Opened my window tonight on the way home from work (yeah I didn't ride again  ) to get rid of the rain and realised i'd forgotten how nice the V6 sounds with a bit of right foot :D

Ahhh... decided i'm not getting rid of it now... the Golf I tried at the weekend was faaaar too boring!

Gotta go get the GF from the train station at 10 so i'll be driving with the window down

Cold weather is shitty! Makes you hate the stuff you love!

Lucky bugger, aren't you a student?!
  • That's the only reason I'm putting up with 15mpg. Normally I'm happy with any old runabout, and rarely even drive fast. But the sound of a 2.5l straight six... I can't bear to give it up.

I dont miss the sound of my previous V6, not after noticing the lack of trips to the petrol station anymore.

Gotta love diesels these days when they're as fast as petrols (well some are) but are so much better in the mpg department.

20mpg, as good as that? I was getting around 17mpg in my old ST24.

Now I get 35mpg in heavy urban traffic, 55+ on a run in my ST TDCi & this diesel is just as fast 0-60 and has more grunt when it matters.

I knew you had a Hyundai Coupe, didn't know it was a 2.7, I guess you're a year younger than me, in which case..... Sweet Zombie Jesus, where do you get the money to pay for the insurance on that!?

Not that bad maybe, but nothing's "good" in insurance when you're a 21 year old male with no NCD

I was paying about £800 on an '03 106 last year.

More than the car is worth isnt it?

Hated the days of young driver premiums and excesses, you notice the difference when you hit over 25.

yip....i love both the sound of a v6 and paying 200 quid a year for fully comp and protected NCD.

    Cheeky git!

It's worth at least twice that

But I suppose not buying fancy cars does mean I get to save money. So when the insurance is cheaper I'll be able to get something nicer. Although, out of curiosity I put a car like Benj's into confused.com and it came out at between 3 and 6 times as much as I pay on my car now, as well as the cost of buying the car in the first place, and paying more tax. That's a fair old wodge when I'm trying to save for a house/flat deposit

    You only get 20MPG for a 2.7 V6?! My dad's 3.2 V6 Merc gets upto 35MPG on a good day!

Where is SurfMatt to boast about the MPG of his rep-mobile?

+1 for the TDCI - I have returned >55mpg on Long runs!!

And it still has plenty power! Granted there's nothing nicer than the sound of a V engine, but the age of the Diesel has well and truly landed! Performance and Economy - can't beat it!

Since when is BMW estate a repmobile? Mpg isn't actually amazing - low 30s most of the time, high 30s if I drive like a gayer. Still not bad for the power and torque and it even sounds good for a diesel too...

But my old R32 Golf sounded amazing - even when idling! I do miss that sound but it was slow compared to the 3.0 twin turbo soot chucking hearse from hell...

Aha, this is where I start to win a bit!

I get very close to 50mpg on my commute (which is nearly all of my driving), I drive at the speed limit, and can go round the corners at the speed limit too, so it might take an extra couple of seconds to get to 50 or 60mph but once I'm there I stay there.

    20mpg?! pah!

I think you might win of "ease of parking" too Bails. Although the Jimny is so short and has such a small turning circle that it might be a contender...

Yea the insurance is surprisingly cheap! (23yo, 0NCB, no claims made) and only cost £800 fully comp for the year with full breakdown cover!

    heres the crack... Couldn't get insured on a 307xsi, 206gti was 1k and 206gti180 was 1.5k!

I reckon its low insurance because the V6 Hyundai Coupe is fairly rare in comparison to the above, and not really owned by Roy Bacers!

    re: 20mpg.... I said if I try I can get 20mpg.... I don't usually try

might be off to Santa Pob for a blast next weekend :D

Ah, I'd assumed because you'd only graduated last year that you were a year younger than me. But a year or 2 at our tender age makes a big difference!

I was putting in 2 years NCD and getting quotes over £1500!

I tried once, I managed 37 on a motorway run using cruse control, wasn't a lot of fun to be honest and I haven't really tried it since.

    If I wanted good mpg I would've bought a diesel instead of a V6.

The eco mentalists may hate me, but I do get a Christmas card from Opec every year which is nice

Used to get mid 20s in my R32 (3.2 V6) - it wasn't too bad on fuel really.

Current twin turbo 3.0 straight six gets mid 30s and the tax is cheap too

I can get about 55mpg out of my bike. Maybe 47-ish if I ride it like a lunatic :D

And it's MUCH faster than, I'd guess about 95% of ALL cars on the road.

BUT... It's absolutely HORRIBLE riding in the snow / ice / rain / cold / winds.... I need a car...

And where do you put your shopping/bikes/surfboards?!

I had a little fun with a pair of fast motorbikes the other day - sweeping A roads for about 5 miles. They are VERY quick on the straight (obviously) but cannot get the power down nearly as early or grip as well round bends - it was surprisingly close and rather fun
