  • Cloth cap - so my whippet knows which bike to follow.

seriously - a baseball cap to keep the sun out my eyes - tried shades but moving from light to shadow can mean you miss things.

Usually nothing, but I'm thinking with this heat possibly a bandana might be a good idea... 8)

do you think its a good enough excuse to get a new helmet cos mine is a bit smelly???

Since I microwaved my helmet the smell has got less and less - I also make an effort whenever possible to leave it in the sun or, at least, a breeze. It's wearable again and it was REALLY rank before.

Umm, I fear (though I stand to be corrected) that leaving the lid in the sun damages the polystyrene by hardening it up - those removing the little protection that it offers.

When I had my tumble in March and sat on the A&E trolley with my shoulder in pieces the doc asked if I was wearing my helmet. I said yes. He said good. I said "but I didn't hit my head and it doesn't appear to have done my shoulder any good" :)

I wear a helmet - in the winter I added a buff and may do the same (when back on the bike) to counteract my body's ability to produce about 8 pints of perspiration frommy head every hour! I have seen some peak baseball type caps with reinforced innards used by some professions and have wondered if they would be a good alternative?

    I wear a lid.
Seems ok in the summer, don't feel the need for a sweat band or cap.
In winter I wear a buff under the lid to keep my bonce warm.

i can't stand my hot sweaty hair ,and one day i forgot to wear my lid, and loved the breeze through my locks and not having helmet hair at work... so i often go without when weather is hot

A well vented helmet with a wicking scull cap under - soaks up all the sweat, and stops it dripping down my face - that is until I remove the lot at work/home... :?

Um.. when you say you microwaved your helmet, do you mean you microwaved the pads, or the whole thing?

The whole thing - the straps and polystyrene on the inside were the culprits of pong - the pads I could wash separately. There's no metal on it so it was fine. Unless microwaves do the same damage as the sun! I need a new helmet anyway so I'm not going to be relying on this one (which is already 5 years old) for much longer.

I don't know enough about polystyrene, or the frequency range/intensity of a domestic MW oven to know the answer. If it came out warm, it might not be great. Mind you, I think you'd have to try quite hard... thinking aloud, ignore me...oh you were.

    Helmet and cap.

The cap is not to look cool (my wife assures me that I am in no way cool), but keep to the huge amounts of sweat off my glasses and out of my eyes.

I normally wear a helmet, more out of habit than anything.

However if I'm going out and taking the bike then my inner tart makes me ditch the helmet in favour of the windswept look. Mind you it does depend upon who I'm going to meet

I cant get my gloves between my lid and the top of my glasses without major smearage.

I have to take my glasses off to wipe and I can't be doing with that all the time.

Usually, I wear a helmet. That's a development from the past year or so; until then I wore nothing, or a fleece hat in winter.

Yesterday and this morning, however, I wore no headgear.

Looking at the stats so far it seems about a fair proportion of commuters use Helmets.

It makes me chuckle that the non Helmet wearers can be so vocal about the merits or lack of, of helmets.

    Why?

I'm not wearing anything on my bonce for today's commute, will normally wear a cap for long rides though, in line with the sweat reasons mentioned by CJ. It was pouring off the peak on the last climb of the Dragon Ride!

In the Helmet / no Helmet debate always seems to be fairly even amounts of posts on both sides. **

Just interested that there appear to be significantly more helmet wearers according the the oh-so-scientific survey which implies the ratio of posts per helmet wearer is less than per non helmet wearer when arguing which is better.

** not actually based on any analysis or facts, just a quick impression.

Non-helmet wearers seem to be significantly more evangelical about it. I suspect because helmet wearing has become such the norm whilst cycling that non helmet wearers are in a minority in the UK.
Plus they are probably fed up with always being told "you should wear a helmet" by uninformed do-gooding non-cyclists.

Personally, I wear a helmet, that's my choice and I see no reason to argue with those who have made their own choice not to.

I do take issue with the "helmets look stupid" position some adopt, as in the context of matching lycra outfits, cotton(!) caps, gilets, roadie shoes - it's a drop in the fuck1ng ocean.

    Definately a decent lid.

Someon could be the best ider in the world, all it takes is a car driver not paying attention, and as you all know.

Lid, deffinately the way forward. It does amaze me how many people cycle without one. Madness!
