Have you ever broken a frame? If not, answer anyway!

Following on from another thread, let's try to find out how many broken frames us Bikeradar-ers have had.

Now it won't be perfect because it won't take account of the length of ownership, but I reckon if we keep it in a standard format and just add your own numbers into the original quote and then if we only get 3 responses I'll add them up, if we get lots they can go into a spreadsheet!
So, use the format....
Username*Number of frames owned*Number of random failures*Number of known issue failures
So quote this post, remove everything outside the [code] tags and add your own numbers on a new line.

So if you had 4 'proper' bikes:
-one was a Boardman that randomly snapped and so was replaced (2 frames in total),
-one was a Commencal that snapped at the chainstay (known issue) and was replaced (2 frames)
-one was a Carbon Zaskar that failed due to a known problem and was never replaced (1 frame) and
-one was a Spesh that was fine (1 frame), your post would look like:
User*6*1*2

So, mine is...
Username*No of frames*No of random failures*No of known issue failures

Bails87*2*0*0

2 'proper' bikes owned, and no failures.

    03 Orange Patriot - Broke.
02 Orange 222 - I got it recently..looked like it had been ridden for a year..

aside from telling us you broke a bike, how? what style of riding. Riding XC never broken a frame. But then I have never owned a super light frame, nor am I a 6.6ft 15st monster. Noticed quite a few tall guys who have owned carbon frames have broken them.
  • FinbarSaunders*11*3*0

My first frame failure was a crash when a pedestrian ran into the side of me and the frame cracked at the seat stay. That was back in the '80s and I just had it repaired.

The second was a second-hand low-profile time trail bike I bought, late 80's. It was probably neglect on the part of the previous owner (and me). I just had it fixed as well. I sold that bike to a friend back in '98 and he still has it in his shed and still rides it occasionally so it wasn't totally neglected.

The third was a hairline crack in a weld at the top of the seat tube/top tube of a Ti frame. As it came with a lifetime warranty I took it back to the bike shop and the frame was replaced.

I don't know if any of these were known issues.

I'm assuming you meant all bikes owned and not just mountain bikes? If it is just MTBs change that to FinbarSaunders*1*0*0

I'd assume there is a degree of common sense involved, i.e. frames broken while being used appropriately- not freeriding on a scott scale! I imagine that isn't the sort of thing bails is looking for. (edit- missing some words!)

Anyhoo, I had a pinnacle hardtail which had some issues with the join between the carbon and alloy bits of the seatstays...

8 breaks, out of 43 frames so far. Very biased spread of people, but interestingly 18% roughly ;)

Good point, but it's probably a bit too difficult to start inculding all that detail. If you want to do the legwork and find a way of quantifying it all then be my guest

I was hesitant on Joshtp's as he said he rode into a tree? :P Didn't really strike me as being a failure on the frames behalf.

Hmm fair point. Next person to post can put him at 5*0*0 when they quote the code then.

Are we going to need a judging panel to assess if a failure was acceptable?

Added the missus to sway the balance back to reality a bit. It's still a lot, I'm not sold for an instant on the "1%" estimates. I think they'll be very selective on what they count in that figure, much like police crime figures :P

Catch less criminals = less arrests = lower crime rate, hurrah!

First failure was on an old steel townsend, an old but proper steel mountainbike, bent the frame doing a 1' drop to flat. Second was a carrera vulcan that I bent the forks on doing a slightly bigger drop.

broken bike Orange Patriot, coil shock.
how did it break...good question.. that bike got ridden at places like glentress for trail stuff, inner and fort william for dh stuff and over several munros for big day out stuff.

all of which are well within the guidelines for that frame, which was an 18" frame...i.e. wasn't too small for my size and weight etc.

it was an 03 frame...maybe fatigue in the weld? anyhow...orange were really good about it...basically got offered any frame that they had in for a decent discount....but had already acquired the 222, so went for a 2010 crush instead.
