Whilst I wasn't impressed with that DQ decision or the complaint in the first place, I get the feeling Cavendish has been out-ridden by a more experienced pro and former GJ winner.

I agree. Cav's king of sprinting for now and maybe one year that alone will win him the green but Thor's a more complete rider (still a sprinter, obviously, but compared to Cav he's more complete) and doesn't have to rely on pure sprinting alone.

Hushovd is definitely earning the jersey today. He can't quite match Columbia on the flat stages but there are points on the hilly stages too, and he has climbed better than Cavendish and taken some of them.. His protest was in bad form, but his riding has been better than Cavendish's overall.

TBH, Cav went in with the plan of winning stages, and making it over the alps to try and win the stage in Paris. It was only having had the green jersey on that made us all look at that possibility. In reality, harsh DQ notwithstanding, Cav's all or nothing approach (win stages, forget the intermediates) always left him exposed to someone with slightly better all round skills, unless Columbia worked to chase every break on flat stages.

I have no problem with Cav not in green - 4, probably 5 stage wins is awesome.

I think it should be reiterated that his protest had no impact on the outcome - the decision had already been made. You may think less of him for making the protest, but should probably think less of Martin Bruin for DQing Cavendish rather than just swapping their places (as Robbie McEwen said on the ITV4 podcast).

Ha. Just received this email from ZipVit:

    Dear Phil

Have a FREE box of 20 energy bars on us to celebrate Thor Hushovds' win in the Tour de France worth £15.99 with every order over £50

Do you know that the Cervelo Test Team is ranked Number 1 In The World?

Do you also know that they are the only Team in the Peloton that uses ZipVit Sports Nutrition?

We know you will enjoy the products; this is a quote from Carlos Sastre:

Not quite sure what they mean by "Thor Hushovds' win" - have they already decided he's won the green?

What exactly did Thor protest about.

What did Hincipie (sp?) do during a stage that provoked critisim.

My only complaint is that no one has really pushed Astana or personally battled Contador.

WTH does CTT being the only team to use ZipVit have to do with the price of apples?

"Did you know that CTT, who use ZipVit, don't have anyone on the GC podium (yet)?"

6 points for Thor, so far.

Might not be a popular opinion but I think he deserves the Green Jersey.

Cav will have to take comfort in 5 stage wins.

His protest was in bad form

Yes, but as a married? man with children (who therefore doesn't have sex anymore) you should be using the chocolate energy bars apparently. (Note to self: must try one too).

Correct me if I remember this wrong, but didn't Cavendish win the only two intermediate sprints in the Tour that the peleton arrived at together? All the others were taken by riders in breaks. I'd hardly call that "forgetting".

True - but by that time Cav was relishing the green. IIRC before the tour Columbia/cav hadn't planned to contest those sprints.....

.......but of course, this is all from information gleaned from the highly reliable source of t'interweb....it's not like I've got a hotline to Bob Stapleton

btw I'm a cav fan, and this was an observation not a criticism.

and having said all that - chapeau to Thor for what he is doing today so far.....

I think Hushovd's making a statement today, in direct response to Cav's statement that the green jersey has a stain on it. Old pro puts talented youngster firmly in his place. Faster sprinter, but not a better racer.

And I reckon that to a degree Hushovd has been allowed to do that by the breakaway, and possibly the field too. The second intermediate sprint has gone and Hushovd's been gobbled up; prior to that they were prepared to let him ride solo.

Sounds like Cav may be making fewer friends than enemies in the peloton. Silly boy.

I can't believe it - I've been watching all day and now have to go and have a massage and will miss the rest of the day's racing.

Aaaggghh, didn't even think about TdF when I made the appointment 6 weeks ago.
