Just had a look at the time grades.

19mph+ average over 83.5 miles to achieve a gold time on the Epic route. Thats gonna be hard work unless you can get in with a decent group.

Tiz very very flat apart from the wall that is Blissford Hill so 19mph avg is doable esp. in a good group assuming you can recover quickly.

Fixed that for you. I'll be bronze in any case, even if I somehow get a working road bike sorted this week.

Pah I laugh at your mole hill, call that a hill, why when I was a lad even this would be tackled on the FGSS

That's my plan as well - I'm hoping its one of those things where experience counts as my one and only attempt last year was a resounding failure :( Planning to ride a few this year and hopefully get to the point where I can stay with the pack.

That was exactly my experience. Started at the back and yo-yoed on and off on each corner. Finally got dropped after 15minutes and spent the next 30mins trying not to get lapped  Admittedly, it was one of the final ones held last year and I wasn't that fit but still...

My last run over the Cotswolds was 15mph so I'm feeling reasonably confident - I'm thinking of entering the Highclere but I'll wait to see how I do on the New Forest first

Are you mental? I've just had a look at that and read the chaps blog article on the ride last year and I already feel exhausted! It looks like a good challenge but more like something a masochist would enjoy!

I mean how on earth do you get up a 30% climb without walking!!!!

No that sounds perfectly sane! I'd love to have a crack at those climbs - just not all on the same ride ;-)

Awesome, was going to ask how possible this was, suggested gold to my mates, so should have a team of 3 others to work with over the standard route. Guessing its all going to come down to the weather/wind on the day.

I'm doing the Evans Ride It sportive in Milton Keynes on the 25th of April. Only doing the short route (30 miles) but it's still further than I've ever ridden in one go before. Really should do some riding other than my 4 mile each way commute for a bit of practice any week now. My plan is to just wing it, it's only 30 miles eh.

I did the FWC last year and there was a car burning it's clutch out on Hardknott Pass on one of the switchbacks. The climb itself is about 33%, and even steeper on the switchbacks. I took a standard chainset with a 25-12 casette and had to walk at the first switchback, but looking back I think I gave up to early, i was beaten psychologically rather than physically.

The Cumbrian Killer goes up in the other direction which is even harder, and being stuck on 25-12 with a standard chainset again I rather suspect I'll be walking up it again

Watching the eventual winner Rob Jeb, attack it like it was nothing and pertty much sprint up was one of the most awsemone sights I've ever seen

Kirkstone is fun, I've done it before and the descent is awsome, although I suspect it'll be in the opposite direction this time

Hardknott is tough in either direction - done it in a car and on foot - can't imagine even attempting it on a bike

It's even worse pushing a bike up it, with carbon soled shoes and road spuds :?

I had an interesting descent of Wrynose last year when we had a hail shower between the two passes, Wrynose was a mixture of ice and running water by the time I got there. It's the only time I've ever stopped to walk down a descent, which proved to even more treacherous than staying on the bike. I've never been so scared on two wheels

We went camping just the west side of Hardnott (at Boot ) last year. Mrs. Sat Nav decided it was a good idea for me to drive over it with a fully laden car and trailer. Scary stuff, make no mistake. Luckily, Audi made my car bad-ass.

My brother-in-law drove over it on the way back (we chose a different way home) and fried th clutch on his Focus (no trailer). The moral of this story? Only cycle over it on a German bike.

No chance. I'm doing something that weekend. I'm sure I am...

Have been up Birker Fell. Stayed in a cottage in Eskdale, just by the bottom of it, about five years ago. I rode to the foot of Hardknott and thought "NFW", so turned around and rode up BF. It was very unpleasant. I had to stop. Twice. I was heavier and my gears were jumping everywhere and I was wheezing like an asthmatic chipmunk. Going down it was much more fun.

There's a road the other side of Birker Fell - it heads down to a main road. It's like a cliff face.

This is all part of my plan to destroy the competition, now then what's Will3 weakness....?

Riding down Hardknott is arguably even less fun than riding up it...
