I sure as hell won't be losing any sleep over it. What does get my goat is people who spend a fortune on a spangly italian bike (Pinarello etc) then put bloody Shimano on it!! ARGH!!!

Now that's outrageous, diluting the purity of a thoroughbred Italian brand.

That would be like putting a German in charge of a company like Alfa Romeo or Lamborghini. What sacriledge would it be if they ever decided to put an Audi engine in an Italian car..........................................oh s#it
  • Mmm what components to buy?

Soulless equipment from a fishing tackle specialist or equipment with soul running through it's veins and the history to back it up.

It boils down to whether you are an emotional buyer (Campag) or a rational buyer (Shimano)

BTW - nobody is allowed to use the word Campy in our club. It's worse than turning up without mudguards on a winter run.

I buy because of performance. IME Campag shifts better for longer. With Shimano I found that as soon as the cables got a bit dirty shifting would be crap and the indexing would go to pot, whereas the stiff Campag springs would mean no skipping.

There's no way I'd buy inferior kit because of emotion. I buy what works the best.

Back on track, thankyou. Your club obviously knows what it is doing.

This is not a Shimano bashing thread, I really don't care what equipment you buy. It all works well. Note that my new time trial bike has a Campag Centaur U/T chainset, Dura Ace bar end shifters, Ultegra rear mech, SRAM Force front mech, and a disc wheel with a Campag splined free hub. It's all great stuff.
  • There are three cars parked in the lot, doors open, keys dangling in the ignition. On the far left, a Corvette something or other. Fast. Efficient. Dull as dishwater. On the right is a Nissan GTR, or perhaps a holographic avatar from a Play Station game. Who can tell the difference? Both fabulously well engineered and very entertaining, but designed by a manga comic artist on some really dodgy fugu.

Front and centre is a Maserati Gran Turismo coupe.

    Pick one.

These are good arguments for buying an Alfa Romeo instead of a Honda... providing you don't whinge when it keeps on breaking down.
Presumably a rear mech with a soul should be able to empathetically sense when you're strugglling & shift down for you.

You have a staunch ally Proto. I dont know why but the word 'Campy' really makes my blood boil. If the Septic Tanks want to use the word fair enough - but when Brits start using it! Fook me!

And the reason! I blame it on Sportive's - people are bypassing the old cycling club culture and just turning up to do these glorified club runs on their own. They're missing out on the many years of British Cycling culture and not learning how to ride a bike - never mind how to pronounce bloody equipment!

And another word that gets my goat - FIXIE!

It a fooking FIXED BIKE or your riding FIXED - not fixie!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've had Alfa's all my life. And not one has broken down. And everyone of them put a smile on my face when I drove them.

Can't say the same about my current Passat. Great car but soulless

I'm sure Chevrolet have an optional attachment for the gun racks that will also hold a bike, and I'd guess Nissan could provide you with a 37-function multi-purpose piece of collapsible scaffolding that doubles as a rear windscreen wiper when you don't have the bikes attached to it.

The Italians will ask if you'd prefer your bike's custom carbon cradle shaped to suit clincher or tubular tyres.

Not in my experience. Many anglers appreciate the reliability of the well made gearing as you don't want to lose that 15lb barbel as a result of the gears breaking down.

Then again there are others who prefer Abu Garcia kit as it has more 'soul' and is also very reliable. You can also chuck in American upstarts Penn. Sound familiar anyone?

I'm not sure I understand what you're saying. In one sentence you call Shimano "fishing tackle" and in the next you say that a "rational buyer" would buy Shimano. I'm confused, as usual. :? :?

Pah. Japan has even been nuked and still makes better components than Campy. style.

OK I'll rewrite it for our friends across the pond:

Soulless equipy from a fishing apparatus specialist or equipy with soul running through it's obese arteries and the history (sorry can't replace this word as your country is only 100 years old) to back it up.

It boils down to whether you are a democrat (Campy) or a republican (Shimy)

BTW - nobody is allowed to use the word Campy in our franchise. It's worse than turning up without fenders on a winter run

I think I follow you now. You're saying that, either way, it's bad stuff, because I sure don't see any difference between Republicans and Democrats other than a name. Sort of a Ford and a Chevy thing.

Where's proto gone? this topic is starting to lose its vibe! Obviously his a bit busy with his job as the OED grand chief!

I'm going to mix it up a bit now and admit that I say campy, campag, campagnolo, it doesn't matter sometimes I say one, sometimes I say another.

Call it what you want, it might annoy some people but it doesn't make you better or worse at cycling!

You poor, simple minded fool. Cycling isn't about putting your fecking feet on pedals and pushing down (or pulling up if you've got them there new fangled 'rat traps' and toe clips) and getting all sweaty. It's so much more than that. It's about passion, life, death, style, cameraderie, and tradition. And the tradition in our fair land is that you call it fecking CAMPAG.

I'm not going to attempt to convince you all with linguistics, logic, or what they might or might not say in Mexico City. I don't fecking care. The English speaking world (and that does not include the USA) says CAMPAG

'Campy' (yuck, I feel dirty now) really boils my p*ss. I hate it. Fecking hate it. It's CAMPAG. It's creeping into our lives and it will be stopped. If I ever see it in C+, I'm off to Cycling Weakly and will not return.

Editor Jeff Jones, I know where you live. Remember that!

Better check your brake cables in the morning.

Couldn't give a stuff about fixed, fixie, fixed gear. But 'Campy' is just wrong.

Changed my mind. Fixie is out. Do as Rake says. Up against the wall. Want a blindfold? Last request?
