    Cunning! 1100W is stunning- I don't think I've ever hit that. Your normalised power numbers are starting to make sense. I think I'm pretty slow twitchy- I'm barely even strong enough to tie my shoelaces.

    From my data you would need ~24.3 mph James, but I haven't checked my wheel circumference lately so that might not be very accurate.

    Another 20 seconds off my PB last night, so some slight progress.

    I do feel like I'm plateauing a bit at the moment so I'm curious to know what difference poeple think the bike can make? I'm riding an average £1k Bianchi, suspect it weighs around 21lbs. I now pretty much couldn't weigh any less without losing muscle (I'm 11stone for 6ft), so would a bike 4 or 5lbs lighter, let alone a TT bike make an appreciable difference?

    Pretty sure mine was 20mph... and I'll be changing the wheel circumference if it wasn't :)

    Narrower and/or lower will help a bit. Do you have any spacers you can take out from under the stem? (note, do these ~1cm at a time or the change may be too drastic and give you problems -- take the time to get used to the new position if you start going lower). Narrower/different bars might also help if you want a more aggressive position. And being in the drops more if you aren't already.

    Apart from getting a TT bike, that's about all you can do. 4-5lbs lighter is quite a bit lighter for a bike and gonna be very expensive! Might be better spent on aero wheels and better tires if you are going that route anyway.

    Or just train more and get stronger!

    Position will make quite a difference, I get a minute out of my R3 set up to race, and my RS set up for long rides in the hills. Look at TarmacExpert's times for the difference between TT and road - and remember his TT time was not on a great day compared to his road time.

    The bike itself won't make a lot of difference though, things like flapping clothing etc. will make more, you're riding fast, aerodynamics will make a lot more difference. Tyres and Tubes will again make a difference. But don't worry too much about it, you're really racing yourself - the conditions vary a lot between other people, so comparing your own times on the same bike etc. will be what really matters!

    Jim- I make it 20.2 miles for three laps- is that about right?

    Flix- how long have you been training for? What kind of sessions/intensity do you do? Lighter and more aero bike will help but you can usually figure about £1/gram to take weight off (bit cheaper at first then drastically more expensive as you get lower and lower) and quite a bit of wedge for a set of Heds or Zipps....

    Good advice on clothes, tires and position. If it helps my bike cost about the same as yours 5+yrs ago- it's quite big and heavy esp. with Powertap. At the start of last year's thread I don't think I could break the hour- the change has been riding a bit more and a lot harder.

    Sounds about right, but I'm sure I don't ever break the speed limit, so I don't know how I get round in 50minutes....

    It was less than 2 years ago that I did my first ever sub 20minute 1 lap.

    Funny, that. Last night I was remarking how in August of 2008 I used to drop him easily up the drag past Pembroke Lodge and now he's turning 50-min 3LCs. The student has become the teacher now! :(:lol:

    Thanks for all the response - it was more of an academic/hypothetical question, motivated by not much more than curiosity (and a hint of jealousy of all the faster times and the nice bikes I see around RP :wink: ) I certainly don't have the funds available to obtain a 16lb bike!

    I don't do much formal high-intensity training, (in fact the RP challenge pretty much is my training of this type) just regular commuting, Surrey hills riding and some sportives.

    I currently ride 4 or 5 times a week, with something like one 2 hour hilly ride with hard efforts up the hills, one RP session, a couple of reasonably strenous commutes (about 40 mins each leg), and a longer weekend ride, quite often a sportive. Overall goal is a silver-standard time in the Etape...

    Compared to last year my overall fitness is a huge amount higher. I've turned in fairly respectable times on events like the Etape du Dales and the Dragon ride, I'm certainly a lot faster up Box Hill, but my RP times have only shown fairly marginal improvement.

    Difference I suppose to last year is that I could go again this evening and turn out a similar time whereas last year I'd be wiped out for a couple of days by a sub-1 hour effort.

    Cool, I'm far from a training guru but regular 3-lappers should see you improve. I quite like 1 hour at 90% of threshold- doesn't destroy the legs but good training stimulus I think. I reckon that if you've improved *a lot* from last year then you can expect that you aren't really plateaued out in the long term:) Prob just a combination of factors that have led you to do consecutive similar times.

    Sorry for being thick, but i do not know the park at all but I do fancy a crack at this, what is the exact route ? Tried to follow it on google maps, but like I said had a brain fade.

    Not sure how tough it could really be, there's only one road in the park, and you turn left (or right if you're doing it the unpopular way) at each roundabout.

    The pedant in me's coming out but It's not left (or right) at every roundabout - two of them you go straight across no matter which direction you're going. It's pretty obvious when you get there.

    No. Sometime 10 hours in a good week. Average more like 8 hours.
    Plenty enough for Nat B racing, Crystal Palace and RP3LCs.

    And it looks like maybe I won't get a sub 50 this year :( I could barely ride it on the commute, too much dust thrown up, and a rough surface, with the odd deep pile of grit, I'd say it was unrideable at 3LC pace, maybe if you've got a cross bike.

    Yep - could try heading out to Cobham, Plugh Lane, Ockham...

    This is very annoying. Was hoping to get a few laps under my belt before the Marmotte. Chose to ride over the grass and join th path rather than ride over that stuff last night.

    yes, large areas of gravel now on top, it may have been swept, but last night it was pretty unrideable.
