So, it's been a while since I updated my post, and things have finally changed enough to add some more pics :) I won't say upgraded, because I haven't really, just changed some bits, to make it more 'trail' than 'xc', :)

Here she is, excuse the garden!!

    P8140357.jpg

    P8140358.jpg

    P8140359.jpg

    Changes from before:

FSA Gravity DH light bars, 710mm (Changed from Answer Carbon bars)

Exotic Stem, 80mm (Changed from FSA OS115 stem, 110mm - If I get on with the 80mm, a carbon one will be purchased)

Schwalbe Fat Albert 2.25, f&r (Changed from Nobby Nics, 2.1 f&r)

SRAM cassette, 11-26 (Changed from XT, 12-34)

RIchey comp seatpost, 400mm (From FSA post, which was too short)

On One inbred saddle (From Spesh BG saddle, loved the colours, matched the bike perfectly!)

I haven't ridden it yet with the new bars/stem/tyres, so can't tell you much about the ride, but in it's 'xc' version, it's a total beast.. weighs the same as before, between 23-24lbs :)

that looks superb, deffo my fave carbon 456 so far i reckon.
  • Fantastic bike! :D 24lbs is absolutely phenomenal for such a sturdy looking bike. What headset do you recommend? I am getting one this weekend. For those who who ride carbon fiber frames....

    :( I'm only 27... :lol::lol:

Thanks though, I love it.. went for a quick spin earlier, the new bar/stem combo with the fatter tyres have changed it completely! Feels a lot more sturdy now, just looking forward to pointing it down some bigger hills!

I'm not too worried about getting it any lighter now, its not what this build is about :) I think it has a great strength to weight ratio though 8)

As for headset, I have the on one smoothie mixer headset on mine, but have heard that the Hope and Chris King tapered headsets are amazing too.. still, the On-one headset is really smooth, I've got no complaints!

Sheepsteeth - cheers mate, appreciated :)

Hihi, I am only 32 and my wife was laughing hysterically about carbon frames when she read the article. :D I am currently riding to gorilla bikes Trek 6000 (a whopping 16.3 kilos) and Specialized Pitch Comp (Domain/Transition Revolution 32/Nevegals and Panaracer FR ... and it only weighs 15 kilos).

Talking of On-One, some people said the frame looks ugly. I think the design and looks are bloody gorgeous. It looks super solid and the same time very refined and minimalistic.

It is going to be my first carbon frame since the question about the headset. I want everything to go as smooth as possible. :D

    http://www.on-one.co.uk/i/q/HSOOSMTAPER ... ix-tapered

In order to install the fork, I need a crown race or TWO and On-One Smoothie Mixer Tapered Headset? Am I correct? I do not want to hammer the carbon frame too much. :( Are you riding size 18? I am 187cm tall and looking at geometry it looks like a perfect fir for me.

p.s. My wife approves your bike :D I am also building a carbon bike for her.

I found the shorter stem was a real improvement on my carbon 456. I went from 90mm to 60mm.

I'm liking the new saddle as well it compliments the fork well.

@bagelonwheels - I'm using the on one headset and it is really nicely built and v. smooth.

@ Olly, cheers mate, it feels a lot more responsive with the shorter stem, may go shorter yet, we shall see!!

@ Bagelonwheels - haha, glad the wife approves of the bike too!! I got my other half out on my retro Kona for her first bike ride in 10 years today, she enjoyed it too, so hopefully this will be the start of something beautiful!! (PM'd you about the headset stuff)

Mine is the 18" too, and I'm a shade over 6ft, it fits me perfectly :D

Following on from my last post, I took the o/h out on her first ride in 10 years today, using a 1997 Kona Hahanna that I picked up from ebay for a bargain! (Since got easton EA70 bars, FSA stem, Hucthinson Toro XC tyres and wellgo flats added, and more to come!)

She's talked about doing the London to Brighton next year, so thought best to get training early! Only did about 5 miles, but it was enough for a first ride for her! It's been a good day :D Anyway, some pics below (kept small at the request of the good lady!) :

The bike (needs a shorter stem)

And finally, the bikes currently at mine (Including my bros/Cabbij80's spesh)

2010 On One Carbon 456 (Mine)
2010 Spesh Fsr XC pro (Cabbij80's)
    1997 Kona Hahanna (For M'lady!)
    199? 'Dale M400 (Commute/pub)

Hihi, my wife really got into biking. She is pretty serious about it. She can do 35 miles run in a 2.30h mostly asphalt/light XC and a bit hilly stuff on our super heavy hardtails. :D On the weekends we do all mountain stuff. :D

I mostly hang out on mtbr but have been reading bikeradar for quite a while.

I think 18" is going to be a perfect fit.

Sounds good! My o/h is just getting into the cycling thing, so hopefully it'll stick!

Can't look at the pics, photobucket doesn't work on the work computer, but shall have a look when I get home later!

Didn't notice you were from Westchester, passed through (or near, can't remember too well!) there in 2007 on a tour of the East Coast (Mum lives near Charlotte, NC) Lovely area! :)

    Love the stealth look. :)
I was fortunate enough to get some 2009 EXC 150s below half price at chain reaction a while back, so keep your eye out, as bargains can be had out there.
They would be great on this bike.

