I think I found an answer on the weight weenies forum to this problem.

    8.jpg

    WHAT YOU'RE LOOKING AT:
    Easton R4SL hub upgrades

    WHY:
Easton upgraded the R4 hub found on its top-end wheels with a series of modifications. The R4SL rear hub's axle saves nine grams and has ceramic bearings. Easton offers three "standard" bodies: Campy, Shimano 10 and SRAM. The SL bodies rid of all the "unnecessary" splines. The SRAM SL cassette body, for instance is only compatible with Red cassettes. In the photo, the cassette bodies, from left, are: Campy standard, Campy SL, Shimano 10 standard, Shimano 10 SL. SRAM standard, SRAM SL.

The Freehub on the EA90SLX wheels is Dura Ace 10 speed only - and has the freehub with less splines, etc. You CAN fit other cassettes on it, but they will chew up the freehub, etc.

This issue is specific to EASTON R4SL freehub bodies ONLY. Not to be confused with other freehub bodies and compatibilities.

The special offer wheels are EA SL (NOT SLX) and can be used with more than JUST Dura Ace 10 speed cassettes.

    Makes sense to me now.
  • Why will they get 'chewed' thouhg? Are the splines different lengths :? Would seem a bit of a marketing ploy if they are...... :?

DA have almost all the cogs on aluminium carriers, the lower groups don't. That's why DA cassettes don't chew up aluminium cassette bodies as badly.

I dunno, I reckon the DA cassette is very similar to the 105.

    DA:

    105:

Anyway, my pedantry is obviously getting the better of me, so I promise to say no more on this topic :D

  • So, for the very un-mechanically-minded of us, which cassettes will work?

    Missed it, sorry
  • While not wanting to dispute Pokerface's information, is there any reason why CRC are stating DA only on the product description?

If this is just a "copy & paste" issue from the SLX versions description then CRC must be missing out on orders!

I have checked the PDF on the Easton site (http://www.eastonbike.com/TECHNICAL/technical_FAQ-wheels.html#15) and it seems clear that the R4 hub should support the DA, (some) Ultegra & 105 cassettes as per Pokerfaces list.

I am very interested in ordering, but (mainly due to shipping costs) I need to be sure that there is not something "unusual" going on :(

I've emailed CRC with the question, so I'll await a response...

I think the chewing happens when a 9/10 speed alloy hub is used with 10 speed cassettes, the slots in the 10 speed cassette are taller to fit a 10 speed only freehub with taller splines. As far as Shimano are concerned, 9 and 10 speed cassettes are compatible with the 10 speed freebub because the steel freehub bodies don't get chewed up like aluminium ones. I have experience of these combinatiions, and I did get chewing with a 10 speed DA cassette on a 9/10 speed alluminium hub. Idon't quite buy the "DA only" specification.
  • well i orderd some ysterday even though they where showing out of stock, went on CRC site this afteroon and they where showing as having them in stock again, however they now show no stock again, reckin i have got a pair coming though as they have invoiced my card.
You can not go wrong £500 set of wheels for £250 and post free

You clearly haven't read the entire thread explain how Easton makes a freehub body JUST for DA 10. And another freehub body for Shimano 8/9/10. There were even pics to explain!
  • does not bother me always used Dura ace cassettes on all my wheels, Fulcrum 3 are Dura ace only also as im sure a lot off top end wheels are

When did you place your order? Were they showing "In stock" when you placed the order?

I had out of stock but it took my order, hoping my order will be fulfilled? :?

You will have to reply and confirm what freehub is fitted might settle the argument/discussion regarding the EA90SL.

Next part of thread should be what recommendations for cassette and tryes to go with EA90SL
  • orderd mine on Sunday, they where showing out of stock, but it had stock alert e mail showing. Checked the order today and showing sent 48hr parcel farce so should be with me tomorrow.
  • On another note im looking at fitting Hutchinson tubeless tyres, with the relevant rim tape and valve.
  • Bump, Mine arrived today, nice looking, nothing overly special though!

Spin silky smooth though and both 100% true.

Only 1.5 months until I can use them...the Boardman comes with a shim 5600 cassette so we shall see if it fits.

  • Probably too late now, but I received a response from CRC to the question as to why these are DA only wheels (hopefully they won't mind me posting it here):

"Thanks for the email. These wheels were not designed to be Dura Ace specific but the batch that we received from our supplier are all fitted with the [Red] Dura Ace Only free hub body. This freehub is specific to Dura Ace and although other cassettes will likely fit, they will damage the freehub considerably and not be covered under warranty. The standard [Black] free hub body accepts Dura Ace, Ultegra and 105 cassettes, as well as SRAM.

Hence the special offer price to try and help clear our stock; hopefully the next delivery will arrive with the standard hubs as expected.."

So for those who ordered, and planned not to use DA cassettes, the change in freehub body would be recommended....

where can I pick up a free hub, and how easy to fit?

Wiggle sells them fro around £40. Or do a search online for R4 freehub body.

    VERY easy to fit.

Cheaper than buying a Dura Ace cassette then (£110 - £120). Very good deal even if you do need to change the free hub - wish I'd had some money left over from my bike!
  • Thsi I take it?

Whats the worst that could happen if one was to use the DA freehub? would it effect performance?

    Pictures?

    Nothing for me yet

    Yep that's a regular shimano 8/9/10spd :-)

The red one with the taller splines is the DA only one. (see the wiggle link above, it has a picture of both)

You said earlier that you ordered them after their stock had run out.... that agrees with what the above email says about trying to clear their DA only stock so they can order in new stock with the 8/9/10 freehub. Maybe people who ordered before you will have the red freehub. At least it's easy to tell which is which.
  • Yea, still only paid £250 for it as well. Score.

    Big thumbs up for CRC!
