Aren't they (the ones that work with STis) the BB7 Road, which are different to the MTB (flat bar) ones?

Oddly enough Planet-X are stating the following in the specifications despite it being a flat-barred build.

Brake Front - Avid BB7 Mechanical Disc Brake Road
Am I correct in thinking that the incompatibility between Road STI levers and MTB brakes is that the STI lever does not draw enough cable when fully pulled? Therefore MTB levers on road brakes would work but just have a shorter than normal pull?

The PX pic looks as if its showing silver calipers - so they're road ones ?
  • I believe that the only significance differences are the materials they are made of and the cost. The "Road" version I think are pretty recent and are probably aimed at making a few inroads into the weight concern

ETA - look at Avid's own page http://www.sram.com/avid/family/bb

If you can spot the difference between the black Road and black MTB versions, you're better than me. The expensive one is the Road SL version @ €150 and half the weight. Then there's the silver Road which talks about being compatible with Road levers. That said, when I bought a BB7 for my Boardman I just bought a BB7 caliper and it was fine

I do have a similar mount (irrc the screw loosens the ratchet) - I have to admit, I don't know why they are as small as they are but I have found that they lock on nicely to the insulation tape at the end of the bar tape. They need a bit of compression to work - either from the rubber strip or the bar tape.

Hmm, compression makes sense. I'll have another go in the morning and report back. The fact that the bars of the CX are fitted with suicide brake levers doesn't help as the underneath is v.cluttered with the levers themselves, cables and adjusters.
    Sketchley wrote:
Those light mounts are adjustable for bigger bars. Remove the light, undo the screw where the light clip on and you can dismantle the mount, then you can move the inner bit to on of three different positions making it bigger. I have two.....

I've now had another go at fitting the mounts for the £5 Phaart Aeon 3 Watt LED Front Light.

Here is the mount. I adjusted the length of the strap (as before) by easing the ratchet away from the strap with a small screwdriver. As Sketchley points out you can achieve the same by dismantling the mount.

    20121215_141356.jpg

This is the mount installed on the oversize bars of my bike.

    20121215_135018.jpg

Now I have used the rubber strip as suggested by Rolf the mount closes slightly more positively (but still not great). Some of the roads I use to get to work are in an appalling state of disrepair so I am going to use the cable tie in the photos to hold the clamp closed as a bit of reassurance.

There you go, Planet-X say bar diameter from 22.2 to 25.4mm but it will stretch (just) to 31.8mm.

    Best regards

Whoops, some editing after you posted there.
Yep, with the rotor. It was from Jensen USA, they pricematched to $123 and a mate at work was heading over to New Jersey this week so I had it delivered to their office.

It's for my 'fixed with discs' thread. Got a Kinesis DC37 fork too and going to see how they work out on the Condor commuter

  • Aha - that's what I'm hoping to do with my GoPro 3 Black

Yes - checked the weight thing. It says 170g for caliper only (without the adaptor I guess) for the SL and 320g for the standard - but including the rotor.

Would you mind weighing the rotor and caliper? Only worth bothering with if it's cheap and light.

    Rotor 96g
    Caliper + adapter 189g

I assume the adapter is the black arm thing? In that it comes with 2 adapters. The separate 20mm adapter is 19g
So 170g for the caliper alone is right

Cool - thanks. So 285g vs 320g - I don't think it's worth me swapping for 35g  the SL looks more bling though. I might change to hydraulic eventually so I'll wait.

May have been a mistake, but CRC seem to have honoured my order at £22, and have apparently dispatched it. A lot of retailers would have reneged on that; top marks once again for CRC's customer service :-)

The normal one would be a bargain, but my understanding is that this London Limited Edition is, erm, a bit limited. By that I mean rubbish.
