I had a little fun with a pair of fast motorbikes the other day - sweeping A roads for about 5 miles. They are VERY quick on the straight (obviously) but cannot get the power down nearly as early or grip as well round bends - it was surprisingly close and rather fun
Yeah, any luggage past a tooth-brush, some underwear and whatever small and un-breakabale I can fit into a small rucksack, which is then ratchet-strapped to the back of my bike can't be carried... (I attatch it to my bike, as if I come off, it will break my back if I'm wearing a rucksack)
And in the wet, round the bends, I can't go as fast as cars. In the dry though... 8)
Can't wait to get a car again... Weather protection, WARMTH, not being scared half-to-death on ice.......
Simple pleasures, that I took for granted, but now seem like ULTIMATE luxuriesBoo-yah mofo

Oh, but back on track....
Best sound: Car - a MASSIVE (7+litre, straight-through exhaust, massive carbs) petrol V8, with a rough, slow idle. Almost stalling. Not much sounds better... Awesome!
Bike: Again, a MASSIVE (1800cc+) Harley V-twin, straight pipes, accerating hard. Love it. So loud, you can feel it in your chest I know, I know... Harley's are crap bikes, and I'd NEVER own one, but they sound frickin' ace!
And oddly, a fire crackling away. Love that sound too 8)Boo-yah mofo

there's a guy that used to live up the road from me, has a coupl eof Toyota hilux's both with V8's, and straight through pipes, one is the normal run around and the other is blown, with the intake out the bonnet, refered to as the 'Animal' Stunning truck and the Noise! heard him a while back going up a two lane section close to home, he gave it a boot full and my word, that noise!! 8) 8) 8)
there's also a couple of old 50's chevy truck's up the other end of the village, big lumps in them. sound and Look the nuts! and very ocasionally there's a charger that cruises up and down the coast, with the all important internal organ rumbling noise! stops me dead just to watch and listen!!
brother has a v6 406, and thats just got a subtle growl, but give it a poke with the naughty stick and its awsome!Timmo.

It's all about the 'burble'...
Cakemobile = 3.0 Flat 6. Stainless cat-back custom built exhaust, inc sports cat. I Nice 'burble' at tickover, normal(ish) sound then until I hit 3,500rpm and then all hell's let loose.
But that sound pale's into insignificance compared to the Mk1 Capri my brother used to own. 3.0 with webber carbs. Those were the days.0 -

Timmo - my dad had a Ford P100 (Cortina shape) pickup. Smaller front wheel were the only clues to it's engine - a Rover V8 tuned to 400bhp...! It made a hell of a sound and went like stink - but snapped a propshaft at speed sending the whole thing about 4 feet into the air! But while it worked it would happily carry almost two tonnes (adjustable air suspension) in the morning and eat 911s in the afternoon!
Sadly my engine looks like a Power Rangers rocket pack with a large lump of plastic over the block. However a mate has just had his 335d dynoed (same age, similar mileage) at 311bhp. I reckon mine it likely to be similar.
Not bad for a soot chucking hearse0 -
My bike hauler is a 2002 Land Rover Discovery II ES 4.0L V8, I don't believe there's any replacement for displacement and I love the growl of the V8. Fuel consumption can vary from 18 - 25 MPG depending on how I drive and also what's on the roof (sometimes up to 4 bikes on Thule 591 racks, but usually two)
Sadly the do-goody tree huggers hold anyone with a 4x4 personaly responsible for global warming and planetary destruction.
So, in order to appease those who believe in this "man made global warming" hype I took it upon myself to invest in a planet friendly turboweasel for daily use and commuting
The day to day runaround is a 09 Golf GT-TDi 170. That can do 47-60MPG depending on how I drive. It's not a bad car but then again it's not exactly brilliant either and rates as one of the least comfortable vehicles I've owned.
The bonus features are factory fitted bluetootch, heated leather seats and the cherry on top is the iPod dock under the armrest.0 -

Shame then that your 2.0 Golf has almost the same power and torque as your 4.0 V8 yet is more than twice as good on fuel0 -

But you tell me which sounds better.... If he can afford a brand new Golf GT TDi, I doubt he's strapped for cash to put a bit o fuel in his Disco, when he needs to haul his bike / other stuff around....

Yup, but the Golf is cramped, not overly comfy and wouldn't carry me, 3 friends, our bikes and all our riding gear together.
Also, the Golf's turboweasel engine sounds agricultural. I can imagine VW's new TV advert where a farmer is looking at a tractor and the salesman starts the engine, looks at the farmer and says "Listen to that, it sounds just like a Golf TDi"..0 -

My loader at work has a 27 ltr V12 that scoffs 1100+ ltrs of fuel in a 11 hour shift (23-ish gallons/hour)
Next time the tree huggers try to lay on a guilt trip, point them in my direction0 -

Indeed but my point was that your comment wasn't really very accurate. The early Rover V8s put out 140bhp yet drank HUGE amounts of fuel - an average hatch can manage that with a tiny engine!
That LR V8 is a very lazy engine - yep it sounds great but for the mpg it does, the outputs are pretty lame and very much "old tech."
You can get far more frisky engines in bigger cars with much less capacity that happen to use much less fuel AND sound nice too.
The inlaws had a V8 Defender 110 for a while - often returned less than 20mpg...0 -
matt, thats the type of truck!! Awsoem things!!!
Raymond, thats spot on lol! If you close your eye's it sounds just like a golf hahaha!
you have to remember though, the americans hold the torch for largest engines with the least power lol! old 7litres with 150bhp! (a random example, may not be truely accurate but to give an idea!) nice!!Timmo.

When it's dry, and the tyres grip, the grin factor is about 6,000,000 However, I've already spotted my next ride - a BMW (Surf_Matt will approve :P)
