football is soooooooooooo boring.....you can do it, gradually move away from the TV...go, get outdoors and do something less boring instead!!!!! ii like bike0 -
Looking forward to it - it does have a rather 'disorganised' feel to it this time (our team build-up/prep).0

I am now bothered. After getting brazil in the Smashing soccerballs sweepstake, with a very generous prizefund at stake, I am now bothered.0

I'd rather jam a cactus up my ar$e than suffer the World Cup.
All the suddenly-appearing fake football fans, the fake emotion, the fake 'patriotism', makes me want to puke.
And don't get me started on the feckin' Eng-ger-land flags on the cars. What a bunch of jingoistic cockmastery.
In summary: I can live without it.Litespeed Tuscany, Hope/Open Pro, Ultegra, pulling an Extrawheel trailer, often as not.

Cycling Fact in the UK
1) Very small % of the nation are Cyclists / Into Cycling.
2) 95% who are into cycling watch the Classics & the Grand Tours etc
3) 95% of Cyclists actually cycle, train very hard, dedicate themselves - in all climatic conditions, they refuse lots of social outings due to the hobbie they love...basically Cyclists truly dedicate themselves?...all other cyclists I know do anyway?
4) Guys well into there 60's still enjoy serious challenges on the bike.
World Cycling Fact - Pro Cyclists are some of the greatest atheletes the world has ever seen, training regimes are almost inhumane, the salaries are extremely low with regards to many other 'sports'.
Football Facts in the UK
1) The vast majority of the nation are into 'Football'
2) 100% of 'guys into football' love watching Football.
3) 95% of 'guys into football' haven't kicked a ball since there school days.
4) The other 5% play a game of 5's once a week (if they can muster 10 guys from an entire factory floor)
5) No guys over 30 ever play a 90min game of a 11's?
Why is it that the most popular sport in the UK has a 100% spectator support with only a tiny proportion actually playing the beloved game?
Pro Football fact - Some of the most overrated, overpaid Sports stars in the world with almost Movie star lifesyles?
I am being utterly truthful in what I have observed living 41 years in this country so far...these are just facts.
But I will probably watch a few games....I do love watching Brasil...they are just so different...0 -

I'm with Jim McDonnel on this one. I'll be doing everything in my power and more to avoid any aspect of the World Cup. I used to be a big football fan but the money, over paid primadonnas, cheating, hype, racisim, homophobia, moronic fans, extortionate ticket prices to name but a few things have long soured any affection for the game. I'll be out enjoying a Thai meal on Saturday night. Might have the restaurant to ourselves!0 -

No Im not comparing cycling diehards...just everyone I know who is into cycling...and most football watchers I know are diehard...or they call themselves that anyway and spend £100's on ther football every month?
And I really dont think there are many more guys playing football than cycling every weekend...not from age 20-60 anyway....On the bike in Central scotland I see around 40 cyclists a day at the weekend...I hardly see anyone playing football apart from the small pub games now and again (usually around 18-19 year olds) and considering that football guys outnumber cycling guys by around 99 fold my data is not flawed.0 -
theres only about 100 people in central scotland
we have these thing called leagues with many teams with many players in places called cities

Have a look in the sports pages of your local newspaper - see just how many local football leagues there are even in a small town, remember that most of these teams will have about 15-20 players at least.
Also don't forget that football is a much more difficult game to play from about the mid-30s onwards - the constant changes in pace, physical contact etc. mean that it really is a young man's game in the way that cycling isn't.0 -

Thierry Henry on now...
If those Irish lads seen in SA get hold of him, and stick their home-made "equipment" up his butt, then I think we'll see some VA-VA-VOOM!!!0 -

I enjoy cycling and football and I see no point in comparing the two sports and the people who persue them respectively.
I know there is no way an alcoholic could achieve anything in cycling never mind play at international level, as footballers have done.
I don't hold with the mega dosh salaries of the premiership prima-donnas, but tomorrow I'll be cheering England on like a nutter, cos I love to see England win, whatever the sport.
As much as I enjoy cycling, I recall a conversation I had with a friend some 20years ago in which I said "Whatever sport you take up when you hang your boots up, it'll only be a substitute for football". If it were possible I'd have played football until I was 100, unfortunately football is a young mans game.Tail end Charlie

Maybe in your part of the world but were I live there are plenty more active footballer's. 40 cyclists a day at the weekend?? I played saturdays (for a club with 3 full teams) and sundays for over a decade and would often play at parks where there were 6-7 games on the go at once. The local sunday leagues have nine divisions of 12 teams each. You are using a sparsely poplulated area as evidence for the entire country :?0 -
Although I don't think Richyboys figures are valid, sports like cycling especially have an extremely high ratio of spectation/participation. You'd be hard pressed to find someone who watches cycling who doesn't cycle, or someone who cycles to not watch the Tour as a loose example. It's pretty much the same with any niche sport I guess."A cyclist has nothing to lose but his chain"

The ironic thing about football compared to cycling is due to the very different natures of the two sports and the skills/fitness required.
IMHO, to be a top class cyclist requires more fitness, but however, can be enjoyed at a lot lower level until you're 90 or whatever. Footie on the other hand requires less fitness in some respects but you're very fortunate if you can carry on playing beyond forty due to the nature of the sport.Tail end Charlie

I haven't been to a football match in years, haven't played since I left school, cycling and rugby being my sports, now I am older just cycling, I have some sympathy with Richyboys comments, I worked with a bloke who was a football "fan" but had never been to a match. I will be watching England, we expats have sorted out a big screen and have hired a bar, job done0

I'm just wondering whether you see 40 cyclists a day when it's the football season. There's a lot more cyclists around in the warmer weather. Try comparing the figures on a wet, windy winter's Sunday morning.0 -
Hopefully I won't catch one minute of one game.
Hopefully England will get knocked out very early then this ridiculous england-mania chav display will cease once we have no hope of winning.
I really should go away on holiday at this time of year every four years. Utter rubbish!! Roll on Le Tour!!!!!!!!!0
