I was thinking about this earlier. Look at this -

Honda%20CBR%20600%20-1000.jpg
Honda CBR 600

£8.5 grand

And this -

Cervelo R5ca with Di2 and Cheap Easton EA50 SL Wheels.
£9k

Crazy.

What's worse is I'd prefer the 2nd option...

  • Is that front tyre on back to front? At least the valve stems are at six o'clock.

Tough choice. I'd probably go with the first option though since I currently don't own a motorbike. (Waiting until I'm 21 then doing the DAS thing is my plan).

Yeah, I love the new Colnago C59 but to build that up to a decent spec would cost a bomb and I am realising we pay a lot of money for, and forgive me saying this, just a bike. Why are carbon wheels so expensive ? Is it for warranty issues ? Can carbon and moulds/ovens cost so much ? I'm an engineer and buy a lot of parts for my company, bearings don't cost much, neither do tools, etc so why does a thin piece of lycra jersey cost £60 ?

I'm in a bad mood now.

Thank heavens, whilst they don't match their high end cousins, most major manufacturers have a frame option which exceeds the requirements of all but a few riders for a relatively modest amount of cash. Quality carbon for all.
If you chase the Holy Grail then prepare to be fleeced on the way.
Mine would be the Honda .. Jazz that is!

A mate was rebuilding some hubs.
If he got the bearings from a bike shop, via a bike part supplier from the manufacturer of the hubs it was going to cost him £15

But being a farmer he went to a parts depot and asked them if they had "one of these", 40p.

Those Rotor cranks only have the steel axle, I spent the extra £150 or so to have the Titanium axle option...oh Christ, your right, we really are (well, I really am a) mugs.

I am so easily parted from my cash for bloody bike stuff, and none of it makes the torture I endure in training any easier!

  • the pic on your post is actually a CBR 1000RR which are nearly 11 grand for the ABS version, its a 600 on the link, but if i had a spare 8.5k it would be the CBR no question then i could replace the 14 yr old 600 ive had for 12 yrs,i just could not spend that amount of dough on a pushbike no matter how good it was.

Swap the cheap Easton Wheels for some Zipps and put some more expensive bars and some pedals on the Cervelo and that will be 11k...

In a way your comparing apples to oranges, that CBR is little more than a £800 alloy framed hybrid, the frame you posted is a little more special.

To make it more even I'd suggest you compare it to this little sausage -

    http://www.ducati.com/bikes/superbike/1198_r_corse/index.do

Then the prices start to fall a little more in to line. :)

That CBR is still good, hybrids are slower than road bikes because it takes more effort to push em, but when you're just sitting on a bike that can average 70mph for thousands of miles I don't see why it matters

I was comparing price with price...

It was a way of saying 'look at how much we pay for some small bits of plastic, alloy and titanium when we could get something far more engineered for the same.'
  • When you consider how good frames are that cost considerably less than 4.5K those prices are riddiculous. No doubt they're excellent frames but the companies are just taking advantage of the rich and the gullable.

If you're wealthy enough fair play, if you're gullable no one will be able to convince you, you've been "had" so to speak.

Yes Cyclists, fishermen, archers etc are MUGS!!!!!!!!!!!

If you could afford an Aston Martin and went out and bought one would you feel like you've been 'had'? Or would you feel great because you'd bought a pinnacle in craftsmanship, engineering and design?

Although for that sort of money I'd expect Mr Vroomen to come to my house, measure me up for the frame and hand deliver it when it was finished!

Time was that many of the Aston parts, switchgear etc could be found on the Ford mondeo (they were owned by Ford). Rolex bought their chronograph movts. from eg Zenith. Just remember the adage that no one got rich under-estimating the public

  • PS I think the phrase you're looking for is "no-one got rich overestimating the public".

If you underestimate them (ie take them for mugs) then, as this thread demonstrates, you'll make a fortune.

(Goes off to ensure seat post is aerodynamic enough)

Are you sure? I know TVR used to do that.

But back to Aston - how many people can say that their engine was handbuilt by one man - who put his nameplate on the engine? And that the panels were hand rolled!

Absolutely true. Switch gear came from the humble Mondeo. A Lambo Gallardo has Audi A8 switchgear & my Lotus has indicator stalks from a Vauxhall Combo van.
  • I believe the point of the OP is how can a company produce an entire motorcycle (not just a ramshackle crapper) for less than it costs another company to produce the frame and fork of a "push bike". Are the well heeled who could afford such a frame/fork being ripped off. In my opinion yes they are.

Chip Voyler, the maker of that frame are just chalking up massive profit margins and depend upon people with your viewpoint to maintain the myth.
