Cyclist under HGV on Thames Street/Southwark Bridge Junction

A HGV ("Jim'll Fix It" on the side) was turning left onto the Bridge and heard these three screams as I turned off left up the cycle path up to Cannon Street. Sounded female. The lorry stopped and seems she was stuck under there.

Seriously hope she's ok. :(

Andthere's a motorcycle smashed in two along Embankment in a collision with a car. Embankment was shut off after the HoP.

Stay safe, all.

I hope they are OK as well, it was on my route to work.

It was a "Jim'll Mix it" cement lorry.

From the look of it, it appeared the cyclist (black drops) was going straight and the lorry was turning left.

Bike well under the front wheels :(

The thing that really pi$$ed me off, was some woman on her phone behind me "squished cyclist, yeah another cyclist has thrown themselves under a truck" I had to walk away before I lost it! I rarely get angry, and let most things wash over me, but that...ARGGGG!

CJCP, sorry oyu had to hear such an incident. Must have been horrible for you.

Hope the cyclist is ok. It must have happened after I passed that spot.

The motorbike accident that caused the closure of the Embankment looked horrid, I suspect it must have been a fatality from the wreckage of the bike and the amount of police activity at the scene keeping the road closed during rush hour.

It sobers you up to see such a sight

Yeah horrible scenes this morning. I hope they are all ok.

Southwark Bridge/Upper Thames street seems to be popular with HGV's so always a dangerous junction.

It does indeed. The motorcyle was in two parts, about 30 feet apart from each other. [/quote]

I was actually in work early this morning so missed it, but normally I would have been passing there shortly after that.

A word to everyone- ride defensively- remember everyone else on the road, (whether HGV, Bus, Taxi, van, car, motor cyclist, cyclist or pedestrian) is a dangerous idiot. Expect them to do something dangerous

    Keep safe

  • I really hope these people are OK. So this has got me thinking.

Can London not charge extra to HGV's to use the particular routes within the capital that see the most fatalities. Hopefully reducing the risk to the cyclist that us them, this would also mean that more cyclist could possibly appear in the London along these routes.

Not sure if this would work as I do not live or work in London (yet).

This would likely encourage those HGVs to use other routes running parallel to the charged for routes, thus causing more streets to suffer the effects of HGVs and cause more streets to be no go areas for many cyclists who are afraid of the HGVs

I should say that I am not suggesting this incident was caused by an HGV and to talk about penalising HGVs is a bit premature

Terrible morning. Hoping, against hope, the people involved in the incidents make good recoveries.

It is very sobering to see the aftermaths of these type of incidents. I was never very gung-ho through traffic but I'm even more cautious these days. Keep safe, everyone.

You know watching the tits this morning shuffling up the inside of a bendy bus and a juggernaut on Borough High St\ Tooley St junction I can see how why this is happening to frequently.

I think this just serves to show how vulnerable we are.

Unfortunately the responsibility lies with us to look after ourselves, and it doesnt matter how alert you are, how defensive you are, most other road users have no appreciation of how bikes fit in with other traffic, so will mis-judge our speed, cut us up, squeeze past, turn left across us etc.

And thats just the people who actually notice us.

Its easy to be ignorant when you are sitting in your steel box, cushioned from everything outside.

Personally I think part of the process for getting a driving licence should involve spending a day on a bicycle in a busy town - I know cycling has improved my driving, I know what to expect when I encounter a bike on the road, and generally treat cyclists how I like cars to treat me when Im in the saddle.

Drivers who are subsequently caught putting cyclists in danger shouldnt be fined etc - send them back on a refresher day on a bike in an attempt to educate them

I'm sorry to see that http://www.thelondonpaper.com/ is just covering the motorbike....no mention of the cyclist anywhere

Except: "“Unfortunately that is a by-product of a road traffic collision.”

Seems that motorbikes get priority over bicycles :(

For some reason there certainly seemed to be quite a few noob cyclists on the road this morning. I suppose we had a nice weekend and people have decided to dust off their bikes...

  • God it's horrible. I hope they are OK. I was at the Oval just after the cyclist got killed there and it still sends a chill down my spine whenever I pass that spot.

I was following a friend the other day and we were in traffic and he just cycled really fast up the inside of a coach. I said to him:

"Don't do that, it's really dangerous"
he replied "Eh? He saw me and I saw him, it's fine"

One minute later. Repeats same manoeuvre up inside of bendy bus.

Has anyone got a link I can send this fool?

Hmmmm.... I get the impression that many incidents like this one are due, not to "tits" filtering up the inside of traffic queues, but due to truck drivers on piecework turning left without being arsed to look at what's just ahead of them or on their inside, or in such a hurry they think they can overtake a cyclist before making their turn.

Or they just don't give a sh!t as long as they deliver their load, collect the mazooma and get on to the next job.

I've had a few close calls with large vehicles - not because I filter up the inside - but because they overtake too quickly and turn without looking.

Pull one of these guys up about their driving and they tell you to f*ck off.

But now the mythology that cyclists are at fault has taken root - and drivers are taking full advantage of this, while the police and the CPS do nothing to challenge it.

We're on our own out there people - be careful. :(

I don't think a thread about a specific incident is the place to jump to conclusions on either side.

    Quite.

The meejer and TfL are going to great pains to tell cyclists (usually women cyclists) not to ride up the inside of Big Things while, in my experience, it's true there are some cyclists who do very silly things around large vehicles, a lot of the reports I've read in the papers seem to point to an awful lot of lethal left hooks happening out there, encouraged by timid and gutter-hugging cyclists. I see a lot of foolish riding around London, and a lot of foolish driving.

There are several conclusions it's possble to jump to in this case. Let's not prejudge.

First post (hello there) on the ol forum as I gone past the motorbike on way in and wanted to know more and lo and behold this site did...
Twas nasty indeed - but good of police to actually let the cyclists all through the closed off sections. Bar parliament square which had 1000x the number of bad drivers who kept cross laning was odd to cycle along a carless embankment. My brother passed the cement truck later and didn't see anything - not sure if that is good or bad news.

Not good either way I guess.

I came in by tube today and this is the first I've heard of the incident. It's a tricky junction, one of the most risky places on my commuting route.

Of course there's nothing in the public domain to suggest how the incident occured - but I've seen both sides at fault there in the past. My thoughts are with the cyclist involved.
