I had no 'puter on but was on a flat 40mph section and cars weren't screaming past me, so at a guess I'd say I was going at 30 or so. Not bad for a fatty :)

    That's top!

I'm a newbie but starting to average around 23mph on a 10 mile commute. Ambition is to set a speed camera off? Possible? I'd love to get a speed ticket on a bike!

On my commute I always pass a 30mph speed camera at 35-40mph (it is a steep downhill bit and I am lardy)... I've never triggered the camera. Anyone got ideas why? Is it because I'm over on the LHS in the bike lane, or are bikes too small to be picked up?

I had one of them red bikes but I don't any more. Sad face.

Just started another thread about speeding tickets. 35-40! No way, you've got balls!

Are you not apprehensive travelling at that speed?

Well it's a very long straight downhill and the tarmac is smooth - especially on the cycle lane bit - I've only come close to a cropper once in all my commutes. As for big balls - you clearly haven't seen me after an hour in my cycling shorts!

Anyone know how fast Cippo or Petacchi could sprint back in the day?

(I guess by flat you mean flat road, not just flat. In which case, those guys who did the flying 200m this morning averaged a good 69kph for those 200m).

I averaged 28 mph for a 15 miles commute (with a back wind) years ago and was good for 30-35 of the flats over a short distance.
My fastest (on a cycle) is 55 mph in a decent in the Peaks, my fastest on the other bike was 165mph but that was with my right hand and not my legs.

My hybrid has done over 70mph!

It was in the back of my car at the time and I was on the motorway.

No but I have used the android stuff like MyTracks and sportypal for HTC Magic and they do a good job.

Phil you should have gone to 8)
You would be surprised how fast you'll go once the miles and hours build up. You'll hit 30+ for short sprints . As for descending confidence brings speed.

ive hit 34-35 mph on the flat on my hybrid with a 15-20mph tailwind, not bad on a flat barred bike but to get above that would take a lot more power than ive got, so think what power Mark Cavendish puts out to do about 43- 45mph on the flat in a sprint finish probably 3-4 times what i can muster

Fastest speed unassisted on the flat for me was 31mph according to my computer. It was only for a couple of 100 yards and it damn near killed me* coughs up lung* but there was no way I was letting my mate's 15 yr old daughter scalp me like that.

Hit 42.5mph yesterday on a section of road that was very slightly downhill. Insane tail wind. That said, I only got to about 12mph going the other way :(

Yes I use something called cyclemeter - downloaded it in Jan and found it to be top notch, records your rides well, allows you to store particular routes o you can "race" against them. Shows speed and climbs too. IMHO as good as entry level garmin offerings and cost £2.50.

Also now hitting app stores new and noteworthy/apple recommends (although dont know if thats a measure of quality or just a bung). Its made by these guys http://www.abvio.com/cyclemeter/

Not sure how fast I was going, on my job mountain bike, but I caught a kid on a 50cc scooter going cross country once...So must have been 20mph +

theres an old story i remember about a cop in a foot chase, bad guy jumps on a big old kawasaki ninja motobike and the cop grabs a push bike and gives chase and eventually catches the bugger! (obviously I have left out most of the narative!) not sure if it's just one of those tales everyone tells.

anyway back to the OP. my mate claims to have done 42mph on the flat......wont shut up about it either!

Hmm... the problem here is that everyone's fastest speed "on the flat" probably just means on the bit of road that is sloping downhill just not quite enough to register as a slope as far as they are concerned, which will vary according to individual perception and wishful thinking... And of course with tailwind!

I once did 45mph down a steep hill near my home in Warwickshire on my GT Hybrid with skinny tyres. Bl00dy scary. As for the flat i've had 25mph but it's far too heavy to get any decent speed out of it. Roll on next month when i get my first proper road bike. Hopefully that will make a difference.

I remember doing 64kph down the back straight of Dunsfold during a race - there may have been a bit of tailwind
