  • Big thumbs up for CRC!
will be if they delivery mine

Squillinossett did the EA90sl come with skewers and rim tape?

I think the pictures of EA90sl look good and nice bit of luck on the freehub :o
  • Silver spokes though, cant decide if I like them or not?
  • Recived my wheels but they sent the wrong type and style, orderd the EA90-SL shimano but they sent me the aero model campag.
So they went back, CRC rung me to apologise and will be sending me some SL out when they get them in stock about 7 to 10 days, and they refunded my postage for sending them back.
All in all a very good ater service from CRC

Cheaper than buying a Dura Ace cassette then (£110 - £120). Very good deal even if you do need to change the free hub - wish I'd had some money left over from my bike!
I've picked a couple of new 7800/7900 cassettes off eBay over the last few months for around £65 so I don't think it has to be a given that you need to change the freehub. I'm still waiting for my order so suspect it will have the standard freehub anyway.

    Hi Everyone

Been reading this thread with interest and quite miffed to find out I missed the boat with the SLs. :(

I know you are all seemingly running Shimano but if anyone has bought them and wants to use them with Campag I have a Campag R4SL version of the Freehub.

This is the newer version of the R4 but has ceramic bearings and is lighter.

Changing requires the use of two 5mm allen keys and takes a couple of minutes.

    Link here for details:

    or here

    http://www.beyondbikes.com/itemdesc.asp ... q=&Tp=&Av=

I can e-mail pics of the actual thing if you contact me.

I'd be looking for £40 (Paypal gift) posted if anyone is interested.

well for once I had some good luck looking for a bargain, and really good service, with CRC...

I ordered when they went out of stock after seeing the comments here, and sure enough they came back into stock and I got my order through. I was worried about the DA only issue as I run Ultegra 9 sp, so emailed back and forth and had great service from CRC. They checked my specific set of wheels to make sure the cassette would fit and sure enough I got the black hub set 8)

    Good stuff CRC.

I had the revverse trouble to giner1961 I ordered some campag easton cicuit wheels and got sent shimano ones, twice. Obviously I had alerted them to the problem after the first time, and requested that they double checked before dispatch. By the time i received the second set they'd sold out of the campag ones. No apology; at first denied I'd emailed them; 'not our fault that would be the warehouse'; could they do a deal on any other wheels - 'you must be joking'. Can't say I was impressed with the service.

Any one want to buy some shimano compatible circuits ?

Well I ordered also on the advice here at £250 when they were out of stock and have just had the email this morning saying order is on its way. Looking forward to getting them. Well done CRC and thanks for the heads up on here.
  • finally got mine today as initialy they sent me the wrong wheels a per my previous post so well done CRC im a very happy chappy, roll on summer
  • Got mine today as well. :)

I got the red R4 Shimano 10 speed Cassette Body. So to recap this will accept any 10 speed cassette?
The instructions with the wheel only say to fit a cassette with an alloy carrier.
    Not individual cogs.

A really sweet wheel set & for £250 you can't argue. Begs the question if CRC can do it for £250 why are wheels generally expensive?

Need some tyres and Cassette now! Will get some hopefully there will be more sales in the new year.

    Suggestions welcome? :?

I've read this thread again and no wonder people are confused. There's quite a lot of conflicting information, and I can understand why there is confusion between the R4SL shimano freehub body (which is red, 10 speed DA only but DOESNT come on this wheelset) and the R4 shimano 10 speed one (which is also red).

However, the main thing that puzzles me is that someone in a previous post said CRC told them that the original batch of EA90 SL wheels came with red, DA only freehub bodies.

This is supported by Wiggle Customer Service in the Q&A section for the R4 freehub body which states that the red R4 is DA 10 speed only. Confusingly though, in the Q&A section for the EA90SL wheel, Wiggle say ultegra 10 is ok for the 10 speed only version of the wheel, which presumably has red R4 freehub body.

Easton's website says the red, R4 shimano 10 speed freehub body is NOT DA only.

    Whom should we believe?

I'm siding with Easton, so to answer your question you should be able to fit other shimano 10 speed cassettes to the wheel, as per the list given in a previous post.

Sorry to drag this baby up again but I rode mine today for the first time, They came with the red freehub body. I didn't fit the tiny silver spacer that came with the cassette (a Dura Ace) since the hubs were 10s (I was figuring like shimano 10s only hubs where you don't fit the cassette spacer).
Anyone know for sure if this was right (i.e. not to fit the silver spacer)?

It'll be pretty obvious if you need the spacer. If you need the spacer - the cassette will be loose and will wobble - even when you've tightened the cassette on fully. If the cassette doesn't wobble and is nice and snug - then no spacer is needed.

Sounds like you don't need it.

Not had a chance to ride mine yet as they are going on the new build so are sat in the box still.

    How did they ride?

Finally got mine through just befor xmas Shimano fit dura ace only but not a prob as i only use dura ace cass.
i have a felling though that i only got mine as they had mixed up orders and someone sent back the wheels i wanted still top wheels and top price.
Will not be using mine until the good weather comes ?
  • I understand all the confusion, let me try to explain.

10 speed cassettes have thinner cogs than 9 speed cassettes and tend to make notches in alloy 9 speed cassette bodies. Because of this Shimano introduced a new spline pattern with the first version of 10 speed (this was the original 7800 way back in 2004)
This is the same spline pattern we use for the R4 Shimano 10 speed cassette body which comes on the EA90 SL. This cassette body will fit any Shimano 10 speed cassette except junior gearing cassettes which will only fit on 9 speed bodies.

When we introduced the 2009 EA90 SLX we lightened up the cassette body by thinning thebacksidesof the splines and removing a couple of them completely. This works great for Dura Ace cassettes. However the minor diameter of the splines in most 105 and Ultegra cassettes are not exactly the same size and do not fit well. They tend to wobble when installed which can cause shifting problems. This also makes it difficult to tighten the lockring properly which can allow the cassette to move around and damage the splines. To avoid a load of shifting problems we had to say "Dura Ace only" for the R4SL 10 speed body. This body has been replaced with a new, blue, version for 2010 which fits any Shimano 10 speed cassette except junior gearing.

    that's good info..

Am I right in thinking that this 'notching' is less of a problem with SRAM cassettes because of their largely '1-piece' design for the larger sprockets..?

Oh they were a great ride. Lively and much more comfortable than the aksiums that were normally on that bike.

I just got a bit of a clunking noise from the transmission occasionally that wasn't there before, which is why I asked about the spacer. The cassette seemed to tighten up enough without the spacer. The noise was almost like the freewheel slipping ever so slightly now and again. It might be just co-incidence and the chain needs replacing but it's funny how it just started with the wheel change.

what is the durability like on velocity aerohead rims. i believe easton use some of their products. are all off centre rims more prone to cracking?