Why did you change the bars btw?

Hihi, thanks! The scenery is really beautiful in New Your State. Not as spectacular for biking as Colorado is but I am quite happy since I can basically bike the entire year unless it gets a bit nippy. How is biking on your side of the pond? Does it really rain a lot? We both have EU passport (secret Europeans) and were thinking about working for our company in the UK. We do love outdoors and it seems I would have to live either on the Welsh border, Isle of Man or Yorkshire (and get run over by Clarkson).

Talking of 456, how is the rear tire clearance? I would like to get Nevegals small block 2.35. Did you use helitape on your bike for protection? Are you using a regular seatpost clamp (al)?

I need to say it again, your bike off the hook. Finally, I am going to have my first boutique bike. 8)

Thanks for the info Zaskar, I was looking at those too, but didn't have the funds at the time.. lol, I think you got the last pair! (They look great on your Enduro, must say! :D )

I changed the bars as the Answer carbons were feeling a bit short for the bike to be honest, I took them from my old Marin Mount Vision, and put them on here.. as the 456 is more of a 'trail' bike, I wanted it to be more aggressive up front.. the bars were a bargain, so trying them out at that length, if I get on with them (which I seem to be), I'll swap them out for carbon when funds allow (maybe 700mm) :)

Lol, it's a strange build, 710mm bars, Schwalbe Fat Alberts, and a roadie cassette.. lol, works for me perfectly though, my little frankenstein!

Haha, thanks again buddy, I appreciate it, I love the bike, and it does everything perfectly for me!

The riding over here can be great, depending on where you live.. obviously, Wales and Scotland are the 2 main places (most should agree with that), but I'm fortunate to live near the Surrey Hills, Swinley Forest and Tunnel Hill (check out Leith Hill/Pitch Hill/Barry Knows Better on youtube). Although not mountainous, they offer loads of maintained trails, which I'm nicely at home on :)

As for Clarkson, lol, he can be found in the Surrey area a lot too, as thats where Top Gear is filmed :)

Oh, and yup, it usually rains, but thats part of the fun!! (we do get some nice weather, it's been pretty good my way recently, but it's forecast to rain for the next few weeks..) Still, bad weather has never stopped me, I'm out in all weathers!

Edit: Forgot.. the tyre clearance is huge, as it's a British company, they've accounted for the amount of rain/mud we get, so it can take up to a 2.5" tyre, but the recommend between 2.0 and 2.3.. the Nevegals should be fine though!

No helitape, I have a chainstay protector made of an old inner tube, which I need to sort out, and a leather/carbon patch near the chainset to stop any chainsuck damage, but apart from that, nothing at all.. I'm not too worried about damage, it's covered by warranty and insurance, it's there to be ridden.. the downtube has also apparently been designed in a triangular way so that rocks/stones etc bounce off, rather than into it :)

And the seatclamp is a standard one, yep, it's this one.. I will be getting a QR one next payday though I think, or a joplin post or similar.. :)

Time for a few more pics.. nothing much has changed, apart from the bottom bracket, the XT finally failed, so I needed a replacement, went for a red Aerozine XC/AM BB (not that you can see it in the pics) from Superstar. Oh, and I've put the fender bender front guard back on, as the weathers getting a bit poor now..

Anyway, went out for a short blast after work, over to the Military Ranges, and discovered the high speed training test track (off road).. some great riding, some sandy, boggy riding too.. a great laugh, and well worth an hours riding! So, have a clean pic, a dirty (ish) pic, a pic used for the photo challenge (brother in the background) and a really bad pic of me riding (nothing flashy, just at the end of a short run, onto a fireroad.. just to show that this bike does get ridden!)

I think I'm finally getting used to not having rear suspension now, and absolutely love this bike :D
  • Very nice, did you actually use the high speed test track, chased by some equally high speed amoured jeep

Haha, we did ride the track mate, yea, and although not chased by a jeep, we were at one point chased by a pretty angry dog, so it kept us on our toes! There was also a suspension test track over there (meant for the larger vehicles), so we gave that a go too.. man, that wore me out!! Sadly no pics of that this time around!.

Was great fun too, and couldn't believe this is all 15 minutes ride from my doorstep.. :D
  • Sounds like a really good little track but i would be a tad nervous riding in an army test ground   and where it your front crudcatcher from i like that :)

Haha, it's after hours, so the track was empty :D

As for the mudguard, you can get it here or the newer version here. Fantastic bit of kit, keeps all of the cr@p out of your eyes!! Well worth the price, and you can barely see it :)
  • HAHA still looks awesome :) worth getting shot I reckon ;) and thanks alot will be ordering one :)

Stuck it all in one, to make it easier.. yep, they will do night maneuvers, but I'm quite lucky with the job I'm in, I can find out when they will be using the land.. Still, even if I didn't know, I'm sure I'd hear them coming!!

I like your thinking about the sniping though.. although the amount of flint etc up there, I was surprised to not get one yesterday!

Just spotted the new pics on the on-one site.

How are you finding the stem length?
