I have a nice "collection" of Bic biros and the odd free promotional pen for when I'm feeling posh.

Harry - classic "pretending to be ironic" post... gotcha.

Sounds a pretty odious individual. Presumably you managed to refrain from dishing out any Gene Hunt-style treatment?

Anyway, if Audi is the new BMW - then what's BMW... the old Mercedes? I'm confused.

  • BMW, Audi, Saab, Alfa, whatever else...who cares - they're all specs rapidly dissappearing in the mirrors of my GSX600! Wanna go on about standings 1/4s, 0-60 and 0-100 times? Be my guest!

You want speed and performance? Lose 2 wheels 8)

But where do you put the golf clubs?

I never claimed that they it was practical...just better handling, higher top speed, faster acceleration...and infinitely more affordable. Hell, you can get a ten year old Ducati 851 Superbike that'll wipte the floor with just about most things you can buy today at a fraction of the price!

As far as top speed is concerned - the limit is the limit be it 20, 30 or 70 but the race to the limit...now that's where the grin is at!

Hell - a capable 10 year old 600cc Sports Tourer costing £1k can still reach 60 from a stand still in less that 4 secs...but try telling that to rep man  Hours of endless entertainment and laughs a plenty at their expense.

Even funnier when the roads get a bit twisty and the lack of ability for the average car driver to do anything except stomp the right boot down becomes apparent

Yes but I'm quite keen on being alive. Bikes are mostly very quick but offer zero protection from accidents (and however good you are, other people are stupid), zero space for kit and aren't very sociable. The car vs bike argument is lamer than a one legged horse.

I have blasted a few bikes before (I know how quick they are) - they can't do corners as quickly or brake as late so it's easy to use that as an advantage.Yes they do 0-60 in almost nothing but have very little torque. And some people can drive properly..

I've highlighted the important bit...in my experience most people can't. My g/f in her Smart car is 'real world' quicker than most drivers in our area because she has excellent reactions, superb observation, anticipates well and carries speed (plus she had a competition licence and raced cars from the age of 14!!!)

I've no arguments with you re protection (none) and braking but would argue the case for cornering...a good rider on a 400cc who knows how to brake correctly, set the approach and ride through a corner is much quicker that the average car driver.

When the machine weighs next to nothing and the engines are designed to rev to 12,000rpm torque isn't such an issue...and if you want torque a Ducati 996/1098, Honda VTR1000 or Aprillia Mille all have it by the comparative bucket load

And if I want to carry things I take the Scenic!

Wastelander - fair enough and despite not being a bike fan, I have huge respect for what they can do but this scene sums up how even the best riders can die.

If I see anything like a Ducati, R1 or any other loon bike, I would never even think of "having a go" but lesser machines can be caught if you know their weaknesses - which I do...

Cool girlfriend BTW! My wife learned to drive (at 17) in a new Impreza Turbo and tested a new Supra aged 18 (a while back) - she loves quick car and really like the 335d.
