    I don't go fast

My top ever speed was recorded (bizarrely) not on a mountain but on the A303
I wasn't drafting traffic, I had 28mm tyres but I had just fitted a new rear hub

Managed to get 47.5mph a couple of weeks ago with a slight wobble.

There are some descents in the peaks which can get me to 48mph without any pedalling.

Did 62 down the A54 once, about 56/8 down the Cat & Fiddle and 69 down Ventoux.

Tell us on what section of the Cat & Fiddle descent you hit 56/58 mph - its not very steep in either direction, whilst there may be other places in the peaks where you may hit the 50's, I find it very doubtful you've hit that sort of speed down there
  • I was also in France last year as a tourist and recorded 100km/h down the back of Ventoux on a Polar. Had my chin down near my front wheel. I'll never forget it. Yeehaa. I am told its pretty common around there? I am trying to add a screen shot of the download is it possible on this forum?

I've never dared go down that hill as I was always scared of the left hander at the bottom. Almost did it yesterday but the damp roads put me off!

I'm a very good descender. On the Ventoux, perhaps it was the extra weight of my rucksack that did it (& obvious tailwind). It's not that difficult to go fast if you can get aero enough.

Oh, and the slowest i've gone without falling off up a climb is 1.2mph. If you can do that clipped in, you'll know how scary it is!

69 mph with a rucksack, descending ventoux ?

    Please.....

  • The descent after the Galibier, the Lauteret I think.
Had to slow down for traffic through the tunnels.

I was far too cooked at that point to do much other then coast down. Don't think I could have got to that speed with a compact anyway

And there I was thinking that the two do not go together...

47.8 on the Dartmoor Classic. I reckon a bit more effort getting up to speed might have broken the magic (for me anyway!) 50 but it didn't seem like that fast a bit of road. There were other parts that felt much faster but obviously weren't!

Mine went up to the max on the computer (55mph I think) when descending Snae Fell in IoM cycling week (Mannin Veg??) and felt like I accelerated further. Thought I'd take advantage of the closed roads - still finished 15 minutes down on the bunch though having got dropped on the climb before the mountain. Got back to my hotel to find I was missing a couple of spokes from a clash of wheels early in the race

Fastest crash was at just over 40mph on a race in the Forest of Dean going down a hill before the Speech House climb. A sheep ran into the bunch and I tried to avoid the carnage by riding on the verge - would have been OK but for a drainage ditch, ouch!!

That was coasting :D You would not be able to put any power into pedals after about 50mph as you would spin out even on a 53 x 11, I was just freewheeling in an aero position.

Did 49 on that same drop on Sunday for a charity ride. It's a quick hill, but a nasty turn at the bottom!

53 mph seems to be my limit. Did it a couple of times, on the A632 north of Matlock, down the Cote de Halembaye between Maastricht and Liege, and down Snake Pass in a mad storm.

Would like to go down the Passo Fedaia in the Dolomites, a 4 km straight stretch of 12% on good tarmac, a place to go over 100 km/h

56mph on descent on Limeburn Hill in Dundry near Bristol. I reckon 60mph would be doable with a tail wind and a bigger gear.

What left hander? Slack Hill is straight down and up the other side, if we are talking about the same place.

Yeah it's the same one, I always thought there was a bit of a kink at the bottom but sounds like it's not as bad as I thought!

its just outside stourbridge on the A456 if your coming from Birmingham its the hill just after The Badgers Sett pub that has the traffic lights and the sports car garage at the bottom
  • Did 52 and 54 on the bike leg of the Half Ironman in Sherbourne in 2003 (repeat lap). Scared myself witless the first time but went for it the 2nd time. Almost too terrified to glance down at the speedometer. I had a short moment of doubt about going for it but just thought what the hell and put my head down and got my ar*e up. great fun!!

Have regularly got into the high 40s coming off the hills in Wiltshire and Caerphilly Mountain in S. Wales but traffic and residential speed limits have got in the way of anything quicker .....

  • i did 43.1 down Rockingham hill and had to first overtake a motorbike who had to slow up for the speed camera 30mph limit half way down,he looked a bit surprised when i went by him i,m sure with a favorable wind you could do 45-50 down here as its just been resurfaced, good job us cyclists dont need number plates

So what gear did you have for that? I spun out at 50mph downhill on 51 x 12 at over 120rpm so you either have a huge gear or can spin like Chris Hoy, :D

Just did a calculation using machine head gear calculator, you would need to do 160rpm to do 55.3mph with a 53 x 12 gear, impressive :D

    Not if you were freewheeling.

Heading up Thornton Hill (I think that's the road) near Ingleton (Cumbria/Yorkshire) tomorrow (if the weather holds up for a few hours). One bitch of a hill to get up, one steep bugger to get back down! Shuld take my max speed past the 40mph I've hit coming down Richmond Hill next to Ashton Court in Bristol.

I have gone faster than that freewheeling but Steve said tailgating on the flat so I assume he had to pedal as I do not think you can freewheel on the flat at 55mph :D
