Zo, you av NOT given zis groupen ze respect dey deserve...
Zo, you vill all be taken outzide and... shotten !!!
They didn't do a lot in the 80s though did they? Or the 90s. or at all since the 70s really.
Mainly re-issued their original stuff in other languages I believe. I always think of The Model as an 80's hit but original was apparently 78 :?0 -

Errrr....xcuse me? I got into Springsteen when I was 17, and all my Bruce fan friends got into him waaaaay before middle age. Youngsters are still discovering the man's back catalogue.
By the way, have you seen this? http://www.uncut.co.uk/magazine/0 -

Anyone heard LCD Soundsystems new album? Can hear loads of influences in there. Bowie, Talking Heads, OMD, Human League, Blancmange, Kraftwerk, The Icicle Works. Class album if you're into those kinda bands."A cyclist has nothing to lose but his chain"

Can't believe that I've only just caught this thread.......despite some of the fashion crimes, the music was awesome....!!
I mean, no decade passes without its clunkers, one hit wonders etc. (Seven tears by the Goombay dance band anyone? No? well how about agadoo by black lace?)...and manufactured music/boybands etc exist in different forms too...but what a decade for diversity and just some cracking pop tunes. Nobody likes everything, but tell me you can't find something to love from the following -
Started off with the back end of disco and all the post-punk stuff - police, blondie. Can't remember if there was still enough "proper" 70s style rock around, to be contrasted with the long coat/big hair/flying axe power ballad rockers, but heavy mettle evolved. Remember when G N'R seemed to rule the world?
R&B always leaves its influences - most obviously, plenty of soul around if that's your bag. Luther Vandross. Whitney Houston could do no wrong for a while (from a chart point of view). Maybe Tina Turners comeback fits here?
Ska/two tone. specials, the selector, the beat, and of course Madness.
The new romantics and synth based stuff (it's where half my musical heart lies -the 'League, depeche mode, OMD, Eurythmics,Yazoo Alphaville, Soft Cell, New Order, Pet Shop Boys, Heaven 17, Japan, Eurythmics, Ultravox).
Remember the other, less synthy, side of the new romantics - spandeau/duran rivalry, maybe with ABC, wham and culture club thrown in? How do Frankie goes to hollywood fit?
Although it was born in the 70s, the 80s saw the mainstreaming of rap/hip hop(the other half of my heart - sugar hill gang, grandmaster flash, NWA, Public enemy, de la soul - even beastie boys!) Much better when it was either political statement or pure party music, rather than bling, 'hos and b1tches . (not that I don't possess a bit of nas, kanye etc.)
House music - better in the clubs. Most of the crossover stuff that found its way into the charts e.g. MARRS - pump up the volume, wasn't that hot (Although remember the epic performance by daryl pandy on TOTP wiggling around like a man possessed and then falling to the floor to "love can't turn around")
just in case you forgot
Indy bands and Madchester. Smiths, Happy Mondays, Stone roses...
A few individuals or songwriters enduring (bowie, costello, bragg, joe jackson).
Not my cup of tea, but no denying the phenomenon of Springsteen.
Likewise, whether you like/rate them or not, others who don't fit genres, but are so huge they are just - themselves. Michael Jackson. Madonna, Prince.
Also, whimsical female singer songwriters (Kate Bush early, Suzanne vega late) were an interesting change, rather than ten a penny (can't watch an ad on telly these days without being accompanied by a folorn female voice warbling in a folky style about some sh1te or other).
confessions: I actually liked simply red's first (quite jazzy) album, before he became just a crime against gingerhood. I don't hate bananarama. I quite liked haircut one hundred, and - here's the real shame - Curiosity killed the cat.
Whilst there was clearly some rubbish too, in terms of enduring, best selling acts, on behalf of the 80s I apologise for Phil Collins, Bryan Adams and Shakin Stevens. Also, I apologise for "twisting by the pool" and "money for nothing" by Dire straits. Compared to the bluesy sounds of their earlier albums, which I loved, this commercial tosh was just an abomination.
Only going to list some of my faves, as many already mentioned (and I'd be here all day) - but glad to see slightly less remembered talk talk, lloyd cole, tears for fears and even the Thomson twins getting some love. Also I was a massive level 42 fan too, a band that didn't seem to fit into an obvious category (don't bother replying with categories like crap, rubbish sh1te etc.... Probably just a fixation on Mark Kings bass playing.
"kings of the wild frontier": by adam and the ants needs a mention - both as a single and album
"blue monday" - new order.
"white lines" - grandmaster flash & melle mel
"pale shelter" tears for fears ( i prefer it to more popular "mad world'.)
"push it" salt 'n' peppa
"vienna" ultravox (robbed from no 1 spot by - choke - "shaddap your face"
Also, UB40 may now be best known for "reggae lite" dross like red, red, wine. but "signing off" was a cracking album.
It's no coincidence that my Karaoke staples are "tainted love" "love action" and "the look of love". (lexicon of love: best. pure. pop. album. ever.)
Been inspired to go to my music collection and pick at random until I hit a 80s cd.
result: Pauls boutique by beastie boys.
OMG, just realised that this post has become my very own shameless eighties nostalgia fest!!!! (am I allowed to use OMG in a thread about the eighties [/url]0 -

I've only had a quick blast through the album, but there probably is some in there somewhere. Pretty much every recent album that has any kind of electronica on it seems to take something from Number One Song in Heaven."A cyclist has nothing to lose but his chain"

And Peter and Sophie Johnston - weren't they great?
Oh - and the sundays - saw them on every tour from when they started - 1988?0 -
