Stephen Hawking hasn't disproved God. He hasn't claimed to have disproved God. Nobody can ever, or will ever, disprove God.

What Hawking has done is to present a theory for the physical process that could have led to the big bang. Previous to the development of this theory, nobody had any idea what might have happened before the big bang, other than 'God did it'. However, the existence of this theory doesn't mean 'God didn't do it'.

I'm not a religious person. I don't believe in God. I just get annoyed when people try to twist science to their own ends. By doing so, they're as bad as the fundamentalists who twist their religious documents to justify whatever hatred they want.

Personaly i do belive in god, and in Creation as oposed to evolution, but i have little problem with people who do belive in Evolution, and i take a huge intrest in science and the physical proceses involved in the formation of the universe.... I also thing Steven Hawking is a great man, and i have massive respect for him and his great work.... so i too would agree that those who twist people words to suit their belifes are stupid... i dont impose my belife on anybody... i do tell them about it if they wish, and i do reason with them if they want to talk... but i would never force my personal thoughts on another.

I really applaud people like you, in a world where it seems increasingly rare to find someone who can have their religious beliefs, and yet still allow others to have their scientific views (or vice versa, of course).
When I was in school, there never seemed to be any conflict of interest between RE classes and science. Even though we were young, we could still draw that distinction between religion and Science, and I think it's truly shameful that such a large minority is trying to opress the theaching of either at schools.

While I was at college, one of our biology teachers was a priest*.

He was a damn good teacher too. We got to inflate goose lungs until they popped.

Not once did anything other than purely scientific reasoning come into a lesson.

    *No dodgy business either.

I'm interested to hear what the purely scientific reasoning for blowing up goose lungs is?

    Also, any pics? :D

Application of the gas laws? Though that would be arguably better suited to chemistry or physics than biology...

Nah, it started out as a normal dissection and the blowing up just happened to be for fun, because there was a pump nearby.

Meh, I was brought up Catholic and believe in God and Evolution. And school although taught us catholic's were always right, we also got taught to accept all other religions, or people with no religion.

  • Whos this God chap? Does he ride a MTB?

I'm fairly open minded... I lived with a guy in Uni that had bible readings in the house every wednesday, I even went to football evenings with him and lads from his church.....

But i don't believe in fairy tales unfortunately.

If there is a simple method of protecting his health it would seem insane not to use it because of a work of fiction written during the Bronze Age.

    Seems appropriate.

A friend of a friend got married recently. The bride's dad was the vicar, and during the ceremony he started going on about how his daughter was essentially now the groom's property because they were married and her proper place was the home. They also had to say "until death do us part, or Jesus comes again" during the vows.

So when people 'hear god' speaking to them, should they be held under the Mental Health Act?

At my daughter's leaving mass (Catholic school), the Bishop said something very similar - "Talk to God every day, tell him your problems, he'll always be there to listen. If he starts to answer you back, you probably need therapy..." Legendary. :D

    agreed.

surely it would make more sense when presented with evidence of things like evolution, for religious people to reply...

thing is....there is still so much that science has been unable to explain...

the most sensible religious people I have met have always said...god created all things....evolution was the mechanism by which he created us etc
Whenever I see an adult on a bicycle, I believe in the future of the human race.

thats the hip new way the church explains the evidence of evolution....they call it creationism.

and its just as much carp as the rest of the poison they bash on about.
  • The only problem i have it with it all is that religion can be molded to fit almost any argument adn to justify almost any veiw point. That is why i think religion (Not faith or belief) is one of the most dangerous institutions ever.

i stayed out of the windows / mac debate as it doesnt matter what computer you have.

but this subject is important to me.

I personally think the creationist (well, the extreme one, rather than the 'god created evolution' thing - I've got no beef with that) stance is pure drivel. If some grand being made humans, then they'd make a much better job. Unravelling telomeres, receptors in the retina on the wrong bloody way round, the appendix! Organs hanging from the back, not the top which'd be much better structurally. The ear. What's up with that?

He/she did a good job on the boobs front though.

I own both. They're both crap for different reasons. So's linux. Everything's rubbish.

    WOW, just WOW.
We're talking about actual religions, and you bring up Windows/Mac? Holy crap.

You know, making this stuff important to yourself is partially the cause of the problem. Why the hell care what anyone else believes in.
If folks like you, and religious fundamentalists, and, well, everyone, adhered to that, we wouldn't have a problem.
