I was told that Saab's are driven by independently minded, free thinking individualists.

    So I bought one.

    Mercs - the living dead

Maybe 15 years ago. They are now re-badged Vauxhalls with a 30% price premium...
Not a fan of current Saabs at all.

Well, Surf-Matt, kiss goodbye to anyone ever letting you out at junctions.

I don't know about Audis but I look at my Skoda as a kind of Tesco Value Quattro, great car.

Round here (narrow country lanes between Dundee and Perth are my cycling habitat) the cars to fear are very, very wide Mercs being driven down the middle of the road by old ladies, when you see one you just have to dive into the hedge.

    Ermm I'm a solicitor

You wouldn't happen to have been drink driving and attempting to fight with a Police officer about a year ago were you?

Naa. if I'm going go have a fight with a copper I try and stay sober. I just take some coke instead. It make the reactions so much quicker!

That must be brilliant if only for the times in life when someone says to you "I hope you know a good lawyer", and you can reply "I AM a good lawyer".

Well it's wife's really and it's... a Suzuki Jimny!! Absolutely no aggro from anyone when driving it - ever! Very good off road (better than a Defender in many situations), reliable, pi55 easy to park - just a bit of a laugh really!

Been surprised actually - lots going out of their way to let me out at junctions - maybe the estates look less annoying?!

As a non-driver I'm at a loss to understand this obsession with cars. Why spend more money than you need to on what is a motorised tin box, it is a transportation device, nothing more, it certainly won't restore a flagging libido, no matter what the adverts imply.

Cressers - each to their own. Driving a decent car is fun for many and a good car is safer, more fuel efficient and will last longer.

Many do buy them for image, others just like them. I'm sure you spend money on things people find pointless too? The one I really can't understand is expensive watches for example.

Please name one Alfa (bar the 8C) that:

    Handles properly.
    Won't break constantly.
Isn't an overpriced GM car in drag.
    Is RWD
Is 4WD but doesn't weigh around 1800kgs like the Brera. Only Alfa could make a car with that much power go soooo slow...
    Is properly quick.
    Isn't gay. :wink::lol::lol:

Have to say that both as a cyclist and a driver, the most tw@ttish behaviour I encounter on the roads is usually perpetrated by drivers of BMWs and Audis. A couple of recent journeys up and down the M40 and M6 confirmed this, almost all the 90 mph fast lane tailgaters were BMWs and Audis.

Still, I guess it's kind of like being branded - at least you know what to expect when you see one and you're not taken by surprise, except on the odd occasion when the driver actually behaves courteously.

To further the generalisations, even worse behaviour comes from taxi drivers, and - worst of all - Royal Mail vehicles, which seem to be driven by a special brand of nutter...

Günther Quandt, whose family became major shareholders of BMW 15 years after the war, was a member of the Nazi Party from 1933. After Hitler's election he was appointed to the position of Leader of the Armament Economy, which was a title given to industrialists who played a leading role in the Nazi war economy. Quandt's factories supplied ammunition, rifles, artillery and batteries for the Nazis and, it is claimed, used slave labourers from concentration camps in some of his factories.[55] Quandt's first wife, Magda, later married the Nazi propaganda chief, Joseph Goebbels.[56]

Former Danish freedom fighter Carl Adolf Sørensen (b. ca. 1927) has been asked to meet with the Quandt family and possibly receive compensation, but has repeatedly refused to do so on the grounds that it is too late. In 1943, as a 17-year-old, he and 39 other resistance fighters were sent to Germany where they worked with dangerous chemicals, some dying within a few months, and only four of the group are still alive (as of May 2009).[58]

    Sleep well I hope

My 156 handles well enough, she does have factory uprated suspension and lovely 5 spoke split rims on which help, not that I drive like a prick on public roads enough to notice. Its not a GM chassis, its an Alfa one (type 3 3rd series). Who notices on their daily commute what wheels provide the drive? When sitting in London traffic I often think that I might be able to go a bit faster if my car was being pushed instead of being pulled. 4 wheel drive? Again, when driving on Londons slippery tarmac covered roads, I often dream about having 4 wheel drive. Is properly quick? I can reach the next set of traffic lights or the back of the traffic jam in front of me quickly enough thanks. Isnt gay? Oh well, I fully admit that I chose my car because its pretty. Honestly. Show me a bee em veh thats even remotely pleasing to the eye?

Whether you like watches or not, the right watch eg Rolex Daytona, is an investment. It'll be around way after your car is in the scrap yard and be worth more than it's purchase price in the future. In fact they sell for over rrp now.

What's wrong with a Casio G100 if the point is to tell the time rather than have an illousory status object?

Yes, and if they don't live on 'Letsby' avenue and eat 'Irish Stew' for tea!

Anyway, if Audi is the new BMW - then what's BMW... the old Mercedes? I'm confused.

Got to take exception to this as a BMW driver & cyclist! Most inconsiderate to cyclists...Idiots in Chelsea tractors using country roads as rat runs closely followed by Volvo drivers doing same. Worst tailgaters?? Those idiots with the all noise & body kit hatch backs who see the 'M' badge on my car & have to get past me at all costs.....prats!!

I didn't say there was anything wrong with any watch, did I? I was simply giving an example as to why people may buy an expensive watch with regards Matts post. Nothing to do with an 'illusory status object'

Utter bo77ox do people buy a Rolex as an investment - they buy it to look flash and many even collect them. They don't tell the time any better than a Casio (in fact they are worse), they need servicing and if I see someone wearing one (usually made very obvious) I just think "what an utter t1t" - if you HAVE to have an expensive watch (I can't see why) then there are much more subtle ways of doing it. Rolex = muppet.

Stewie - Alfas are sold as "sporty" cars - they aren't - FWD is not sporty, nor is weighing far too much. Nor is breaking down constantly.

I have driven a mates 156 2.5 V6 many miles and was thoroughly unimpressed. It sounded nice for sure but it was horribly unreliable. I also test drove a 147 GTA before I got my Golf R32 (sold ages ago) - hideous torque steer, shoddy build quality. So unless looks are all important (and I think they look contrived - an E90 M3/AMG Merc/Audi A4 looks about a billion times nicer) then why get one? And why try and look sporty if all your driving is in London?

Nicky - what "M" car have you got?

BMW have got a bad rep and are often driven badly but I find it's the social climbing middle management wannabees in small engined company Beemers that are the culprits. Ones bought properly (not on the never never) with decent engines are genuinely bloody good cars. No one makes engines with so much power yet such good fuel efficiency and low emissions. Which can't be bad.

    Errrrrrr ................................... I've got a Rolex.

Oyster Perpetual datejust, stainless steel. Indeed, not as accurate as a £10.00 watch from the market, but still a lovely thing.

I've also got a LOOK 585 with blingtastic carbon bits on it. No faster than a £1500 Trek.

Is there a pattern here?

Of course people buy them, and other makes of watches, as an investment. Some of them are not even worn, which blows your theory and generalisation about them being bought to look flash out of the water. You obviously don't know anyone who does collect/invest, but that's not to say they don't, so you make yet another uneducated generalisation.

In fact, as you live in Malpas, I'm surpised you've ever seen one.
