Steve Peat for Sports Personality of the Year?

I know he'd never win the stupid thing, but wouldn't it be sweet just to get him nominated... Bear with me... In 2007 a campaign, including the motorcycle press and letter writing campaigns from fans to the BBC regions managed to get James Toseland onto the shortlist, despite the fact that he couldn't win a Moto GP race if he was the only entrant... *
SO what do you reckon, the campaign to have Dr Peat come in 4th in the 2010 BBC Sports Personality of the Year starts here?

He was once at the awards for being polled highly.
I think we should write to the queen - it is MBE time.0 -

The problem you have here is that Toesland is on the TV every other Sunday and Suzi Perry does her little "James, look at my babbajangas!" dance every week so the general public, even if they have no interest in MotoGP, have a vague idea who he is . . . plus, he's quite photogenic. Peaty, on the other hand, will shatter the camera lens if he smiles. No offence, Big Chap.
The MBE thing could be a goer though. We could get all the roadies on board with a little emotional blackmail. "We all voted for Chris Hoy, now its your turn to pay us back!"
I do believe you can nominate someone through the .Gov website.0 -
Thought you had to play puffball to win?0

Tell that to Zara Phillips. She doesn't know if it's New Year or New York.0 -
It's true, Toseland has managed to turn a substantial number of motorcyclists gay, Peaty on the other hand has turned some gay men straight. But he does tick all the other boxes other than centrefold.Uncompromising extremist0

He certainly deserves it, not just because of his world championship, but the other wins:
17 world cup rounds (record)
3 overall world cup champion
7 times national champion
3 times European champion
And all he has done for the sport too. It seems that for the non cycling public, road and track is what they are used to. Tradition I think, I know there are many many more MTBers than track riders. If we had a Olympic DH title, Commonwealth, plus multiple events, I am sure that Peaty would have racked more golds up.0 -
I agree, plus I do believe there'll be the Steve Peat Academy sometime soon.
I like the MBE idea.0 -
Here's the spiel on the .gov website:
Before you make your nomination, ask yourself the following questions. Has your nominee:
* made a difference to their community or field of work?
* brought distinction to British life and enhanced its reputation?
* exemplified the best sustained and selfless voluntary service?
* demonstrated innovation and entrepreneurship?
* carried the respect of their peers?
* changed things, with an emphasis on achievement?
* improved the lot of those less able to help themselves?
* displayed moral courage and vision in making and delivering tough choices?
I think the good Doctor has all those bases covered.

I must have only recognised abotu 3, maybe 4 "sports personalities of the year" winners.0 -
I still cant believe it when I meet people who don't know who Lance Armstrong is. Steve Peat will be even worse. I know road cyclists who don't know who Steve Peat is. I think I know mtbers who don't know who he is as well.
I need to meet new people... :?yeehaamcgee wrote:Isn't that what always happens?
With the main audience not knowing who it is that's won, or the small group of mtbers getting the beers in at the back?0 -
I know MTBers who don't know what "people" are.0

Ahem, anyway, no I meant that they're generally fairly unknown folk that win.0 -

I know all of them up to around the time when I was 3 or 4 (didn't bother looking back further), except for a few, like some rower and an eventer.
And it will be tough competition this year I think, Lewis Hamilton, Bradley Wiggins, and you're all forgetting Mark Cavendish. He's almost got to be a certainty for it.0 -

Oh, actually, looking at the list, I do recognise more of them that I'd thought.
It must have been people on the shortlist I didn;t recognise then.
There's also people like Steven Redgrave, who I had no idea who the hell he was UNTIL he won it, and still wouldn't recognise if I tripped over him.
Also more unknowns, Zara Phillips? Kelly Holmes? Andrew Flintoff? Steve Davis? Liz McColgan? etc
Dunno who the hell they are.0 -

Yeah I didn't know who Zara Phillips was, but Kelly Holmes? You must know who she is. Andrew Flintoff as well. I hate cricket, I still know who he is.
Kelly Holmes even had a Chris Hoy style thing with kellogs..

Did Cavendish win the race? Nah... nice achievment, not enough to win the whole award though.0

I'd argue currently the toughest to beat would be either Andrew Strauss, Jenson Button or Bradley Wiggins.0
-
Gotta ask - what has Wiggins done this year? I honestly don't know.0

Not a hope in hell this year. No one watch the athletics?
