Steve Peat for Sports Personality of the Year?

  • It's Button's award if he wins the title this year, definitely IMO.
  • Oh, actually, looking at the list, I do recognise more of them that I'd thought.
It must have been people on the shortlist I didn;t recognise then.

There's also people like Steven Redgrave, who I had no idea who the hell he was UNTIL he won it, and still wouldn't recognise if I tripped over him.
Also more unknowns, Zara Phillips? Kelly Holmes? Andrew Flintoff? Steve Davis? Liz McColgan? etc
Dunno who the hell they are.

You don't watch a lot of sport then?

Seriously though, what the hell happened in 2006?!
    Winner: Zara Phillips
    2nd: Darren Clarke
    3rd: Beth Tweddle

  • Wasn't 2006 the first year that the winner was decided by a public vote?

The comentary from that british guy was rubbish.

All he did was swear, very poor IMHO.

The other guys hardley even spoke, I would have told him to shut up.

But apart from that, some good action.
  • that British guy was Rob Warner and for me he IS the voice of mountain biking. He 's totally biased and opinionated and brilliant. Try watching the snoozefest that is biking on Eurosport and you'll see the difference.

yeah, Eurosport coverage is bloody awful I admit. The trouble with Warner is that, while he is sweary and entertaining, he's not actually that bright, so just comes over like a schoolboy potty-mouth. just goes to show how much of a minority sport we have that Warner is the best of this bad bunch when it comes to coverage.

mind you; Rob Warner for SPotY is an idea I could get behind. He'd be late and then finally turn up having been pissed since mid-aftenoon. Would proceed to speedboat the presenter's tits assuming buxom bird or punch them, if it's a guy, then pass out on screen, after verbally abusing the audience and urinating in the corner.

I could be up for a bit of that :D

Beer in moderation ... is a waste of beer

If riding an XC race bike is like touching the trail,
then riding a rigid singlespeed is like licking it
... or being punched by it, depending on the day

Yes, when I was talking about a small group of drunk mtbers at the back cheering, I always pictured Warner there, cheering the loudest.

  • We are a minority sport at the end of the day and we can barely get a mention on the radio, let alone on tv.

I listened to the lunchtime radio news on Radio 5Live, the Bbc's dedicated sports station, on Sunday afternoon. No mention of Peaty, instead we got 10 minutes of discussion around a comment that Andrew Strauss made regarding training. (I didn't know who he was either, apparently he hits a ball with a bat for a living.)

We'll just have to wait and see if he gets a pat on the back.

    Wait, a minority sport?
I'm sure there's a hell of a lot more mountain bikers than there are 100m sprinters, marathon runners etc. And epecially "eventing" I mean, what the fark is that anyway?

Seriously, I don't 'get' athletics, it's boring as hell to watch. I get rather annoyed that people will absorb themselves completely when the 'games' are on, yet will be completely ignorant of it the rest of the year.
Same with the bloody cricket, snooker, tennis etc. All these "fans" only seem to watch it when the big event of whatever sport is on.

Supposedly cycling's the country's second biggest participation sport, after fishing. But I don't know if they include kids and commuters in that or not. But, that's not so much because there's loads of us, more because most people don't do any sport at all... But as far as audiences go mtb is really tiny.

Well, the MTB audience is going to be tiny, because the only bloody coverage is on Freecaster.

But that's not what I meant anyway. What I mean is that a hell of a lot of winners are from a minority sport. Turpinr seemed to suggest that some athletic sport was less of a minority than MTB.
  • definitely, he is a bettersports personality than most of the other candidates.

Did you just call fishing a sport??? :? :?

Hey, there was a "supposedly" in that sentence  I'm not convinced that non-competetive cycling is a sport either... Motor racing's a sport, driving around isn't.

You don't have to be competing for it to be a sport, do you? :?:
  • Northwind

Nah, it doesn't have to be, I'm just using "non competetive" to seperate recreational riding out from organised competing, which is a pretty different kettle of fish. It definately IS a sport, recreational riding I'm not sure, not just because it's noncompetitive. I quite like the driving comparison, I think that works quite well. It's an activity but is it a sport?

Well what about rock climbing? That's a sport right? Even when you don't compete?

I'm thinking that maybe riding your bike to the shop to get a loaf of bread (cue hovis music!) isn't a sport, but tear-arsing down trails as fast as you can probably is.
Maybe a sport is something where you push yourself?
If you take your everyday car to a track day, and push it, then surely that becomes motorsports?

    hmm.

Don't know. I never thought of my trackdays as sport tbh, but maybe some people do. (Mine come under the same heading as my mountain biking, "C**king about")

  • Darts can't be a sport IMO.
How can it be classed as a sport if you can be a chain-smoking, obese, heart-attack-waiting-to-happen and yet still be classed as an 'athlete'??

It's a game, just like snooker, bowls and dominoes.

While it would be nice to see peaty gettign this recognition, I thnk we have all overlooked the momentous achievement :? of the England cricket team winning the Ashes back from Australia. With the following that cricket has and his retirement from Test Cricket, the winner is going to be Flintoff.

I'm not a cricket fan - I'd actually rather watch soemone fishing - but with the armchair support cricket enjoys I think it's a dead cert
