I heard the whole of Shear Heart Attack one evening last week, without the benefit of any music reproductive device other than my own brain singing it through for me. Weird. Good album though.

Anything fast and heavy but tended to make the cycling a "little aggressive" and put me in stupid (dangerous) situations needlessly. After a few too many close calls now just the wind/cars etc and find I'm a lot calmer at the end of it.

I like to listen to the birds singing, the gentle rustle of the wind in the trees, and the quiet drone of the bus engine as is closes up close behind me....

Can understand music for very quiet roads, or better stiff offroad, but I can't understand listening to music on main commutes. It just seems wrong to me.

+1 Seems silly to impair one of your senses when doing something as risky as cycle commuting. Each to their own though!

yeah lets not get into the whys etc just what you actually listen too

hmm loads of bands so here's some genres

    Metal
    Doom
    Sludge
    Rock/classic rock

nothing chilled out though as it makes you want to find a nice grass verge and lay down rather than overtaking everything you see

This morning it was Chutes Too Narrow by The Shins.

Can we leave the hackneyed - 'oh oh it's sooo dangerous' arguments alone please, it's dull, been done to death, and those of us that ride with music are adults and capable of making reasoned decisions with regards to our own safety on the road...

It's a fair point. I've been cycling with music a bit recently. I've concluded it is like cycling without a helmet or without hi-viz. All of those choices reduce your (ones) safety by a modest amount, none of them deserve to be seen as stupid of reckless.

I always wear a helmet and I've taken to wearing hi-viz more often. Perhaps that's compensating for the music

I don't like to cycle with music, I enjoy the silence and the outdoors-ness of cycling and find music mars the experience.

In the gym, however, I listen to lots of old skunk anansie, audioslave, aerosmith, deftones, korn, that type of thing. Rocky stuff. It spurs me on.

Today - "Something Else" by the Kinks - the greatest album made in 1967 (my first complete year on planet earth) - better than anything by the Beatles or the Stones during that period.

Good call but... I think Hendrix released Axis: Bold as Love at the end of 67. One of his best albums IMO

I'll have to remind myself - I'm sure I've heard it (my wife had a copy) but I don't have a copy and can barely remember it.

Maybe I should have stuck to best British record of 1967 - I also forgot about Dylan and the Velvet underground
