Apparently Sastre had lots of bike trouble after the crash, and wasn't able to get a new one. Then he blew up, 8km from the finish. Can't come into a GT that short of racing miles.
Basso? I can't understand how he got involved with the crash, a full 20 seconds after it happened. Really odd.

An absolutely amazing stage... havent seen as exciting a stage in a GT in a very long time...
Evans is superb and really showing that he is the best World Champ in many many years...

Verdict: Evans - incredible, Vino the dark threat is still present... Nibali was unlucky and ended up losing more time by trying to keep that oaf Basso in touch... Nibali could probably have saved another 30 seconds or more without Basso.

Sastre - the big loser - what the hell was he doing?

    Overrated: Basso, Wiggans, Sastre
I keep wondering about the forum talk regarding Basso and Sastre, when neither of them have shown anything resembling anything approaching form for a very long time !!
.. who said that, internet forum people ?

So, between them last year they had 3 grand tour podiums. Sastre a couple of stage wins?

Basso won Trentino last year, top 5'd (I think) this year.

eh? Two stages of the 2009 Giro ain't winning?

Also wasn't Basso part of the Liquigas team that won stage 4? Goes down on his palmares.

    Great stage.

Honestly, it seemed like the only contenders are Vino and Evans. Even they didn't seem that well though. Nice one for Vino attacking, but his attack lacked explosiveness (if he plans to drop Evans anyways). Also, nice one for Evans winning the stage but I don't think it means he's the only one with legs for the GC.

The bad things: Sastre: back to stage wins I guess. I never really believed he was a real contender but he lost it pretty fast. Wiggins: was expecting more of him. A bit disappointed. Liquigas: Basso was clearly burnt. He couldn't keep up at all with Nibali, and I honestly think if Basso was like this today, the team should have changed strategy since he's not going anywhere like this.

Let's see how it all goes tomorrow.

sheeeeet that was close... had a 20 spot on Cunego to win at 19-1... would have brought in a tidy little sum for the day. £380 !!! That dog loving Aussie weirdo is not welcome in my house today!

Pain is temporary. It may last a minute, or an hour, or a day, or a year, but eventually it will subside and something else will take its place. If I quit, however, it lasts forever.

I think you needed to look at the non-gravel parts of the course, especially uphill where it looked like Basso was stronger. He did look like a bag on spanners on the gravel though.

Nibs says he's taken a bit of a pounding in his crash so he might be pretty stiff tomorrow.

Looking forward to tomorrow - a 22km uphill finish.

Oh dear, something tells me our favourite LA fan was too busy California wet dreamin', to have bothered watching a triffling Giro stage.

Nice to read that carlos is still upbeat. Hopefully, the Leakygas boys will feel the same.
Cuddles needs Vino to stay in contention, or he could have difficulty marking their dual threat, come week 3........

    Mr Basso sez

"I got going again pretty quickly after the crash, but it would have been hard to catch the leaders on my own, so I waited for my teammates. We chased together but the dirt road sections didn't help us and the leaders were going hard."

"I'm honestly not too bothered by the time that I've lost, just like I didn't get carried way when he gained time. There's still a long way to go in this Giro."

Basso looked horrible. Couldn't believe that the Nibs waited.

Wow, Vino and Basso look like two very different riders. Did Basso train when he was suspended? VIno said he did. That must be the difference.

    Xavier Tondo wins tomorrow.

Taped it as I watched so will add to the pile to keep! Got 5 riders in my Cycling Fever team too!! While my PTP pick came in 24 mins down and counting. Haha,
Liked Cadel shaking paws with that nameless horror they get given for the stage win (mind you it isn't as fearsome as the one they got on the Vuelta a few years ago).
C'mon Sastre - read Pozzato's blog on Cycling news and he said Carlos would suffer - mind you so did he.

Fantastic viewing today, the Giro has been great so far.

Some great rides today, obviously the leading men were great but also enjoyed the efforts of Nibali, Basso and Scarponi just clawing their way to the finishand keeping in touch.

Who, Evans? He could take it tomorrow if Vino doesn't go well. The way Vino races, he has the potential to blow up at any time.

Forgot to say congratulations to Millar for finishing so well. He really is an admirable rider.

    In his own words:
"I actually enjoy it when it's like this. I think this is what racing is all about. In a way, the worse the conditions, the better I seem to go. In the end it was just mano-a-mano and it was actually a lot of fun."

In other news, Sky's swift wins stage 2 of Picardie and take the lead going into tomorrow's last stage.

Astarloza announces his formal suspension and that he is going to appeal for having done nothing wrong....

Nibali looked stronger on the gravel going uphill, but on the gravel level/downhill stretches his bike-handling wasn't anything as good as Basso's or that of the non-Liquigas rider with them for a while (didn't catch name).

I had the impression Basso waited for Nibali, even if on the uphill gravel stretches Nibali was more determined or stronger.
Basso looked fairly relaxed coming in at the end, so maybe his confidence (as in the quote you posted) was pretty accurate and it would be premature to write him off just yet (as some others seem to have done).

An epic stage. Great respect for all the riders, grinding their way over the strada sludge and up some of those inclines.
Every one of them was a winner today.
It will be remembered on forums for many years.

+1 its up there with that 2005 stage over the Finestre.

All of them should look back on this stage with pride. They'll be thankful for it in years to come.
