What's all that about? There were so many worthy candidates, not only Cav, but to end up with Ryan f***ing giggs....

    Who's Giggs? Why's Ryan f**king him?

    So many unanswered questions...

Don't understand that. For a possible - even probable - life-time achievement award then perhaps but not the major annual top gong. He only plays every other game nowadays anyway.
  • Have you not considered all the armchair Man United fans? I felt it was all rather inevitable to be honest.

He was also PFA Player of the year this year. Very odd.

I agree he deserves recognition but what has he done in 2009 exactly?

Won 2 Euro cups, and been a model pro.

I hate the scum, but he is a legend. Not much personality, though!

I have met him socially, and I admire the way he behaves. He is a role model for kids, and you can't knock him for that.

Sadly, this year, there were no real personalities. Lots of sporting talent, but no Gazzas!

It was the 'I can believe he hasn't won it before, lets give it to him now before it's really too late award'

Not a Utd fan, but the guy is more worthy than most, and more worthy of a knighthood than most sporting recipients

Even his testimonial was four or so years ago so not exactly at the height of his career.

The award is SPOTY 2009. What he actually achieved this year is pretty much zilch.

Just the 20 years of winning then.

    Nowt yet this year.

It is a reflection of a career, and one that is unlikely to ever be bettered by a British footballer. Ever.

JB had a great car this year, and has had a nothing career every other year. Cavo did well, really well, but you can't argue with a public vote. Cycling aint that big as a TV sport. There was no banker candidate, and he would have gained loads by today's press making it clear no one else was in the running bar him and Button.

I'm glad he beat button. I still hate Man Ure.

Cant stand footie, cant stand footballers in general - overpaid and spoilt brats a fair amount of them. I dont mind Giggs getting this though, Button is a bit of a c*ck and he was really the only other person in the contest

Button's "I'm the champion baby" was so Austin Powers.

Austin played it for laughs, though.

Would have loved to see Murray or Khan take it too tbh. Murray hasnt yet won a title that the Brits have any respect for, and Khan has slipped off the radar since he signed a private broadcast deal. Khan also suffered some racist chants at a recent fight I'm told. A real shame that if true.

Murray and personality is an oxymoron.

And, like every other Brit tennis player, he loses. Good, but not good enough. Still. Not a winner.

So is it a personality or a sports results award?

It always seems to focus on televised sports (for obvious reasons) but there are some great British sportsters who get NO recognition.

    Like:

Debbie Bewley, World Bean Flicking Champion (and World Record holder at 14.43m)
Sean Harrison, British and Commonwealth Uphill Gardening Champion
Nathen Jiles, European Muff-Diving Champion for the last 3 years
Dave 'Midnight' Shuffell, English and Welsh Under-21 Short-stroke Fisting record-holder (154 fpm)
Penelope Schtiff, Worthing and District Rimming Champion (over 65 category)
Phil 'Mac' Avity, Cubs and Scouts' Camping Champion 2002-2007 and 2009 (2008 ineligible due to Police investigation)

    the list goes on...
  • Didn't watch the SPOTY as it's usually a football orientated ceremony anyhow.

For outright energy Cav should have won it.
For outright commercial pressure Button probably takes that.
    Giggs lifetime achievement award.
Murry takes the most miserable cretin award.
Haye the who was I and soon to be forgotten award.

All the others who I really don't have a clue, but they might be good.

I'm not a lover of football, but it was obvious, Giggs would win.
He has had a fantastic career. Had he have chose to play for England, he would have been even more popular!

Cycling is a minority sport, like it, or not, and Cav just wasn't going to get it. Cav only won six stages at the 'Tour de France', most of his competition for SPOTTY came from 'World Champions'.
I felt that Jess Ennis should have been above Button.

  • murray for the cant be bothered to turn up award (i guess hes at a tournament or something)

    cav 4th

Other vote totals were: cyclist Mark Cavendish in fourth (55,960), gymnast Beth Tweddle (38,907), Daley (36,929), tennis player Andy Murray (19,936), Strauss (17,237), boxer David Haye (13,916), athlete Phillips Idowu (4,507).

thought seve was the most deserving award though

He could have chosen to play for England but he would have never been allowed to play due to his ineligibility. He had more chance of playing for Sierra Leone than England.

But 'Sir Hoy' won it last year though, unless that was more of a novelty Olympic thing...

Anyway, I thought the BBC had dropped the 'personality' bit - in acceptance of the fact that very few of these people actually have them....?

There are several definitions of personality, the relevant one being:

a well-known person in a certain field, such as sport or entertainment

yeah, but seriously - how many people actually see it that way..??

so the award is actually for 'sports well-known person of the year'....???

Model pro  ??? Yea ask the ex girlfriends he slapped about. Giggs has as much personality as a dog turd.

F*cking dirty manc supporters somehow rigged it.

    (yes I'm a Liverpool supporter)

Agreed. I was surprised to see him in the list on the first place. Why include him and not Wayne Rooney I don't know. I smell a rat!

I wanted Cav to win, obviously, but I really thought that this year it would be Jenson Button.

Murray is in the US in training for the Australian Open next month.

Disagree. Since it came to London in 2007, the viewing figures for the Tour de France have gone up. Also, last in last year's SPOTY, cycling was all over the place, winning Best Team award as well.

Also, in 2007 (or was it 2006?) Nicole Cooke got 4th place (and an awful, patronizing and sexist interview by some git).

And now Cav got 4th place as well. So I wouldn't say that cycling is a minority sport anymore. It's defnitely growing. And add Sky's involvement to that (not that it pleases me much, though).

I really thought that it would be, again, the "cycling vs driving" awards, like last year! 8)
