Not sure if my 1 break should really count as I put 5" forks on a Kona Lava Dome when I was a stupid kid, so completely user error. Have also not included the spesh Fatboy BMX that ended up sideways on a grind attempt and went downtube first into a concrete bollard with all my weight behind it...

I did bend one of those but I'm not counting it, it was my first bike, a raleigh marauder, and it had one of those huge mech protector things that cleverly protected your dropouts and mech by bending your entire rear triangle instead. So don't think that counts.

Other'n that I had 2 frames, a Carrera Kraken and a GT Idrive which were both run with 10mm "too much" fork without any issues, and rode better for it, and my Scandal was ridden a bit beyond its design limits also without issues. And Hemlocks have a wee bit of a rep for going wrong, mine is flawless so far though.

Ooh, which one was it? I wanted the white Marauder when I was younger, it seemed rare compared to the blue one. Sadly my parents did me a favour and got the higher specced, but amazingly garish Lizard. :)

Still alive today, but a bit small I think :(

Erm, I've had about 7 frames, My old Saracen aluminium snapped in half whilst dropping of some stairs, and I snapped a swingarm on my original wolf ridge in a really bad crash that left me concussed, and the bike quite a long way down a ravine.

So, what does that mean? they're hardly a "snapped randomly" incident. That's like complaining that the build quality on your car isn't very good because it broke when you crashed into a wall.

Hmm, I am not sure. Frames are guaranteed to be free from defects for a set period. If they break outside that, then it has come to the end of its life. Is one way of looking at it lol. If my alu Zaskar broke tommorow, I would be peed off for sure, but 14 years on I wouldn't count it as some random failure.

Maybe add another number for frames outside warranty period?

If you think it was abuse that killed it rather than an unreasonable failure, then it's not a failure.

Ok then, no they probably shouldn't

Let's keep it quite simple though. We can have stories of failures/abuse etc, but they can't really be quantified. I'm just trying to get a rough idea of the number of frame failures amongst 'serious' MTBers.

The official rate may be 1%/5%/10% but if 50% of those bikes are only ever ridden along the towpaths, and another 20% are abandoned in a shed after 3 weeks, is that really a true reflection of frame quality?

How many people will have 'out of warranty' failures? I don't think it'll be a huge proportion, especially when you consider we're currently at about 16% of frames failing.

The white ones were the Index model, 18 speed with an SIS rear thumbie instead of the 15-speed on the blue one. Already I had a taste for pointless expensive upgrades
