The ironic thing about football compared to cycling is due to the very different natures of the two sports and the skills/fitness required.

IMHO, to be a top class cyclist requires more fitness, but however, can be enjoyed at a lot lower level until you're 90 or whatever. Footie on the other hand requires less fitness in some respects but you're very fortunate if you can carry on playing beyond forty due to the nature of the sport.

Yeah I was thinking about that point too as I guess I'm a case in point...I can still ride a bike fine but had to give up football a couple of years ago due a farked ankle and my body had had enough of it. I was 32!

Hopefully I won't catch one minute of one game.

Hopefully England will get knocked out very early then this ridiculous england-mania chav display will cease once we have no hope of winning.

I really should go away on holiday at this time of year every four years. Utter rubbish!! Roll on Le Tour!!!!!!!!!

    Get in there,son!

Going out for a ride in a bit. Roads should be quiet.

Nearly all sh*t, cyclist-hating car drivers are football fans so they will be off the road topping up their beerguts for the next few hours, guaranteed.

    Cycling Fact in the UK

    1) Very small % of the nation are Cyclists / Into Cycling.

    2) 95% who are into cycling watch the Classics & the Grand Tours etc

    3) 95% of Cyclists actually cycle, train very hard, dedicate themselves - in all climatic conditions, they refuse lots of social outings due to the hobbie they love...basically Cyclists truly dedicate themselves?...all other cyclists I know do anyway?

    4) Guys well into there 60's still enjoy serious challenges on the bike.

World Cycling Fact - Pro Cyclists are some of the greatest atheletes the world has ever seen, training regimes are almost inhumane, the salaries are extremely low with regards to many other 'sports'.

    Football Facts in the UK

    1) The vast majority of the nation are into 'Football'

    2) 100% of 'guys into football' love watching Football.

    3) 95% of 'guys into football' haven't kicked a ball since there school days.

    4) The other 5% play a game of 5's once a week (if they can muster 10 guys from an entire factory floor)

    5) No guys over 30 ever play a 90min game of a 11's?

Why is it that the most popular sport in the UK has a 100% spectator support with only a tiny proportion actually playing the beloved game?

Pro Football fact - Some of the most overrated, overpaid Sports stars in the world with almost Movie star lifesyles?

I am being utterly truthful in what I have observed living 41 years in this country so far...these are just facts.

But I will probably watch a few games....I do love watching Brasil...they are just so different...

By facts do you mean stuff you made up?

You'd be surprised how fit decent-level footballers are. Try 90 minutes, full tilt at a decent level and see how you get on...

    Very narrow minded post IMO.

Absolutely no interest in watching any games on my part.I find all the patriotic flag waving propaganda offensive.Read a headline this morning re Harry Kewell who declared himself ready to 'fight for his country against the might of Germany'. Oh please. It will be funny when Australia gets knocked out in the first round.....papers here are trying to whip up some interest but the majority of the population just don't care.

Is that the same fat, complacent, mercenary Harry Kewell who couldn't give a chuff in the champions league final for Liverpool? I'll believe it when I see it Harry.

Went to my Dad's last night to watch part of the game. I had a bet on the US to win 2-1 and when they scored I had to fake my dismay  Sadly they got no further.

Where have I said footballers don't have to be/are not fit?
In my lifetime I have persued three sports, football, tae-kwon-do and cycling I can honestly say to compete at a good level in any of the sports requires decent standards of fitness. Of the three sports though (which really are totally incomparable) football is the one that requires the least amount of dedication and fitness, but IMHO is the most enjoyable of the three.

I enjoy cycling, I enjoy football it's not a case of either or, variety is the spice of life. :D

  • Is it that bad, not liking football? we need them to win all games, to boost the country, giant mancp very negative, that sort of response will have all the footy fans not wanting Team Sky to do nothing in any race! As a level 4 referee you have to be fit to keep up with the level of footballers have. And cycling is a great help for me. i would like any home country to win everything,

    ENGLAND FOR WORLD CUP!
TEAM SKY WINNERS OF TOUR DE FRANCE!
OVERALL WINNER OF TOUR ANY TEAM SKY RIDER!

    Enjoy the moment.

How much longer does this World Cup crap last??
Sick to death of every other topic on this board being soccer related tbh. We're road cyclists dammit...act it. Get out and ride!!
There has to be a board for "St George flag waving I've only got a 3"" d1ck so I'll stick a flag on my car" football supporters elsewhere on the internet other than on these cycling forums.
Yes I know it's Cakestop and it's off topic ....but gimme a f00kin break will ya

and you are actually completely wrong:-

    http://www.sportengland.org/research/ac ... sults.aspx

check out the sports participation document there are MORE cyclists than footballers in the UK 8.5% as opposed to 7.6%, I bet of those 8.6% barely any watch cycling grand tours otherwise viewing figures would be 5.75M !!
  • Personally, I'm not interested in football in the slightest, but each to their own.
Most people I know aren't interested in cycling.

The thing that get's on my wick is that as an English male I am expected/assumed to be a footy fan... :-)

It's great to see people getting enthusiastic and passionate about it though.

If I ever do change my mind, I'm married to a Brazilian, so I have a tenuous excuse to support a proper football team :-)

True talent? As much as I love cycling it can't claim that title until its doping reputation is dealt with. I acknowledge football has its cheating issues too....
