It felt SO good today breezing past a guy on a carbon fiber bike with all the fancy kit on - and there was me, plain t-shirt and shorts- No clipless pedals, no fancy kit, no carbon frame.... Just a " shitty " aluminium Trek 1.2, a good heart and the legs to match! No point in having the kit unless you can do it justice :)
There are times I could have been the 'guy on a carbon fiber bike'. Oh how I laughed when some numpty rode past thinking he was proving something when I was in the process of warming down after a hard 4 hour training ride.

As a friend of mine is keen on saying 'When I want to race, I will enter one'. Good advice which if followed would put an end a lot of pointless 'half-wheeling' contests. It would also introduce the sort of people who think that riding past someone else 'proves' something to what 'racing' actually entails.

I bet that before he got his current 'shitty' Trek (aren't they all?) Paul was one of those who will zoom past a 'proper' cyclist (the sort of people Paul claims he despises) and will then either turn off 50 yards down they road before they collapse from the effort or stop in order to look at their bike.

I was overtaken yesterday by a mountainbiker whilst I was out on my racing bike. I was under coach's instructions to do nothing more than lvl2. He indeed panted past me and turned off 250yds later into a cul de sac.

Most of it is a load of crap and exactly why I hate "cyclists".

Too much self importance and self righteousness around being a "cyclist", I hate that. Does my head in, and this post just typifies the whole thing. What's wrong with just wanting to ride a bike, eh?

Also, just to be a cnut about it, should this be in the "Pro Race" forum?

    It's

Problem is, a lot of people here abide by it - and it's been written from truths, so not a joke.

    Which is the problem!

No they don't you just seem to have had a sense of humour bypass. Nice to know I'm a snob for buying the best bike I could afford, I'm sure if our paths cross you'll be going all out to overtake me even if I'm just on a commute. If you want to demonstrate how much better you are on your 1.2 then get a race licence, plenty of carbon riding, lycra wearing snobs out there to teach a lesson Mr Chip on Shoulder

Thanks very much for ruining my day Nap. I've based all of my management techniques on David Brent's training DVDs.

The accepted response is to shout "is that all you've got" at them as they turn off.

it's a hard life if you don't weaken.

See your posts get the the heart of my remarks about the snobbery. You both say you were passed by people on crap bikes, but have to justify it with remarks about trainer advice or at the end of a 4 hour ride. So what if they thought they were the business, why do you care? Why do you say they're idiots for thinking they're cleaver, but then offer justification of why they were able to do it. Bernie you love introducing psychobabble into your posts, so tell the head-twist stuff about why when you were passed you had to make the point that it was warm down after a 4 hour ride, I infer from that that you say it could never happen if you were actually 'riding'

If you can afford to drop £6K on a super bike and a Sky kit why do you have to be a good cyclist, why can't you just be someone that can afford it and wants to?

Yes, not easy on the eyes those things.

I was simply pointing out the absurdity of Paul Cuthbert's suggestion that him passing another cyclist on a carbon fibre bike showed that the rider did not have the legs to 'do it justice'.

and I was pointing out that in your example you had to make clear it was only possible as you were warming down at the end of a 4 hour ride. Because of course he'd have not got near you otherwise ;)

He may have. But I was explaining a genuine situation from yesterday. I had no qualms about riding slowly and being overtaken and there is a very high possibility that the guy on the MTB thought nothing of it either. It may be that if the guy was on a road bike he would be faster than me but...
paulcuthbert's inverted snobbery is as bad as those that look down on others.

Have you ever thought of racing?

If you feel sooo good when you pass one bloke (albeit warming down), think how good you'll feel when you go screaming past a whole bunch!!!

No, that was not the point I was making at all. Fact is that all over the world there are people downing beers and eating pies who have never even ridden a bike but nonetheless have the physiology to be a Tour winner. However, he only way anyone has ever proved anything about their racing ability is by actually entering a race. This applies to all the half-wheelers and 'winter warriors' out there as well.

Ps. This brings to mind a chat I had with an old associate of mine, Peter Stevenson of Northallerton who turned pro for 7 Eleven and last I heard was still living in Belgium. We were all schoolboys at the time and staying at York Rally (1975 if I recall correctly). Anyhow it was quite common back then for school sports days to include bike races, with my own school having its own grass track championship. Pete told us that they did something similar at his school but he never entered as he had a vision of him turning up on his race bike and being beaten by some kid on a chopper!

OK I'll make this simple for you as you are plainly a bit of a tool and envious of anyone who has a more expensive bike than you. If you ride for fun that's fine, surely that's what we all do? However, if you are going to boast about how you overtook a rider on a more expensive bike (note, I said more expensive not better as I really do rate the Trek 1.2!) etc. and then say that it was fun then maybe you need to consider the what ifs. OK, he may have been riding as hard as he could in which case good for you but there's only one way you can prove for sure that you are better than him despite your bikes and that would be in a proper race when he realises he's taking part otherwise just savour the moment but don't boast about it on a cycling forum. Also, that bike may have cost him a smaller part of his disposable income thatn the Trek cost you, what gives you the right to be judgmental and call him a snob?

If the cost of a bike is so irrelevant why did you by a £600+ bike when you could have got a Carrera Virtuoso or Boardman Comp for less? I've just switched to a carbon bike from an 18 year old 653 frame with down tube 7 speed gears and 36 spoke wheels which I bought new having previously only owned and raced second hand bikes and on which I completed 6 years of racing and have probably covered in excess of 40,000 miles. Once you've done the same on your Trek feel free to lecture me on bike snobbery.

Anyway, this is way off pro cycling talk so don't know why the thread is even in this section unless it's because all those pros are snobs for riding such expensive bikes and wearing lycra. I'm off out for a ride in my lycra on my carbon bling - never know, might catch a snob riding a Parlee with Di2 and Zip deep rims to overcome my insecurities

I think we know the answer to that one, given that Paul's personal 'hero' ( a well-known doper, bully, Francophobe and possibly borderline sociopath) is also well known for riding a Trek.

    Sorry Bernie. You lose

My Dad (my personal hero- wasn't aware he was any of those things, but obv. you know him better than I do...) bought me a Trek for a combined birthday/christmas present, because he rides a 2006 Trek 1200 and hasn't had a problem with it. I'm a simple person and asked for no birthday presents this April because I still think the £575 bike from last year was too much and is enough to last all my birthdays and christmases...

It made sense to stick with a Trek 1.2 when I could get it for £425 from the LBS I like when my first one got stolen in October (which was, by the way, the worst day of my life) since I loved the first one so much. I put a deposit down (spending £50 was hard for me) and then saved up for 2 months to pay the rest.

That's why cost is irrelevant. You did ask

I don't ask for anything, cos I'm not a spoilt brat (I can tell you were as a kid).

My Mum asked me in October if there was anything I wanted or needed for christmas, and I said "No. Because I've got my bike, and that'll last me all my birthdays and christmases". Like I said, I'm a simple person and I don't need stuff or money - so sorry to disappoint again Bernie.

I feel real bad for letting you down so much today by repeatedly proving you wrong buddy! :(
