i hate to be a cryptic pedant,* but some of you are not quite formulating your clues correctly.
they should have two parts - a clue to the answer directly, a kind of thesaurus type definition - plus the cryptic bit, which is all the pieces/anagrams etc. that combine to make the answer.
a retainer thats lost it's hold on the French sailing ship (8)
For reasons of bump because i like this thread and also spanner keeps popping into my head, we need another clue
PS god knows about the 2nd one :?
I've just completed the Guardian prize crossword (Araucaria no less) while getting absolutely nowhere with those two clues.
For the 2nd clue, I was guessing ''the French sailing ship'' could be a word ending -less (le for French the and ss for sailing ship - I know that ss stands for steamship but while it's steaming it's going to be sailing). ''Tubeless'' keeps on bouncing back into my brain but I've no idea about why it would be right.

Right - ish track with the second one, First one is a bit tenuous but the main (easy _ I anticipated) clue is there.
