Whats wrong with your bike?

Currently I have:
A creaky headset.
A noisy bottom bracket.
A front derailleur cable that is frayed and keeps slipping.
A broken innertube valve so I can't inflate the tyre but its still holding pressure.
Pedals not hanging freely leading to clipless moments.
Slightly buckled back wheel.

I've booked my bike into my LBS for the headset and bottom bracket, I'll also buy a new derailleur cable when I'm there.
I'll replace the innertube when the pressure drops too low.
The pedals will get a rebuild one day when I'm not to busy.
I'll live with the back wheel as its not buckled too badly and its not rubbing the brakes.

I'll put the bike on light duties until its appointment with my LBS apart from the SCR Summer Gathering in RP but it means the headset and bottom bracket will still be noisy.

Nothing wrong with mine. Just done a sportive in the Peak District and it was faultless; no creaks, squeaks, clunks and it did not miss a single gear change in 100 hilly miles (not even those tricky ones where you go from a fast descent to a steep climb and have to drop two rings on the front). Perfick.

As for the rider, now that's a different story!

My main bike's developed a worrying rattle, discovered when I turned the bike upside down to fix a p*ncture. It's coming from the downtube and I'm waiting 'til I'm off next week to discover what it is.

I have been wondering about this for a while, and I think that its biggest problem is loneliness. I think I need to get it a friend.

Forgive me if I get these names wrong...

When riding in the middle crankset?, and largest gear on the cassette? I get that noise.. .I don't know how best to describe it.

But it's pretty annoying as I like that gear.
  • At the moment, Chain is worn and knackered the gears, also BB is graunchy.

I tried a new chain this weekend and it slipped on the smallest 2 gears so I put the old one back on. Luckily I've still got an un-worn triple chainring so I only need a new cassette, but I need a longer BB or a spacer because the shifter won't go to the inner gear (ATM it's a double).

I gave everything a clean and lube, and noticed on this mornings commute the BB is a lot quieter than it was, but there was a horrendous headwind so I can't tell if it's any faster.

Your'll be needing the Shimano Di2 then ;)

Flexy headset, could probably do with new gear cables and chain as well. Do you need specialist tools to put in a new headset? If not I'l have a go at doing it myself. It's on my old road bike which is now the turbo and winter training bike.

    on the commute/hack bike,

to be honest the entire drive chain, though the bottom bracket really does need to be replaced soon....

but I'll replace the rest, at some point, ie when the chain snaps probably!

Cage spring bust on the derailleur of the Dawes. Still changes gear but a bit Skippy Longstocking.

Got home from Sundays ride and found some old Shimano thing on Ebay which I won for six quid including postage so hopefully I can fit it before the weekend.

More importantly, the head badge has fallen off and got lost. Where can I find a late 80s Dawes headbadge? :(

Main thing wrong with my bikes is that they are too darn slow.

    Langster
    - RH spider is too worn against BB spindle and is "jammed on". Daren't dissemble.
    - Tektro calipers totally shot. Virtually nil braking
    - needs new bar tape
    - needs full "strip down" service after a hard winter's use. Incl re-grease BB, seatpost, headset
    - rear wheel bearings are shot and need replacing / adjusting

    Trek 5900
    - headset top cap is wrong and headset rattles.
    - SRAM Red rear mech not quite indexing properly
    - BB cable guide (under the BB shell) isn't quite long enough for the frame
    - front mech trim settings need adjusting
    - needs new bar tape
    - need to sort out and fit aerobars
    - pedal tension (R) needs attention

    Trek 5500
    - need to sort out creaking cranks
    - annoying brake lever clamp bolt keeps loosening (really need (/want) new TT brake levers)
    - need to sort out position / bar height for low-pro bars
    - need to change the gripshift for bar end lever (rear mech only)
    - aero wheels need trueing and new cassette fitting

    Tricross
    - rear hub bearings need adjusting
    - headset slightly loose
    - needs a longer stem (120 rather than 110)
    - 2nd pair of wheels needs setting up with new cassette & tyres for off-road use

    Tandem
    - fit a replacement rear seatpost (so the saddle can get low enough for my 8 yr old)
    - adjust rear bars for children's reach

    Cannondale tourer
    - replace worn rear mech
    - replace shifters
    - grease / service BB and seatpost
    - fit new saddle
    - new bar tape

    Raleigh
    - needs complete overhaul. Not operational

    Trek 1400
    - needs building up from donor bike (Giant)

    Pace MTB
    - needs new brake levers fitting
    - needs new rear tyre

    Daughter's bike
    - needs brakes re-cabling
    - rear mech & shifters servicing / replacing

    Spare child's bike
    - new chain
    - replacement cables throughout
    - new tyres

I think that might be quite enough to be getting on with at the moment!

    Oh forgot about the following:

    Brompton
    - rear bung service & lube
    - pedal service (folding one)

    Neighbour's Orbit tourer
    - new bar tape
    - service Veloce ergopower levers (incl sourcing replacement internals)
    - new gear cables
Commute: Langster -Singlecross - Brompton S2-LX

Road: 95 Trek 5500 -Look 695 Aerolight eTap - Boardman TTe eTap

    Offroad: Pace RC200 - Dawes Kickback 2 tandem - Tricross - Boardman CXR9.8 - Ridley x-fire

Rear disc has annoying kink I can't seem straighten, makes a slight click every rotation as it catches the pad and moves it slightly in the housing, no real drag but sure wish I could stop it!

None of my 3 bikes have any kind of problems at this current moment

The audax bike did have a mudguard problem ( see "The Bikes Weakest Part" blog) but I have replaced the bolt that fell off. Must get some new mudguards before big event at the end of July

The summer commute Orbea racing bike seems pretty much ok. I did a bit of maintenance on this bike back in spring but it has been trouble free since then.

The proper commuter bike with mudguards and Alfine had a puncture last week! First in 12,500km. This bike was new this year so I wouldn't expect too many problems

    Excellent thread idea!

Dunno what all is wrong but there seems to be noises coming from every part of both bike and rider

My Cannondale - the bit thats sits on the saddle.

My Birdy - the seatpost slips constantly, I've had to put a bolt through to stop the full clown effect of riding with my knees going past my ears after a couple of miles, and it's usual aluminumy creaking like Norman Bates loft floor

Not much with the new fixie, I just need to angle the bars up a bit, when I put it together I didn't do the bolts up tight enough so it's slowly slipping!

Maxima, nothing wrong with the bike, rider is vastly incompetent.

Tifosi, again nothing wrong apart from the pedal and saddle to handlebar interface.

@Spassypaddy - Shorter Rochford is my LBS of choice. I hear a few people have had some attitude from them, but they seem fine with me. I've been toying with the idea of trying Bike and Run, but I rarely have to use any LBS so Bike and Run may have to wait a while. I did buy a water bottle from there the other day though, partly so that I felt justified in hanging around and using their track pump.

New derailleur cable bought, just gotta fit it now.
New water bottle cage and water bottle bought.

strange crunching noise coming from the CX; shouldn't have got rid of the clicking pedals, as I couldn't hear it above them.

oh and chain needs a clean.

i wont go into shorter, they are rude and arrogant. my advice is use the cyclestore, ash and jay are two of the best people i know in the industry and jay is one of the few people that is allowed to work on my bike.

The 531 steelie is (still) in dire need of new paint, plus a new headset. Once this is done I'll fit the new 'guards I bought ages ago, and possibly treat it to some STIs and new bars. And a new saddle. And a seatpin...

It's just a hill. Get over it.
