I loved it. One of the view big dollar films which was a proper adult drama, as opposed to teenage stuff with enough drugs sex and violence to warrant an 18 certificate.

Not a fan of romantic dramas, but it really got the hook in me. Excellent.

Me too. I loved it, they were so trapped.

    :lol::lol::lol::lol::lol: (I think)

Nope, mean it, like Rick Chasey paraphrased from Apocalypse Now, it really got the hook in me. The part where they argue at the end of a trip, the music kicks in and shows them as young men and Jake Gyllenhal is almost asleep standing up, Heath ledger holds him and the camera pans back is so emotional. They really loved each other and wer completely hemmed in by circumstance, very moving.

I've argued with DCMlite about some things, but he's spot on here. One of the most sensitive, realistic mainstream films for years.

+1 for Fargo, Deliverance and Where Eagles Dare.... I'd forgotten about those classics!

... I don't understand how people can chose Snatch over Lock Stock &2SB, or Aliens over Alien.... that's like picking Phant*m Menace over The Empire Strikes Back innit!

How can you not love a movie with the two greatest lines in movie history.
"You're gonna look pretty funny trying to eat corn on the cob with no f**kin teeth."
"How much for the women, I want to buy your women?"

Oh yeah. I forgot about them hilarious lines. How could I forget them. I had to be taken into hospital to have my sides stitched back-up and have 5 pints of blood given.

    +1

I bought a copy recently and watched it dfor first time in 20 years. bits made me laugh but it's Waaaaay to long and most of the humour is squeezed out of it long before the scenes end. I agve it away to a friend. May watch it in 20 years time if I have nothing better to do that day.

I've got two more films though - 'Best In Show' and 'A Mighty Wind' - both hilarious - that's how to do comedy!

Defo, I have the box set with Waiting for Guffman too which is my fave.

Fred Willard is one of my favourite comedy actors. Genius!

    It is a classic!

The final performance is the tops.

There's one bit though with Fred Willard that, the first time I saw it, caused me literally to cry laughing...

    I won't spoil it...

Willard is a genius of comic timing.

"I don't think I could ever get used to being poked and prodded like that. I told my proctologist one time, "Why don't you take me out to dinner and a movie sometime?"

    Check him out in anchorman

"I have no idea where he would have gotten ahold of German pornography. But you and I are mature adults; we've both seen our share of pornographic materials. Oh, you never have? Of course you haven't, how stupid of me. Neither have I. I was just speaking in generalities. Right. I'll stop by the school a little later, Sister Margaret. Bye."

I can't believe nobody has mentioned the following:

    Ferris Bueller's Day Off
    The Godfather
    Made In America

    My others would be:

    The Deerhunter
    Apocalypse Now

    I considered, but decided against:

    Deliverance
    Trainspotting
    Seabiscuit
    Saw
    Alien
    Jarhead
    The Hurt Locker
    Rogue Trader

And there are so many other great films....... but the 5 I've chosen are the ones I would recommend to an alien supposing they understand English

5 more that I'm partial to.

    Munich
    The Terminator (original, 1984)
    Aliens
    A Walk on the Moon
    Love Actually
  • I've actually found this quite difficult. It's not five films I like, but five I'd recommend. That rules out quite a few films I love but are real love it or hate it films like Darkstar.

    Anyway here goes.

    1. Anything (and I mean anything) by Hayao Miyazaki. I'd probably pick Howl's Moving Castle if I had to pick one.

    2. Les Triplettes de Belleville (Belleville Rendezvous) - my own favourite "cycling" film.

    3. The Music Box - two men, a flight of steps and a piano, 30 minutes of absolute genius.

    4. Blade Runner - a few people have picked this and I really can't argue.

    5. Young Frankenstein - one of the few films that makes me cry.
Who you gonna believe? Me or your own eyes?

    Hallelujah that man.

And Planes, Trains and bloody Automobiles! I suffered three years at uni with my "friends" continually raving about that film and quoting "those aren't pillows!" over and over and over and over and over...

    IT'S NOT F***ING FUNNY! IT'S A PIECE OF OVER-RATED TORTOISE SH*T!
