new topic.

Anyway, does anyone have any details of the 2011 range. I've got my £1000 cheque sitting here and want to spend it.
No XL's left on the 2010 stock so must be something comming soon.

    Cheers,

    Cramman
  • I have not seen anything yet about the 2011 range, keep an eye on Boardmans new Face book page

I'd spend it now if I were you!! The new Team Carbon is 1299 and Pro Carbon 1799 (at least that is what the guy in my local Halfords found on the computer before xmas).

  • If you get this weeks edition of Cycling Weekly, on the first few pages it has photos and info about Boardmans 2011 range.

They look alot different then the old models (alot more aero).

From what the writers say they are going to be great bikes and well worth a look. I think prices start around £1800 upwards, depending on drive train and wheels.

I would of looked at one but ive just forked out £2000 grand on my new steed. I blame Boardman for waiting so long to bring out the new range. I bet they have lost alot of sales becauce of it.

Won't they be the Elite range which is reviewd on a lot of other sites saying 2k and above..

I presume they will still be bringing out a 2011 Road range...
  • See attached for link to cycling weekly review - http://www.cyclingweekly.co.uk/news/pro ... range.html

Bike porn is all I can say - was thinking of buying one last year but now have a spankingly hot black carbon Felt with SRAM red. Having said that I might be tempted to buy a race only bike from the new Boardman range.
Pain hurts much less if its topped off with beating your mates to top of a climb.
  • Thanks for the replies.

I'm hoping there will still be a budget range as they no longer have any xl's available.

Just have to wait and see I guess. If not halfords can still supply the Dolan mythos so not all shall be lost.
  • just seen the new Team 2011 in the window of Halfords Wimbledon. New store opens on the 25th.
Team = full 105, Mavic wheels, grey, £999
    Comp = £799, couldn't see spec
