when folks are saying flat road do you carry spirit levels? i only have wrenches and a pump. :?
I do wonder how many of these figures would stand the normal speed record rules, i.e. could they turn round and do the same in the opposite direction?
If you then delete all rusty memories, exaggerations, wishful thinking and just plain lying, how thin a thread would this be?

I was watch the tour de france highlights the other night. They were talking about the fastest clocked on the flat was 75 kph or 46.6mph by someone in the 80's. I think its amazing that someone can get a bike up to that speed on the flat.

We're talking about fastest speed on a (roughly) level road at any point in time, not the land speed record.

I often hit mid-40s on a hill on the way to work, as it's a bit of a drop. Going back it's a bit of a climb that I fight my way up at about 7-8mph. The two roads are entirely different - different incline (up one way, down the other), surface differs from one side to the other, wind is different, approach is different. Just what point would be made by claiming an average of 26 mph on that hill? It's a meaningless number.

My contribution - 52mph for a good few hundred yards up the back end of a milk tanker along the A52 round Nottingham city centre some years ago, passing the Queen's Med. That was fun.
