It is mate - but just taken some better pics [ie the one in my sig] - should revisit the thread i guess. Bling/Chav i dont care, it rides amazingly!
  • I've had up to 3 bikes at any time (HT, full sus, hybrid), but recently decided to return to my roots and "make do" with just the one hardtail. From about 1994 to 2003 I had just one well-loved hardtail at any one time, which would be called on to do anything from a quick MTB blast through to John O'Groats to Land's End (the bike used for JOGLE mk1 was a 2000 Cannondale F900 Lefty).

Somewhere along the line, I acquired more bikes and until recently had a full sus and a HT for off-roading. With fatherhood beckoning and less space for bikes due to the sacrifice of my "bike room", I sold all but my HT back in the summer. I was nervous at first, but the return to one do-it-all bike has been just fine. It's easy to justify spending a lot on your bike / bike parts when you use it every single day!

I commute a 4-mile round trip every working day and then use it for mountain biking at the weekend. I enjoy the occasional longer road / touring ride, although I admit that I haven't used my Pace for one of these rides since selling my other bikes. I'm considering getting slightly longer frame with pannier mounts in view of this, but it's still all doable with the one bike.

I know the OP's question was whether he should get a hardtail as well as his existing full sus, but I thought I'd add this perspective on having just the one bike.

Cotic >X< - 105 and SLX go, Avid stop, XT / Mavic disc wheels and Easton finishing
  • I will be only using 1 bike after xmas although have started already with just my hardtail 20 mile commute daily and weekend use but just found I dont use my bikes as much with my busy social life.
    So Far!

Hi Brandfreak and im-trek, would you recommend your fuel exs? I'm thinking of moving to a full suss bike, and the EX8 is one of my options. What are your thougts.

The more bikes the better I say. Sadly in my house i'm being outvoted on that one!

I have the 2008 version (1st year with ABP) it's fantastic. I have changed the cockpit (wider bars, shorter stem) and the wheels (Bontrager race disc were fine but I had money for Roval Traversees :-) )
Changes to the 09 were XV air can and bontrager Rythmn wheels - adding more air everywhere - fine if you're large and need it.
Fantastic long legged XC/trail bike - buy one!!!!

I finaly hve more space :D no what to fill it with??? I'm thinking DJ/street hardtail or even a BMX for general skills and jump practice? or a road based trainning hack? The teocali is far better than I am off road (an so easy to ride) at the moment but is a bit heavy for road and not strong/small enough for jumping.

Silly little bike is winning for now.

Why are MTB economics; spend twice as much as you intended, but only half as much as you wish you could afford?

I've got 3 - commuter (single speed cross bike), carbon road bike and FS MTB. Thinking of getting a hardtail - maybe a 29er?

You,or at least I, ride a bike for many different reasons: exercise, transportation, entertainment, etc.

It makes sense to have different bikes for these different reasons.

At least that's the argument I try to use with my wife when I want to add a bike to my "stable".
  • I used to have just a 26" wheeled hybrid that I changed the tyres on, depending on what I was using it for. But I pimped it out hence leaving it locked up on the streets became a no no.

Since changing that for what I've got now (pics in sig) I've realised that a specific bikes for a specific use makes a lot more sense.

Although I can't resist pimping my cheap run around road bike, which is a bit daft really..
