Compact vs. Standard

Can I be the first to nominate this as 'Thread of the Year'? Guru Sasquatch has given us physics, physiology, probability theory, sports science, medical advice and yet I've learned...f**k all. Funny stuff though, even if I have read the whole lot and now fear for my mental health!0

Compact make you strongMore problems but still living....0

Contador already trains on a compact. How do you explain his super high VO2 max!!!?
Bradley started using one to. How do you explain his dramatic weight loss!!!? That is high intensity training with high cadence at 75%HR. You can't just do high cadence. You need a compact to do it.
I say it again COMPACTS are good for beginners and pros alike. Not to mention intermediates. They suit all. Ask Tyler Hamilton.0 -

You obsessed with Hardknott. The data is relevent at those speeds. It has nothing to do with your precious hill. The speeds are relative to each other. Of course for your precious hill the speeds would be different but the compact is king. Compact man is lighter so he go up the hill alot faster anyway thanks to his superior training of many years. So he has annihilated standard man.
Anyways don't forget to thank me when you win the Tour De France next year.
And you don't read the author of posts, that was my first post on the thread...0 -

Marathon runners might have very little fast-twitch muscle and low BMI, but they will have strong hearts.I doubt there are many, if any marathon runners who only run at a 'steady state cardio'. I haven't read the whole thread, but you seem to be suggesting that marathon runners have unhealthy hearts.
A runner who runs(what else) more intensively or trains more intensively will have the stronger heart than someone who runs one pace. Same goes if it were cycling. I don't see runners in the marathon going quick quck slow, do you? Best way to lose muscle is to go on long run. You need muscles for cycling!Pross wrote:Training needs to be balanced. Low intensity workouts will assist in burning fat whilst exercising at higher intensities can help build power. All this pseudo science on a beginners forum is dangerous IMHO.
Let me stop you there. High intensity workouts will burn more fat overall which is what really matters. So that is fact not fiction. Look it up.
High intensity workouts give you a stronger heart and better health and burn more fat. Training for high cadence on an indoor trainer in short durations to begin with is ideal.
In olden times when man was running from dinosaurs etc. He would sprint away for short duration. He wouldn't go on a 20 mile run. We are still the same man today. Short duration high intensity sprints are alot healthier for you.
You don't improve your VO2 max by going on long rides, which is what we are after to enter the Tour De France.0 -

I'm going to let you stop there GS.
Please stop. Please. In olden times when man was running from dinosaurs etc...
Quite telling......He would sprint away for short duration. He wouldn't go on a 20 mile run. We are still the same man today. Short duration high intensity sprints are alot healthier for you
And all the evidence would suggest that prehistoric man would have rarely lived beyond 30, so quite what your glimpse into man's ancient past proves is beyond me.
I love this thread!0 -
of course, you could always have a triple providing 53-11 (for when you have just increased the life insurance), all the gears you want at the low end plus ultra close ratios gears for the really useful range. No compromise!
Nah, it would never catch on...0 -

Thread of the year imo.
I don't think a man who has never owned a track pump should be giving detailed training analysis on how to become a pro cyclist.
He's been riding a bike for probably a couple of months at the most and read an article about high cadences in cycling weekly.0 -

The same knob who was also asking about what sort of batteries to get.
Basically the biggest noob on here (not an issue, everyone starts somewhere) trying to bullshit like a pro after reading for a couple of hours.

I been cycling long time in pastl. I come out of retirement. Big deal. Since i come back to cycling the technology has changed. I have winter hack for now. I am built like Fabian but more so.
Are you going to tell Eddie Mercx he know's nothing as well.
One of the biggest abusers of drinks and smoking are medical staff. Yet you goto your doctor and take his advice as infallible.
Why all you here when you should be out training, ask yourself. I won't be.0 -
You ride a standard and 'compact double' is a fairly new thing. You would have had a triple in your day. So you have never owned a bike with a compact. Yet here we are with 12 pages of your guff.... and no idea ...
FCN: 30 -
Not all coaches have won the Tour De France either. Of course i rode a compact they are not a new thing. Compact cranks originated from mountain bikes.
Stephen Hawking doesn't talk right either. Doesn't make him stupid.0 -
So you rode shorter gears on a mountain bike and from that experience are advocating a shorter geared chainset for road use?... and no idea ...

No, but he's not on a forum advocating vocal techniques.... and no idea ...

Read between the lines.
I said i rode a compact and that they originated from mtn bikes.
That is 2 sentances.
I didn't say i rode a compact on a mtn bike.
Yet you assumed i did.
Now do you see where the problem lies...0 -
Stay on the topics of compacts and standards, don't take away from the golden treasure trove of advice i gave to the OP as well as the few other helpful souls.
At the end of the day i am allowed to give my helpful opinions.
There is more than 1 way to train. Your's sound outdated.
If i am a so called troll. Who's to say i didn't set those topics up.0 -
My what? I've given no advice.... and no idea ...

Yes, and you have to be flexible in your approach with different people, this is what i have an issue with with you. You refuse to accept that different people need different thing and that people can well use a standard perfectly safely with no loss of performance.0 -

That' depends on the cause of death. There training techniques were healthy, fast sprints but there diet was bad.nasahapley wrote:

This is another example of injustice. Look on page 4-5 , i said this.giantsasquatch wrote:
At the end of the day you ride what you want. Everybody has individual tastes, live in different terrain and have personal requirements.
See, that is one example.
Sure you can use a standard. But i recommend you use a compact 8)
