The term was and had always been a pejorative term to black people. All those slaves, before they were slaves, had names, real ones. They also had the names of their tribes and of their race in their own language.

To strip them of that and to call them niggers was pejorative to them. Trust me.

Fair enough, I will take your word for it - anyway this is basically the sort of discussion a white bloke should avoid like the plague!

    Why?

Just because you're white doesn't mean you can't talk about other cultures. Its just PC gone mad!!!:lol::lol:

I don't mind talking about other cultures in general. I just aggitated when others start labelling or attaching stereotypes onto others.

not really. But both sound incredibly dated. And coloured just sounds weird - i mean we're all coloured.

btw South Africa used "coloured" as a classification for mixed race - so there is good reason if people don;t like that word any more.

I think it started off as abuse and became less so to some people, but i dought it ever lost it's meaning if directed at you. but words are funny old things, the word gay has changed meaning twice now.

Interestingly enough in a graphic design course (my then housemates told me) the lecturer argued that black and white weren't actually colours just starting/ending points.

I was in Glasgow station once and this bloke sidles up to me and says "what country are are you from?" and I said 'this country'. He said "no you aren't" (no attempt being made to write this in local dialect btw), then realising my faux pas i said, "no, you're right, I'm from England" and he said "no you're not, where are you really from?" and I said, "England". He said, but the way you look, you don;t look English, so you can't be, where are you from really?" (I paraphrase). I sensed tension at this point. The bloke was getting narked. I said I was from England and walked off quickly and he jabbered some racist crap behind me.

the strange thing is I am English, and can trace my whole family back to south devon in the late 1790s, with bits from scotland and the south east of england. If anything I may look a little Spanish but that's not very unusual...and if there is Spanish in my family it's two or more centuries back - a long way.

anway this brought the whole racist thing home to me. None of us are really safe. Racists are just fu.cktards until they get into power. And then they're dangerous fu.cktards.

What you talking about the BNP have excellent transport policies.

Hell, if I vote for them they'll even pay to fly me back to Jamaica where I could live off my Grandad's land, forever....

Well black certainly isn't a colour. A black object absorbs all the colors of the visible spectrum and reflects none of them to the eyes - although in practice many things that appear to be back do reflect some light.

God knows what they'd do with me. Part English, part German (I think, tiny bit), part Scotch, part Burmese (tiny bit but it shows)... Perhaps they'd fund a round-the-world tour?

I wonder if the new Nigerian gas company 'Nigaz' with be allowed to keep its name. Its a joint venture between Nigerian Pertrolium Corp and the Russian Gazprom.

I'm pretty sure it's Nye-gaz, like Niger. No problem there.

The ill named Nigerian Gas / Gazprom collab did raise a few eyebrows.

Could have been worse if the NT (national theatre) Cambridge Union joint season had got the co ahead.

Sadly the Cambridge contingent spent the summer selling secrets to the Russians and having crushes on each other to really get engaged.

I think thats evidence of a racist policy.

I mean, would they fly me (an immigrant) and my Irish wife (and our kids) back to Brisbane, just because I'm an immigrant?

Mind you, I'm overdue for a bit of Noosa beach therapy....maybe if I could convince them I should be deported, get the cash, take a holiday, then come back anyway seeing as I have a British passport too and they couldn't stop me?

Hmm, appealing as the idea sounds I still don't think I'll vote for the British Nutter Party!

I agree that the word definitely evolved into pejorative and highly offensive racist term but it was not always used in that way.

What did the word evolve from?

    In fact I'll tell you!

The word Negro means black in Portugese, Spainish and Italian. It is Niger in Latin.

As these were some of the earliest slave traders and main contributors to spoken language this word was wide spread and co-opted into English to describe a black person. Eventually as slang took hold the word eventually became nigger.

The term nigger was used to refer to black people at a time when they were slaves and were mistreated as they had no human rights. It was used at a time when they were whipped, raped, beaten and hung without the protection of any law of any kind. The word has always been pejorative to those of African origin.

I disagree. The fact that black people were persecuted at the time does not make the word used to describe them at the time necessarily pejorative. It just meant black.
