Best supermarket cereal bar?

In terms of carbohydrate vs fat content, has anyone checked these out? I have yet to find a gel that doesn't cause major intestinal eruptions, and making flapjacks is either not practical or thought of until it is too late, so a store of cereal bars seems a good option. However, there seem to be masses of different brands and road testing them all might be an obsession too far!

Geo Bars, or Nutrigrain Elevenses are my preference, but I mostly take just a pocket full of dates and an energy drink...0

The (new?) Soreen Go bars are my favourite at the moment. Not sure how the fat/carb content compares, but they're delicious. Chewy and moist unlike most cereal bars.More problems but still living....0

currently using the oatsosimple apple and blueberry bars, taste lovely without being sickly and usually on offer at asda for a quid a box0

Most supermarkets sell flapjack traybake. Cut into squares, wrap up and pop in pocket. Tropical Wholefoods bars get my vote but in their absence I'd go for Geobars or something like Eat Natural, Nak'd or maybe School Bars.
Aldi have packs of cereal bars, but their Racer (15p mini-Snickers) or a Cadbury's Fudge goes down well.
Edit: there is no 'best', just the one(s) you prefer.Aspire not to have more, but to be more.0 -
The last time i checked the cereal bar shelf in Morrisons, Nutri-Grain elevenses Raisin had the best carb-fat ratio.
They're great if you like the taste of them. You'll need some water with them though. They don't break up in your pocket either.0 -
Blackfriars flapjacks pack about 500 calories and are reasonably tasty (try the Bakewell Tart or Stem Ginger variants..). 70p a throw in Holland and Barret or on-line from the supplier directly. I alternate between these, Mule Bars or a big chunk of Morrisons iced fruit cake. Most of the other stuff I've tried is pretty poor.0

They are 2 for £1 at the moment as well.
Each 100g (they are a 110g bar) provides 462Kcal, 7g Protein, 57g carbohydrate & 22g Fat.
I'm not really sure this stacks up nutritionally but they work well for me and i have quite a sensitive stomach when it comes to a lot of 'sports specific' energy foods.0 -
I make my own flap jacks, honey, golden syprup, sugar ,oats, nuts, sultanas maybe a bit of dark choc mixed in....
I dont think you could get a cheaper type bar in the shops and you know whats in them!
You can also cut them up into sizes that you want...0 -
+1 on making your own, my missus made some oaty cheesy marmite bars (an adaption of the recipe in C+) last week as cycling food and they were superb and took about ten minutes to prepare (and about twenty minutes to cook).0

Aldi sell 100g blocks of flapjack for 39p each, plane, topped with chocolate and caramel, or chocolate. They contain around 60g of carbs each.
The sugard for flapjack is like 90p
Bag of oats is like 50p
Honey, is well.. expensive, I get tesco value, something like 45p for 300g
butter is like 80p.
But mine always goes bad.0 -

Last time I looked into this I think GeoBars (mixed berries and choc ones) seemed to offer the best stats in terms of carbs vs. fat content but they might not be widely available or the cheapest. That said, they will be cheaper than most "sports fuel" brands.0

No need for the bar, get some cereal and use the bag inside. I use
It's great. Just chuck a spoon in and you're good to go. It's not that dry either.

Personally I would look for lower fat content than 20%. And no trans fats , and some protein... but adding fats for taste /ease of eating is a 'cheap' way to make bars.. which is one of the reasons sports bars are more expensive - but they are tooexpensive nevertheless0

Am I missing something or is that just flapjack by another name for £1 a bar?More problems but still living....0 -
I've started making my own - was going to get a load of mule bars for Tour of Wessex but decided there was no way I was going to pay £30 for 24 bars. This recipe is great and serves me well on rides.

I usually make my own flapjacks
If I run out on the way round geobars are good, also like nut flavour tracker bars and nature valley granola bars0 -
No need for the bar, get some cereal and use the bag inside.
Is that with a rack and panniers on the back to store it
Good choice of brand though - I got two boxes of 6 Jordans cereal bars for £3 the other week and they bailed me out at the top of Jeffrey hill on our club ride as we headed towards Chipping Cafe - was seriously running low on energy at that point. If they're still on offer, get them.0 -
I've used mule bars the last couple of years for fellrunning: they're about the most palatable of the 'energy / performance bar' things. At least Hunza Nut, Mango Tango and Summer Pudding are alright - the Apple & cinnamon are bloody horrendous though.
On the supermarket oaty bar side of things, I reckon 'Elevenses' (the raisin ones) pack the most healthy carbs for your dosh and are quite tasty.
Malt loaf with butter (or peanut butter) works for me too ...0 -

I used to eat the cereal bars like Geo - but the nuttier ones in particular make me fart for Britain. I like flapjack too much to make my own. The megabite Mule bars are perfectROAD < Scott Foil HMX Di2, Volagi Liscio Di2, Jamis Renegade Elite Di2, Cube Reaction Race > ROUGH0

Tescos Fruit and Fibre cerial bars are pretty good and fairly cheap.
Like others have mentioned i make my own flapjack and it only takes about 30mins from start to finish, add habanero and orange zest to flavour.0 -
Tescos are doing Mule Bars - Summer Pudding - as a 3 for 2 offer at the moment. This is for a pack which comprises 3 x 40g bars (smaller than the standard bars). I think that works our fairly reasonably per gram.“You may think that; I couldn’t possibly comment!”

Good spot - will have to check this out - is that the Megabite size? No - I'm confused as they are 30g and the full-size ones are 67g I think. Sounds a bit like the multibuy crisp bags where the crisps are much smaller.ROAD < Scott Foil HMX Di2, Volagi Liscio Di2, Jamis Renegade Elite Di2, Cube Reaction Race > ROUGH0
