Not that I have really followed punk over the last 10 or 15 years but I still hear things, but for my money it never got better than "London Calling".

What are the obvious reasons? Is it the era or some view of their music?

Personally I would rate Green Day as a top ten punk band. Seen them twice and they are absolutely corking live. Can't inderstand why you wouldn't call them punk other than for the generation they are or some snobbism.

Also surprised nobody has half man half biscuit either. The most punk crowd I think I've ever seen at a gig was half man half biscuit. Damn fine moshing! or wrecking if you prefer!

I think that Green Day are OK, but nothing special. Just my opinion.

punk was finished by about 1980 - everything else is 'post-punk'.....which is what Green Day are, I guess....

Fair enough. Can't argue with personal taste.

That's what I was trying to understand really. I can accept somebody saying they're not a punk band because they are not from the era. I was probably feeling a little defensive that somebody might be suggesting they're not the genuine article. Now that would get the juices flowing. They are without a doubt one of the best live acts there is and I peronally class them as punk. Not a blinkered ”they're my favourite band” opinion but one of somebody with pretty broad tastes who knows he seen something pretty special in their gigs. Anyhow, get me! I'll shut up now.

Siouxsie (spelling ?) supported Green Day recently and I would have described that as plain old rock music. Funny old world innit!

My idea of Punk is the original movement one from the 70s.

The Green Day comment was in fact a poor attempt at humour on my part! (I do actually like Green Day but the American idea of Punk is different to mine!)

getting back to the original subject, I saw the Stranglers at the Loch Lomond festival in 1979 and it put me off festivals so much that I've not been to one since.

I am however going to the v festival in a few weeks time. bit wary to be honest

That'd be me then! Hey ho never mind. Still a f**kin awesome band.

All I'll add on the subject is that I gave up being anal about all this stuff many years ago. (i'm anal about all sorts of different stuff instead).

There's always somebody can ride a bike quicker and there's always somebody who knows more about you in whatever subject you're prattling on about at any given time. Life is too short!

  • saw this and had to join, yes the classic punk years ended around 1980, but the new punk era has some real winners too, The Clash and the Ramones were a softer more understandable punk where Iggy and the Pistols were more loud screaming and the Dead Kennedys were more political.
The new era has the same type of punk with SKA music, and unfortunanly Screamo and of course our political bands also. So mixing eras my top ten would be:
    1. The Distillers
    2. Youth Brigade
    3. Dead Kenndys
    4.Anit Flag
    5. The Casualties
    6. Operation Ivy
    7.Ramones
    8.Flogging Molly
    9. The Vandals
    10. Dropkick Murphys
    11. GOA my son's band- they will are amazing.
If it aint fixed its broke.

my mate plays lead for department s and they still are killin it.

Ha ha is Vic still there.

Just wondering if any one can name any welsh punk bands. the irish had SLF/undertones/outcasts/radiators from outer space etc,

Scottishland gave us the skids/post punk postcard popsters OJ/ lena zavaroni and lulu

I know the Alarm came from rhyl (which is technically a part of merseyside), and Young Marble Giants (with the beautiful ALison) came from cardiff but not really punk.

Peel used to play Anhrefn and Datblygu alot but....early welsh punk, I couldnt name one.
