Or £50 extra for the carbon. Yup, I went for that- I ordered and received a carbon set from Merlin last Friday morning, the Planet X email turned up that afternoon). Decided to return it & reorder from Planet X, even with the postage costs I saved £25 & got the 12-27 cassette I actually wanted instead of 12-25.

Looking forward to trying it out on Wednesday :)

Word to the wise... I wouldn't go for 105 shifters if I were you. My left hand shifter is utterly rubbish and apparently I'm not the only one. Not sure whether Shimano have sorted the problem out with the 2010 groupset, but earlier versions are renowned to be firmly in the 'not great' category.

Not had a problem with mine in 2 years and over 8000 miles. There is an issue but it doesn't seem to be all 105 RH shifters that are bad. Just some of them. Just make sure you buy from somewhere that will replace it quickly if it breaks. Its so cheap because its now an end of life product. 105 has had a complete revamp this year to put the shift cables under the hoods and bar tape rather than being external.

Nope - they just provide you with a little label telling you not to try to shift to the third ring if you haven't got one, because it will break the mechanism. I had an off on ice over the winter and I managed to break my lh shifter this way.

SRAM all round for me next, I think.... although that would also break in the said off.... damn....

Almost 3 years with my 105 shifters and not one moment of bother with them.
  • As quite a few of these bargains are coming through Chain Reaction and Wiggle, if you click here and sign up for free, you'll get around 4% extra discount off (works for Evans too). Yes - it goes via my referral page, but you'll be able to do the same for others in the future, but it's seriously worth it. It's just nice getting even more money off and works even when you've used a voucher, discount code or just got a standard saving.

Indeed - but for the cost saving of having 2/3 speed lh shifters, I've always found that Shimano shifters have good longevity. Eventually the ratchets wear out - particularly the lh ones that have to overcome greater forces (there isn't much leverage for the front ders), but I managed about 7 or 8 years' abuse on a set of 9sp Ultegras before I induced this.

That's how we all start, a little taste, think we can handle it, before long you're trying to decide between a Wilier and a Bianchi even though you already own 3 bikes...

There's another thread about these that concluded that these aren't team replica as they're missing the hincapie logos etc.

I have one (2010 Expert edition with Ultegra bits). It's jolly fast. A joy to ride. It favours smooth roads so I'm more inclined to ride main roads than back roads.

Actually I suppose I should do a review on Wiggle and get an (infinitesimally small) chance to win another bike, yay.
The above is a post in a forum on the Intertubes, and should be taken with the appropriate amount of seriousness.
