Non-helmet wearers seem to be significantly more evangelical about it. I suspect because helmet wearing has become such the norm whilst cycling that non helmet wearers are in a minority in the UK.
Plus they are probably fed up with always being told "you should wear a helmet" by uninformed do-gooding non-cyclists.

Personally, I wear a helmet, that's my choice and I see no reason to argue with those who have made their own choice not to.

I do take issue with the "helmets look stupid" position some adopt, as in the context of matching lycra outfits, cotton(!) caps, gilets, roadie shoes - it's a drop in the fuck1ng ocean.

indeed to both, one is mad/dumb/stupid don't need a brain if one don't use a helmet?

and yes once on a bike very few people look cool most look um well not cool shall we say.

  • Oh No! this thread is having an effect on me. Just caught myself browsing eBay for helmets.

Does anyone crash-test these things, is there a standard/kitemark/rating system like for motorcycle helmets?

No, no, they are just put on the market with outlandish claims as to their performance, just like skin cream.

Hmmmmm, BSEN1078 is the standard (for both skin cream and helmets) :)http://www.bsi-global.com/en/Standards-and-Publications/Industry-Sectors/Health-and-Safety/H--S-Products/BS-EN-10781997

And why no option for the Nicolas Cage crash-protection and dispute-resolution system? http://yourargumentisinvalid.com/wp-con ... a_bird.jpg

I wear a Giro E2 in summer and a remedy in the winter. You may sneer att the heavy protection, but when I headbut a car or concrete fullface rulz!!
I also commute on a 6" bike with DH brakes. I can out brake and manauver anything on the road.
Why would I care about 150g of bike weight, I just ate 400g of cookies while reading this?

Wear a relatively cheap (but BS compliant) helmet, will get something more 'airy' whan I can justify the cost, a number4 cut helps keep the head cool and is fast drying...

nor probably out brake to be honest, at least in the dry. disks are great loads of power, but very few commuters will be going fast enought to really make the difference at close on 50mph down hill, yup fantastic. for commuting across town not likely to be able to use any of that power.

If you can out break everything how come you headbut cars?

Personally I'm very wary riding my trail bike on the road - I can lock my wheels up with the mearest squirt on the brakes. THis is impressive but doesnt actually stop you fast... Given fat nobblies grip tarmac less well than slicks I'd defnitely prefer to emergency stop on road on my roadbike.

It has a little peak at the front - Is that any use keeping the sun out of your eyes, or deflecting rain from your face - the way a baseball cap does?

Like R_T_A, I also wear a Buff band under my helmet. I found that when I got hot the front bit of the padding would irritate my head. Plus, it's a lot easier to wash the Buff than the helmet sponges!
